To eBay rare LOL doll - DH says I'm awful

Our 4 year old is into LOL dolls and has lots of them (all bought and paid for by me)

I gave her one the other day - it cost £10 but when she opened it we realised it's very rare and going for £50 on eBay

When we realised this, I said to DH I'd sell it, which he said was "awful" etc as our daughter would miss it, blah blah blah. After this conversation I put it away to see if she'd miss it (she didn't as she had 15 others and they all look similar!)

Anyway I didn't take this conversation very seriously as it seemed a bit ridiculous for him
To actually be annoyed with me, and since our daughter hadn't even noticed it had gone I popped it on eBay and now someone's offered £30 and there's 5 days to go

When I mentioned this just now in front of his family, he kicked off and got all cross, whereas they backed me up

I said he was overreacting, joked he could bid for it if he wanted it that much, said I'd paid for it and no one had even realised it had gone etc, but he'd properly annoyed!

I said I could by her give more with the proceeds and they all look the same anyway. He said she knew it was rare (she's only 4!?) and how could i...

AIBU? Sorry for long post, struggling to explain this concisely!! Seems like a bit of a storm in a tea cup

AgnesNaismith I can’t think of a reason you buy them. Seeing as you throw them out any chance you get. Must be fun to roll in the money, I guess.

Soubriquet · 26/12/2018 14:34

See I quite like the lol dolls

I have my own personal collection on the shelf

I won’t ebay rares as it will either go into my collection or dd will have it

I won’t pay stupid prices though

Diva1985 · 26/12/2018 14:42

My DD has a few Ultra Rare LOL's I wouldn't dream of selling them. They are hers.

BWatchWatcher · 26/12/2018 14:46

Oh god sell it while it’s worth something.
We went through this with moshi monsters. Ultra rare is only useful if someone is actually willing to buy it.

Crudd · 26/12/2018 18:05

Because they are utter plastic tat, luckily dc doesn’t want to buy them anymore.
A lot of kid's toys are plastic tat (or cloth tat, or wooden tat or whatever).

Throwing them out just seems spiteful, particularly when you could easily donate them if you simply can't bear to have them in your house for whatever bizzare or precious reason.

AgnesNaismith · 27/12/2018 08:32

for whatever bizarre or precious reason

Because they are shit

I wonder how the op would feel if her dh gave her a gift. Then took it back sold it because he would get more money for it.

Yura · 27/12/2018 14:15

@Notacluethisxmas i would be delighted if a shop- bought surprise bundle would contain something unexpectedly valuable that the receiver of the gift could sell!

QuackPorridgeBacon · 28/12/2018 21:34

Yura Read the comment you are replying to again. She said if the posters husband took it back to sell. That would be rude. If the receiver chose to sell it themselves then that’s ok.

Yura · 29/12/2018 06:17

@QuackPorridgeBacon the daughter doesn’t miss it, so under the same assumption the OP wouldn’t particularly care for the gift (lets say an surprisingly rare toiletries set out of many, or a rare candle out of many) and get the money, so no issue?

Notacluethisxmas · 29/12/2018 09:20

@Yura but that wasn't the point I made.

You don't give someone a gift, they tale it away because you think it's worth more and in your opinion they won't miss it.

No adult would be ok with their partner doing it to them. The receiver choosing to sell it is a totally different thing.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 29/12/2018 14:25

Yura I think you’re missing the point deliberately. If you buy something for someone and then find out it’s worth something, hide it until they forget about it and then sell it to make a profit, that is wrong. Kids don’t forget either, I have something away of my daughters because she had it for a long time and I’d never seen her play with it. She asked for it much later and has mentioned it a few times. I haven’t replaced it because we both know she won’t bother with it, her sister got the same thing and she doesn’t play with it either, point is though, she remembered what I thought she wouldn’t. Either way, the point to LOL dolls is to collect them, why would you sell the hardest one to get just to pick out some more and end up with duplicates?

Gave* not have.
