To expect chopped swede?

I tend to cut my own veg normally and not buy pre prepared. HOWEVER, swede is such a bugger to cut. I can never see it pre chopped anywhere these days. Or it's mixed with carrot - which I do not want!!!

This is a real issue.

Put it in the microwave. Either heat it for a few minutes to soften a little of if you’re aiming for Swede mash keep it in for 20 mins and scoop it out :)

tillytrotter1 · 22/12/2018 20:36

Why is it hard to cut? It's no harder than a carrot!

gimmeadoughnut123 · 22/12/2018 20:37

We really live in a fantastic world with no serious problems if chopped swede is a real issue.

gimmethedietcoke · 22/12/2018 20:38

Lighten up doughnut

Do you have a food processor? Grate it and then steam it.

gimmethedietcoke · 22/12/2018 20:39

It's too big and hard ! Plus I am clumsy and often accidentally cut myself (last one was with a sweet potato)

We have nice sharp knives too.

Never thought about microwaving it. That might be a plan.

Obviouspretzel · 22/12/2018 20:40

It's miles harder than a carrot!

BreconBeBuggered · 22/12/2018 20:41

I think the issue is chopping the unwieldy buggers up and taking off the skin, am I right? They're tricky if you have small hands and feeble wrists, as I do. However, ready-chopped ones don't taste as good.

OhdDarlingClementine · 22/12/2018 20:41

Swede and butternut squash are my vegetable nemesis'.

DD begs me to do them promising to prep them but I always end up having to risk life and limb because she scrapers when I get them out Angry.

Wouldn't like pre cut though, it goes all dry.

TeeniefaeTroon · 22/12/2018 20:41

I buy mine from Asda, either on its own or with carrots.

gimmethedietcoke · 22/12/2018 20:42

Does ready chopped even exist still? I never ever see it. Who needs pre chopped broccoli? I am sure pre chopped swede is much more important in the veg cooking situation.

halfwitpicker · 22/12/2018 20:42

Anyone who thinks a swede and a carrot are the same needs their heads reading.

I'm with you, op.

Tesci are doing veg for 29p, broccoli, parsnips etc.

OhdDarlingClementine · 22/12/2018 20:42

She scarpers not scrapers.

PumpkinKitty82 · 22/12/2018 20:43

Cutting swede is like cutting through a boulder !
I just peel it first then hack at it , best I can do

mimibunz · 22/12/2018 20:43

I don’t even bother with Swede. It’s flavourless to me.

gimmethedietcoke · 22/12/2018 20:43

I do like swede. With a bit of butter and black pepper.

pfwow · 22/12/2018 20:45

It's hard chopping swede. I hand a large knife to my large husband. It's ok once you've cut it in half. Perhaps the trick is to buy smaller ones.

FrogFairy · 22/12/2018 20:47

I have seen folk cook a butternut squash whole in a pressure cooker which makes it easy to peel and chop. Perhaps it would work as well for a swede, though not much help if you are without a pressure cooker.

Try googling singing swede if you want to have a bash at the mrcowave method.

annoyedofnorwich · 22/12/2018 20:48

Yes...like butternut squash, cook the bugger whole and scrape it out!

GruciusMalfoy · 22/12/2018 20:52

I've been tempted before to hammer the point of my knife into a Swede. They're absolute bastards to chop if they're whole!

I'll be trying it in the microwave next time.

mantlepiece · 22/12/2018 20:55

You need to get it into manageable pieces. Use a large sharp sturdy chefs knife. Cut of top ant bottom. Now you have flat surfaces to work with! Quarter the thing. Then use a potato peeler to get the skin off each quarter. Back to the chefs knife, dice to your hearts content.

I have heard of people putting a swede in the microwave. It actually has a name, a screaming swede! Haven’t tried it, sounds like it might explode.

Jessbow · 22/12/2018 20:58

Cut the beast in half
each half into slices,
THEN Peel.
Then dice the slices

3out · 22/12/2018 21:01

What mantle said :)

MrsStrowman · 22/12/2018 21:02

Last time asked DH to cut a swede, having nearly lost a thumb on my own previous attempt, I came back to the kitchen to find him washing up the hand axe we use for chopping kindling. To be fair to him, it worked

bellabasset · 22/12/2018 21:08

I have arthritis in my hands so can't cut Swede or butternut squash.
