To think Seedlip alcohol free is massively overrated and overpriced?

DH celebrated a year alcohol free on Boxing Day and plans to stay that way. I had read on forums that Seedlip alcohol free gin was a top sophisticated af drink and treat and bought him a bottle. Not cheap at £27.99
Possibly I should have chosen the citrus which would have been my choice for me but I thought he would prefer the spice. It has way too much cloves in and tastes like dental mouthwash. It's vile.
And that price ? Remember a substantial part of the price of a bottle of actual gin involves a substantial % of tax which presumably doesn't apply to af drinks.
He's currently off chancing his arm demanding a refund from Waitrose on grounds of it being disgusting rip off. Grin

Hmm. What did he pair it with?

The spice goes better with a ginger ale/tonic.

I quite enjoy seedlip, but like any “spirit” it’s a matter of personal preference.

dementedpixie · 27/12/2018 12:58

Saw that in Tesco and thought it was a rip off price too

FlibbertyGiblets · 27/12/2018 12:58

Omg dental mouthwash is one of my favourite tastes Blush.

Top tip, thumbs up

SaucyJack · 27/12/2018 12:59

I can’t imagine a world where £27.99 wouldn’t be a rip off for what is essentially squash.

Olddognewtricks2019 · 27/12/2018 13:05

I simply don’t get Seedlip. I tried it once during dry January and moved straight on to Big Tom. I have no idea why a soft drink costs so much.

LEMtheoriginal · 27/12/2018 13:08

M&S alcohol free G&T is nice and only £2.50 a bottle. However it isnt a mixer

PicaK · 27/12/2018 13:12

Sorry but it's the best non alcholic drink on the market. Only one that tastes grown up. I must admit I prefer the other two to the clovey tasting one though.

Iused2BanOptimist · 27/12/2018 13:12

Paired with Fever Tree. Personally I like a dash of Angostura bitters but it's nice with a good squeeze of lime.
Essentially it is flavoured water but at £££!

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 27/12/2018 13:12

It's a rip off. Doesn't taste anything like gin (or any other spirit for that matter). I stick to lime and soda water for alcohol free drinks.

AwkwardSquad · 27/12/2018 13:45

I tried it in a bar once because I’d heard so much about it and was thinking about getting a bottle. I’m glad I tried it first, because I thought it was meh. I’m happier with all the interest tonic waters that are available now.

AwkwardSquad · 27/12/2018 13:45

*interesting

Elphame · 27/12/2018 13:49

I had a bottle of the Cedar alcohol free gin. At the same price as a bottle of real gin I also considered it a rip off.

Didn't taste of much either. The search for an adult soft drink continues

user1457178042 · 27/12/2018 13:50

Had one yesterday, with Fever Tree and peas floating in it.

My son said "Is that just pea water?"

I said "Not exactly..." then had a mouthful and said "Ask me that again"

"Is it pea water?"

"Yes".

shins · 27/12/2018 13:50

Absolute ripoff. I go for long periods without alcohol and you're better off with lemony tonic and a dash of bitters. Or Fentimans ginger beer with some bashed mint and a squeeze of lime. Or that M&S non-alcoholic ale.

easyandy101 · 27/12/2018 13:52

It's just 30 quid squash, I can't believe people really pay that Grin

Bungalowbeth · 27/12/2018 13:56

I’ve had both flavours, I really like the one you bought but agree it’s a bit bloody pricey for what it is.

CottonSock · 27/12/2018 13:57

Totally agree. Will stick with diet coke

dellacucina · 27/12/2018 13:57

YANBU. Given it's meant to be a mixer, I thought that it would have a more intense flavour on its own.

It's a shame that no nonalcoholic drinks actually taste like alcohol.

sparkly72 · 27/12/2018 13:58

I'm newly AF and I've tried loads of different drinks... this one was one of the first. I swear it reminds me of the emperors new clothes.
It is literally water flavoured with a waft of clove or orange... terrible rip off

disneyspendingmoney · 27/12/2018 13:59

Buy done juniper berries and soak them, then use the water with a tonic.

All gin is, is a flavoured vodka. Just a grain spirit with flavourings. Alcohol is quite a strong solvent, but so is water, just takes a bit longer to leach out the flavonoids.

You could speed up the process in a pressure cooker.

Seedlip is taking the piss

highlandteajenny · 27/12/2018 14:00

I quite liked seedlip garden when I had it in a restaurant, not sure I'd pay £28 for a full bottle at home though. For Christmas this year I found a bottle of cucumber syrup in Asda next to all the other fancy squashes and mixed with ice and fever tree tonic it reminded me of a Hendricks G&T and was only a couple of quid!

sambasam · 27/12/2018 14:02

Yep it’s gross - bought my DH a bottle last year as a treat (he is also off booze) and we were both gutted by how crap it was

ThistleAmore · 27/12/2018 14:04

Seedlip is a brilliant example of the aphorism 'a fool and their money are soon parted'.

I wish I had come up with this. Perhaps I am overly generous in my perception of human nature and find it too difficult to believe that people will willingly pay the better part of £30 for squash.

Jellybabie3 · 27/12/2018 14:06

Its revolting. My DH broivht me some last year when I was pregnant and I have had one drink which I had to force myself to swallow. It is such an incredible rip off.

Tried every non alcoholic drink out there and the only one any good is tesco ready made g&t in cans.

disneyspendingmoney · 27/12/2018 14:06

Alcohol in its raw form is absolutely flavourless, surgical spirit, rubbing alcohol and perfume all have flavours down to their additives, not that you'd want to drink them, but you can and can get shit faced off them
