Sleep in a bed for heavens sake

chemenger · 25/12/2018 16:15

Just finished Christmas lunch, went to the loo and Mac me back into the living room to find MIL has made herself a nice bed on the sofa and gone to sleep. Her actual bed is about 10 steps away. AIBU to put Led Zeppelin on the hifi rather than tiptoeing round? I can almost forgive falling asleep on the sofa accidentally, although it irritates me and I would never do it, but deliberately settling down for a nap is just entitled. There are six other people in the house who can’t now socialise normally in the living room.

OP posts:
GlassLantern · 25/12/2018 17:20

Why is her bed nearby? Haven’t you given her your bed?

KittyMcKitty · 25/12/2018 17:23

Why on earth is hifi wanky? Sound system now that sounds truly wanky! Hifi or record player just sounds normal.

BikeRunSki · 25/12/2018 17:24

See, I wouldn’t say that “hi-fi” and “sound system” were the same thing.

A hi-fi is a carefully chosen set of seperates, usually linked up by gold and thick copper cables.
A sound system is the same functions but all in one.

Hi-fis are much wankier. Smile
In a good way.

MaidenMotherCrone · 25/12/2018 17:30

The Ops words not mine.....

What is the modern term for separate parts of a sound system combined to play music then?

The separate parts of X combined = X

Chapellass · 25/12/2018 17:34

PPs -,Sound system def wankier - are you club djs or rave promoters? No. It's a hi fi.

OP - wake her up and say can you move everyone wants to sit down.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 25/12/2018 17:35

I don’t have a hifi,or sound system. No cds. I just stream music
Have Sonos,Apple speakers and Spotify and Apple Music

Bumbledop · 25/12/2018 17:36

I have two adults asleep here. One has gone to bed, but one appears to have made a nest on the sofa. We will just carry on as normal around them. I will probably just sit on the floor Smile

All normal for us.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/12/2018 17:37

I’ve just woken up after a kip on the sofa (I’m using the excuse of a nasty chest infection). DP and DD are sat on the floor with a puzzle, DMIL is watching Monsters Inc with her third Baileys and our two other guests are on the other sofa just chilling. I could have gone to bed but I didn’t want to miss the company (disclaimer: I took up two thirds of the sofa and there are still two other empty spots in the room.

I still call our music system ‘the stereo’.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/12/2018 17:43

Normal people call it hi-fi

Very young people call it 'sound system'

Sound system is CLEARLY way wankier than hi-fi

The only place where it doesn't work (new things are normally wankier than old) is mirrors - haven't heard anyone call them ' the glass' or the 'looking glass' for years - so if I heard 'look in the glass' I would think that was wankier

5cats · 25/12/2018 17:46

Anniegetyourgun No, the kids from Fame one Grin

GreatWesternValkyrie · 25/12/2018 17:48

Play Whole Lotta Love chemenger, Plant’s moaning will wake her up and drive her far away!

5cats · 25/12/2018 17:55

I call it a gramophone myself

Bagadverts · 25/12/2018 18:06

OP Sit on her!

Angie yes first thing I thought of was Flanders and Swann. For anyone who doesn’t know it they did a song called

llangennith · 25/12/2018 18:07

As if it matters what you call the device from which music is played🙄 Lot of grumpy people who need a nap on this thread.
It's extremely rude and selfish of anyone to lie down on the sofa for a nap in the living room when there's a perfectly good bed on offer.

Wake her up and ask her to move as you need the seating. I'm at DD's and off upstairs for a nap shortly😄

Bittermints · 25/12/2018 18:08

We have hi fi. For once on MN, I think this really might be a generational thing. Tuner, amp, pre-amp, CD player and two speakers, each the size of a small child. My husband is very techy in spite of being old enough to have a bus pass Xmas Grin and has worked out how to connect it to Spotify as well. We used to have a cassette player but regretfully chucked it out when the last few tapes we had deteriorated to the point of being unplayable.

pintsizedblondie · 25/12/2018 18:09

I'd be annoyed, it's inconsiderate towards everyone else. My partner's step dad always goes for a sleep when he comes over to ours after we've had our evening meal and it really pisses me off.

UnderMajorDomoMinor · 25/12/2018 18:11

Sit down next to her and move her feet/budge her up. She can’t take up the whole space.

Frogletmamma · 25/12/2018 18:15

Just been asleep for 2 hours on the floor of the living room but to be fair have been up since 4am doing stuff. Life appears to have continued around me.

icannotremember · 25/12/2018 18:16

I'd like a hifi. I loved mine back in the day. Spotify etc is v convenient but I think I'm going to save up for a hifi anyway, I still have so many cds gathering dust on shelves!

Re the sleeping person, I'd just pretend she wasn't, and if she woke up and complained I'd encourage her to go to bed. Setting up to sleep during the day in the living room of a house full of people is both daft and a bit rude... not rude enough to say so, but rude enough not to be indulged.

SleepySofa · 25/12/2018 18:18

I love a nice sofa nap. It’s cosy to drift off to the sound of family around you, I certainly wouldn’t expect people to be quiet! Going to bed is completely different mentally. I wouldn’t get my head down deliberately outside of my own home though - but maybe when DS has his own place, I’d feel comfortable doing it there! My inlaws often fall asleep in our sitting room after a big meal and I think it’s quite sweet. What does your husband think about it?

CanadianJohn · 25/12/2018 18:19

I just called the combination radio-record player a radiogram. Beloved was horrified... what should I call it, then?

The cat usually bags the sofa - we make do with armchairs for napping.

ScabbyHorse · 25/12/2018 18:20

I use a 'hifi' and a chromecast (£30) to wirelessly play music from Spotify off my phone.

FYI!

Carry on around her. Hope you have a good one.

MissTook · 25/12/2018 18:23

Nudge her and ask if it's called hifi or sound system coz she's been nominated the arbiter by the internet. Smile

WhiteDust · 25/12/2018 18:29

I love the fact that you still have a hi-fi and are playing Genesis on it! I have stepped back to Christmas 1983 (with my Mum & Dad) in my head

BreconBeBuggered · 25/12/2018 18:32

Don't be quiet around your MIL Perch wherever you can and turn up the amplifier. My DC would definitely think it was wanky to refer to our 'sound system' - bits of it are from the mid-80s and the newest components, replacement speakers, are at least 12 years old.
