...and especially gifts with these quotes written on them?

Before anyone jumps down my throat

  • I am grateful for the thought behind the gift, as it is well intentioned
  • I also realise it is just an opinion (not an AIBU) and probably akin to hating puppies and other cute animals.

However, it just sets my teeth on edge and makes me want to metaphorically poke someone in the eye (which I never do, metaphorically or literally).

I just want to know that I am not alone in my irrational loathing of something that is fundamentally nice and probably helpful to others.

Wait, so you don't want to dance like no ine is watching? Whyever not??!

treaclesoda · 28/12/2018 06:18

I'm a grumpy sort but do you know what else I dislike? Those personalised family name things where everyone's names are spelled out crossword style with scrabble tiles.

BitOutOfPractice · 28/12/2018 06:19

Ha! I wrote a blog piece about this recently. I loathe them. I unfollow people on SM that post them. Ugh!

BellaMaroni · 28/12/2018 07:40

I particularly dislike the ones that essentially
say just be positive and your problems will be fixed! I can only assume that the people who write them have never had mental ill-health?

My pet hate, can't stand them.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 28/12/2018 07:46

I hate them with a passion

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 28/12/2018 07:46

And trust me Ghandi and Einstein didn’t come out with a lot of the crap they get blamed for

CarrieBlu · 28/12/2018 08:03

My MIL buys me crap gifts adorned with moronic inspirational quotes every Christmas. Think she does it just to piss me off, I am very obviously not the type of person who likes them!

TheOxymoron · 28/12/2018 08:06

The funniest house sign is BATH. Why do you need a sign next to the great big tub with taps to know what it is! Grin

Sorry, not an inspirational quote but had to get that one in.

Cheekylittlenumber · 28/12/2018 08:13

Ah I hate them. I have a neighbour who constantly puts them up on SM. She’s also very vocal about all the volunteering she does in the community, and preaches about kindness and pretends to be the perfect citizen. Meanwhile the other summer she had a very public affair with her friends husband, and does nothing but talk about her friends behind their backs. I think those quotes are just a cover up for faulty personalities.

Bluesheep8 · 28/12/2018 08:19

The only one I quite like is "What if the hokey cokey really IS what it's all about?" But I'm with the rest of you on most of the others.

nuttyknitter · 28/12/2018 08:21

I don't particularly dislike them, and I don't actually have any, but I do dislike the stealth boast 'what great taste I have and how naff are other people' tone of this thread.

TurkeySandwichAnyone · 28/12/2018 08:27

Inspirational quotes are one thing written down however if spoken out loud in public it's another level I'm afraid..

TurkeySandwichAnyone · 28/12/2018 08:30

Not a taste issue either but usually an accuracy issue for me. Get a properly attributed saying and I'll judge it on its merits. But far too many are lifted willy nilly from the internet and do not stand up to a basic investigation.

masterandmargarita · 28/12/2018 08:32

I think they're naff but I think they've probably helped alot of people around the world overcome mental issues as well as hugely successful people like oprah and Michelle Obama. So they can't be all bad

Santasshoe · 28/12/2018 08:33

I have a live laugh love photo frame that was given to me. Personally I can't stand insperational quotes on social media but also the "I'm a crap person deal with it" type quotes alot of people share. Will try and find one.

Singlenotsingle · 28/12/2018 08:34

I'm glad there are other grumpy old grinches in the world apart from myself. I always get hissy when I see "live laugh love" and other shite on people's walls (who are you to tell me what to do?) and then I think what a sourpuss I am!

Not a stealth boast at all - I don't like them at all and I do think they are naff. Not being stealthy about it and how is it a boast? It's an opinion about something that is seen everywhere - shops, social media, the London Underground.

I also hate peas - if I start a thread about that will that also be a stealth boast?!

Single, I have being told what to do. Maybe that's my problem with quotes in what I perceive to be a "bossy" tone!

TurkeySandwichAnyone · 28/12/2018 08:41

I hate not I have!

RelativePitch · 28/12/2018 08:52

My friends who are into MLMs are the worst offenders for posting this stuff all over SM.

noworklifebalance · 28/12/2018 08:53

MLM??

I'm also not a fan. The keep calm and carry on craze really annoyed me but mainly because it diluted an attitude that Britain had during WW2. It was a saying of resilience, defiance and determination to not be cowed by the war but to keep the country going.

Now I see those words and roll my eyes instead of remembering those who really did keep calm and carry on when they had every reason to panic and give up.
