Sleep in a bed for heavens sake

Just finished Christmas lunch, went to the loo and Mac me back into the living room to find MIL has made herself a nice bed on the sofa and gone to sleep. Her actual bed is about 10 steps away. AIBU to put Led Zeppelin on the hifi rather than tiptoeing round? I can almost forgive falling asleep on the sofa accidentally, although it irritates me and I would never do it, but deliberately settling down for a nap is just entitled. There are six other people in the house who can’t now socialise normally in the living room.

How is calling a Hi-Fi a 'Hi- Fi' wanky or pretentious?
Do people not know what they are?

Aridane · 25/12/2018 18:35

What is a hiding?

Aridane · 25/12/2018 18:36

Sorry, hifi, not hiding

Allthewaves · 25/12/2018 18:40

Nap is fine but it's either sitting upright on sofa or lying on floor so everyone has space.

Somtamthai · 25/12/2018 18:40

@aridane
I was going to ask the same lol. I thought it was an iPhone speaker.

But it’s a CD player with the big speakers (I think)

Bittermints · 25/12/2018 18:41

This is a room with a hi fi system.

ErrolTheDragon · 25/12/2018 18:42

YANBU - DH used to do this when we used to have Xmas at his parents house and very irritating it was too. But I'm inclined to absolve your MIL because she has unwittingly lead me to a Flanders and Swann song I'd not heard before.

Hi-fi is entirely correct for people of the generation who have hi-fi and its usage should be maintained because otherwise 'wi-fi' is inexplicable.

TipseyTorvey · 25/12/2018 18:47

Been pondering this as have chortled through the thread. We have a sound system as in multiple components linked to huge speakers ( dh will not heed my pleas to downsize) via gold cables from 1990 wotnot, but also it now links to Spotify and streams music via alexa. Also have various DAB radios from when everyone thought that would be the thing. So no YABU to call it a hi fi but your MIL is for not taking her snoring self off away so you can enjoy your evening. Accidentally tip some of your prosecco over her to wake her up?

jessstan2 · 25/12/2018 18:51

I've just woken up from same. Didn't know it was wrong.

When you say she is entitled, what do you mean? Entitled to what? Entitled to a sleep if she wants one?

I presume you have other places to sit than that sofa, otherwise she wouldn't have chosen it.

It's nice to have a sleep.

Mum2jenny · 25/12/2018 18:54

Just blast out the the 1812 Tchaikovsky overture. That would wake most people!

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 25/12/2018 18:54

Bro has just used bro- fi technicality to have a nap but I luvvvs him do he can do what he wants

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/12/2018 18:57

Got any bagpipe music?.... just saying...

cooblanket · 25/12/2018 19:06

Some posts here remind me of this

This sounds like something my 6'3" ex brother in law did years ago. Went to sleep stretched on the sofa so we all had to sit on dining chairs in the living room. Why nobody woke him and told him to go to bed is beyond me.

why didn't you then?

Gigglebrain · 25/12/2018 19:24

I think the problem is (and that people aren’t realising this), is that she has fallen asleep stretched out using up a whole sofa. If she had fallen asleep on the sofa in a normal sitting position then you would BU, however, as she has deliberately fallen asleep using the whole sofa then YANBU.

sj257 · 25/12/2018 19:25

If I fell asleep on the sofa I wouldn’t be bothered about noise around me

OldGreyBoots · 25/12/2018 19:28

Whack on the Zep and have a good time - can I come? Xmas Grin

Viggooooh · 25/12/2018 19:29

I’m a daytime napper. Weirdly I need silence at night but dont mind napping around noise in the day. I wouldn’t expect anyone to be quiet if I fell asleep on the sofa in company.

Craft1905 · 25/12/2018 19:41

Mission speakers, AR EB101 turntable and Marantz amp.

What speaker cable are you using. QED 79 strand will really make a difference.

waxy1 · 25/12/2018 19:44

You’ve got a hi fi phono and boy do you let it blast!

chemenger · 25/12/2018 20:01

Craft, I’m not sure what the cables are I got them from my DB who recoiled in horror from my old ones. He also replaced my cartridge with one of his cast offs which has improved things too. His listening room is reminiscent of the picture in the PP. I pretend not to be impressed but his system is out of this world.

Well it should do. Marantz/Mission/ Acoustic Research are all quality products. Sounds like he will have fitted decent cable.

It's wasted on bloody Led Zep though. Try and find spare speaker cable to throttle MIL with.

katseyes7 · 25/12/2018 21:52

dotty1970 Because it was his parents house, and his wife was there. l was very much the 'outsider' and it would not have gone down well.

WhiteDust · 25/12/2018 22:43

THIS is a HI-FI for anyone who doesn't know what one is or thinks they don't exist anymore! 😄

Sleep in a bed for heavens sake
CoughLaughFart · 25/12/2018 23:03

Why on earth is hifi wanky?

If you’re referring to my earlier comment, I think I’ve been misinterpreted - I was saying it was wanky to criticise someone for using the word hi-fi. Although I am glad to have gifted ‘wanky’ to the thread Grin
