...and especially gifts with these quotes written on them?

Before anyone jumps down my throat

  • I am grateful for the thought behind the gift, as it is well intentioned
  • I also realise it is just an opinion (not an AIBU) and probably akin to hating puppies and other cute animals.

However, it just sets my teeth on edge and makes me want to metaphorically poke someone in the eye (which I never do, metaphorically or literally).

I just want to know that I am not alone in my irrational loathing of something that is fundamentally nice and probably helpful to others.

The ones on handbags and any type of clothing are the worst I really judge people who wear them

RNBrie · 27/12/2018 20:24

The worst ones I've seen are the ones turned into wall stickers and taking up half a kitchen wall. Can't stand it!

TinyBarista · 27/12/2018 20:25

YES - twee and shite. YANBU.

brizzledrizzle · 27/12/2018 20:29

I prefer them to the shit ones like 'always be yourself unless you can be a unicorn, then be a unicorn'

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 27/12/2018 20:29

Personally I hate both inspirational quotes and large wooden letters with the word Love or Family or Blessed that you put on your shelf. My boss has a number of i inspirational quotes he uses for team meetings which make me want to commit murder

parrotonmyshoulder · 27/12/2018 20:31

I detest them with a venom beyond all imaginings.
However, my 9 year old daughter is lapping then up, and anything that motivates or inspires her has got to have something...

toucan12 · 27/12/2018 20:31

YANBU - 'live laugh love' being the worst.

ChristmasRaven · 27/12/2018 20:32

My friend and I call them "hope for the hopeless". In that they are written/said to try and make someone feel better about something when the reality is whatever they are going through is just shit and some pathetic "inspirational" quote isn't going to change that. I actively detest them.

My biggest horror would be having a home with "live, laugh, love" all over the place! That one really pisses me off!

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 27/12/2018 20:33

I like them. Not the ' live love laugh' shite but inspirational quotes from novels etc.

cooblanket · 27/12/2018 20:34

YANBU. Check out unspirational quotes instead, I love theseGrin

Hoopaloop · 27/12/2018 20:39

As someone else once said, I'd feel less uneasy walking into someone's living room with a swastika on the wall than see 'live, love, laugh' in wanky letters.

brizzledrizzle · 27/12/2018 20:43

I have live, laugh, love on the wall.

YouWereRight · 27/12/2018 20:45

Not my thing. I include the sweaters and t-shirts with odd words on, like Bonjour, Love, Living My Best Life.

Err, no thanks.

Tony2 · 27/12/2018 20:46

One life, live it. Oh bugger off.

liglitter cute dc you have there Grin

brizzledrizzle · 27/12/2018 20:57

You mean like this?

That is vomit inducing. I have 'live simply, laugh often, love deeply' - it sums up my philosophy to life.

codenameduchess · 27/12/2018 20:57

I detest them! They drive me nuts... twee, meaningless wank.

The one about learning to dance in the rain 🤮🤮 If I was genuinely struggling or in a crap situation these 'quotes' would send me into a full on rage.

Oh and the worst, the absolute worst are the ones where it's a load of crap then 'we do geek/Disney/unending bullshit' (a la pic).

Honestly can't gather enough energy to care one way or another. I don't understand how any one does care!

Zwischenwasser · 27/12/2018 21:01

glitter. WHERE did u get that from? It is perfect.

Mind you, we stayed with friends in Austria this year, their apartment Was covered in twee wooden quotes. But in German. Idk why, but it looked somehow more acceptable. I was tempted to see if I could buy one to bring back. Same holiday, Airbnb in Belgium. Quotes in the wall in some in Dutch and some in French. It kind of looked worse in French ?!

Guess it’s because in England id see fake french quotes as a sign of pretentiousness Maybe? But the German and Flemish/Dutch languages aren’t beloved of the English middleclass wannabees in quite the same way.

Perhaps I should get some in Russian?

couchparsnip · 27/12/2018 21:01

They are so predictable that someone has written an AI program to generate random quotes accompanied by inspiring pictures. They sound profound but are actually complete nonsense.
