To expect chopped swede?

I tend to cut my own veg normally and not buy pre prepared. HOWEVER, swede is such a bugger to cut. I can never see it pre chopped anywhere these days. Or it's mixed with carrot - which I do not want!!!

This is a real issue.

Nah, butternut squash is worse.

scarbados · 22/12/2018 21:53

Another vote for putting it in the microwave for a few minutes. Incidentally, I do the same with carrots since developing arthritis in my hands. It makes cutting them much easier and I don't spend the rest of the day swallowing paracetamol.

marylou1977 · 22/12/2018 21:58

American here. What is a Swede?

Skittlesandbeer · 22/12/2018 22:03

I’m learning a lot about swedes on this thread, for sure!

Not a traditional xmas dish where I live (think cold seafood platters), but I’ll think of you all next May when I’m making veggie soup!

richierichardsaunt · 22/12/2018 22:06

I like swede raw, dipped in salt.
I never cut mine, eat it like a salty swede apple

KurriKurri · 22/12/2018 22:06

I think you call them rutabagas Marylou Smile - it's a big turnippy thing but with orangy flesh.

I find them very hard to cut (ditto squah) because my hands are weak. yes there are much more serious problems in the world, but we're still allowed to mention smaller ones. Musin over how to cut swede doesn't mean you don't care about homeless people. (In fact I have prepared meals for homeless people and it involved cutting swede - and my hands got sore and I was less efficient in my meal prep)

I cut in half, then lay them cut side down on a chopping board and with a big solid knife go round the swede slicing the skin off from top to bottom of the cut half. Then trim off the top bit. Then cut into cubes once you have peeled the bugger.
I love swede - I think it is one of the tastiest vegetables, roughly mashed with lots of black pepper.

nicoala1 · 22/12/2018 22:07

So much anxiety over a vegetable! Must be Christmas lol ....would never be a topic of conversation any other time of the year.

But then again swedes and so on are a Winter veg. But why stress about them. lol. There are alternatives you know!

marylou1977 · 22/12/2018 22:09

Thank you KurriKurri. I figured it was something like a turnip, difficult to peel.

KnobOfStork · 22/12/2018 22:14

I always get the absolute rage around Halloween when people moan about how hard it is to carve a pumpkin because my mam used to buy me a swede to carve. I genuinely should have phoned Childline.

ChesterGreySideboard · 22/12/2018 22:14

A swede is a turnip.

Swede is just short for ‘Swedish turnip’.

sweeneytoddsrazor · 22/12/2018 22:17

Singing swede or frozen swede is the only way to go

FestiveNut · 22/12/2018 22:20

@picklemebaubles me too! Of course, once the knife is it it won't come back out so going through is the only option.

babysharkah · 22/12/2018 22:22

You need a Chinese chopper so it's nice and heavy, a sharp knife doesn't cut it (excuse the pun).

Incidentally my mum is from NI and calls swedes turnips and turnips swede. Does anyone else?

helpmedecidepleas · 22/12/2018 22:24

Oh I love singing swede! No chopping or peeling, you don't even need to pierce it. Put in the microwave for about 15 - 20 mins, cut the top off and scoop out the delicious inside!

sofasleeps · 22/12/2018 22:26

It works a treat in the microwave- stick it in a bowl first or you get sticky Swede juice all over your microwave which is a nightmare to clean off.

Screaming swede is right. It makes a racket like a kettle boiling on a hob.

WhenLifeGivesYouLemonsx · 22/12/2018 22:28

I pressure cook swede. Just peel it, pressure cook and then it goes lovely and soft. I prefer it mashed Xmas Grin

FadedRed · 22/12/2018 22:30

You can microwave swedes and scoop the flesh out!!!! REALLY???!!!
WOW!!!! I love Mumsnet!!!

Aridane · 22/12/2018 22:30

Asda do chopped Swede

Aridane · 22/12/2018 22:31

as do Iceland

MammaSchwifty · 22/12/2018 22:32

Look in the frozen section, in my local Morrison's they have frozen diced swede. So civilised.

tapdancingmum · 22/12/2018 22:32

Christmas day a couple of years ago I nearly sliced my thumb off cutting the swede. DH had to sit me down with a tea towel around it and holding it above my head whilst he washed the blood off it (the swede) and finished cutting it for me. Then he tended to me which he did very well so I didn't need to go to A&E....... I tend to use the coarsest bread knife to chop it in half before peeling it but may try the microwave trick this year.

Rogueone · 22/12/2018 22:43

gimmethedietcoke i hear you! I am going to try the microwaving from now on..

Bungalowbeth · 22/12/2018 22:47

I have the same issues with celeriac.

Magicstar1 · 22/12/2018 22:48

Our local grocery shop has a big knife behind the counter, so the owner can chop swede up for the older customers who can’t manage it.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/12/2018 22:55

I have the same issues with celeriac.

Try using the bread knife on it - saw it.

I do hope no Scandinavian lurkers read some of the previous posts out of context...
