To expect chopped swede?

gimmethedietcoke · 22/12/2018 20:34

I tend to cut my own veg normally and not buy pre prepared. HOWEVER, swede is such a bugger to cut. I can never see it pre chopped anywhere these days. Or it's mixed with carrot - which I do not want!!!

This is a real issue.

I always microwave my swedes. (That could sound so wrong if posted on the wrong thread Grin)

Iceland do a bag of frozen diced swede though, if that would help? No carrots!

Pythonesque · 22/12/2018 21:13

If you think swede is hard to peel and chop, I agree butternut squash is harder; but multiply by a factor of 10 and you get a Queensland blue pumpkin which was my Dad's favourite. They were bought and cooked only on condition that he was responsible for cutting pieces off it! Especially the first cut - no-one else could even get a knife into it.

DrWhy · 22/12/2018 21:15

DH came home from a recent food shop with bags of cut swede, not totally sure where it was - probably Asda based on where else he was that day. He knows that a whole one would have been handed straight to him to prep!

Snog · 22/12/2018 21:15

Its weird because you can get frozen butternut squash chunks yet not swede?

Floralnomad · 22/12/2018 21:16

I got a huge knife stuck in a swede last time I tried to cut one up , it had to wait for dh to release it , I was considering buying an electric carving knife and trying that .

IloveBaileysCheesecake · 22/12/2018 21:17

Cut the top off and put it back on holding the top in place with cocktail sticks. 15 minutes in the microwave then scoop out the inside. Job done and you keep your fingers

nicoala1 · 22/12/2018 21:17

Why is it so important to have this vegetable?

To me, this is why Christmas can be so stressful. But each to their own.

picklemebaubles · 22/12/2018 21:18

Butternut squash cooks whole in the slow cooker, then is easy to peel and slice. Maybe swede is the same?

I tend to whack the swede with a heavy knife, hard enough to get the knife stuck in the swede. then lift the knife with the swede still attached and whack the swede on the work surface a few times. That tends to drive the knife through the swede without my fingers being involved. Once it's halved, everything becomes easier.

LoveAScaryTaleMe · 22/12/2018 21:20

Apparently swedes are responsible for more accidents in the kitchen than any other food stuff. You're welcome !

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 22/12/2018 21:20

I love swede. Hate chopping it; it hurts! But mashed swede with gravy and mint sauce is delicious and if I could get it pre-chopped; I'd definitely eat it more.

I don't have a microwave Sad

FurryDogMother · 22/12/2018 21:22

There have been several mentions of microwaving swede on this thread, but no real explanations - honestly, it's a revelation! You simply stick the swede in the MW for about 10 mins (no need to pierce it or anything) - test it with a knife to see if it's soft, then cut the 'lid' off and scoop out the tender, soft innards. I used to hate peeling and copping swede, but microwaving is really the way to go!

Yambabe · 22/12/2018 21:22

Asda sell chopped swede with no added carrots

WisdomOfCrowds · 22/12/2018 21:26

Aldi do chopped frozen butternut squash. Not sure about the swede which is the devils own food

Cynderella · 22/12/2018 21:27

Definitely buy smaller, peel and cut into large pieces before dicing.

Knittedfairies · 22/12/2018 21:27

I think I’ve seen cutted up swede too.

NorksAreMessy · 22/12/2018 21:28

I am tucked up in bed, have had too much shepherds pie for dinner...but all I want now is a bowl of hot, buttery mashed swede with loads of pepper.

nicoala1 · 22/12/2018 21:31

Just roast a few root veg in the oven, job done. Unless you really love sprouts that is!

There is so much anxiety about Christmas Dinner. Honestly people will love the Turkey and stuffing and roasties. Veg come down the list really mostly so I wouldn't worry about it at all.

AGHHHH · 22/12/2018 21:32

Why is it hard to cut? It's no harder than a carrot

What mutant carrots have you been buying?! It's a LOT harder. A swede and a coconut are the only two foods I've had big trouble with.

** was a quote

BishopBrennansArse · 22/12/2018 21:34

Nuke it.

rose789 · 22/12/2018 21:36

Asda do pre chopped Swede. Cook it in the microwave in the bag then mash once done.
Or you can put the entire Swede in the microwave for 10 minutes until cooked and then just scoop out the innards

mineofuselessinformation · 22/12/2018 21:38

Top and tail it very carefully. Cut in half, using a large knife, sawing back and forth.
Peel each half and then lay flat and cut into strips (by sawing) and then cubes.
I'm arthritic and I can manage this if I am careful and go slowly.

gingerrubber · 22/12/2018 21:39

i agree swedes are the twattiest of veg to chop!!!! it's a very really problem!

Ironmanrocks · 22/12/2018 21:49

I have one thing to say.......Global Knives.
