To ask why you aren’t vegan

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 16:58

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Things I have done as a result of reading this thread;

  1. made meatballs with nduja sausage sauce for dinner last night
  2. asked DP to buy some fillet steak so we can have fondue on NYE
  3. Had a pigs in blankets sandwich for lunch

I love a lot food that is veggie or vegan particularly Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine but I'm an omnivore and content with that. Judge away !

littlemeitslyn · 23/12/2018 16:25

Yes you are very unreasonable

londonrach · 23/12/2018 16:28

Because i like to eat a full balanced diet as we designed to.

Oliversmumsarmy · 23/12/2018 16:30

I actually don't like meat.

I was forced to eat it throughout my childhood.

Remember chewing on a piece of meat and being told off because I couldn't swallow it.

Being told I was being ungrateful when I refused a bacon sandwich. Smell is awful and the taste is even worse.

I also remember that I was constantly doubled up in pain after every meal .

Being vegetarian meant I suddenly had a life.

I am probably vegan 90% of meals.
Ds and DD were both brought up vegetarian and I used to get from a few other motjers that I was doing my children a disservice as their growth would be stunted.

DD towers over me and is taller than her df. 6ft 2" in relatively modest heels and ds is about to over take his df who is just under 6ft.
I am really short so are both of our families.

I wonder whether they would have been basket ball players if I had fed them meat and not "stunted" their growth

anniehm · 23/12/2018 16:31

Because I like meat and cheese. Simple as that. I eat plenty of meals that are plant based actually but I'm not going to limit myself to a faddish diet for fashion. Keeping animals humanely is something I believe passionately in however they wouldn't be alive if we weren't eating them/drinking their milk!

londonrach · 23/12/2018 16:32

@sandbox. Being vegan isnt as good for the enviroment as you think. However if you enjoy that diet thats your choice. I like a balanced diet covering all food groups including chocolate cake! 😍. qz.com/749443/being-vegan-isnt-as-environmentally-friendly-as-you-think/

BillywigSting · 23/12/2018 16:32

Because most non accidentally vegan food isn't actually that nice.

Because I'm pretty sure the dairy, eggs and meat from the farms less than a half hour drive away are less bad for the planet than the sheer volume of air miles and water and destruction of natural habitat involved in nut milk, soy protein and tofu

Sandbox · 23/12/2018 16:36

I grow most of my own food and buy locally grown wonky veg. No choice is perfect but I try to make the best choices for me Smile

Avegemitesandwich · 23/12/2018 16:50

Vegan food just doesn't taste that good. It can't do really, you have cut out all of the really delicious flavours that come from animal products. There is only a certain amount of flavour you can get from plants, and although I have had a few OK vegan meals, you just don't get that breadth of flavour without animals products.

ReducedF00d1 · 23/12/2018 16:53

My friend runs a dairy farm. The cows are milked 4am & 4pm. Some of the cows are 20 years old and he loves all his animals. It's a hard life, you can't phone in sick and say to the cows, I can't milk you today ! He shows school children round the farm on pre organised days. How many of you have actually ever visited a working farm ?

RrreCansada · 23/12/2018 16:58

reduced how many of those cows have had the calfs taken from them so we can drink their milk? Every last one. It's a bovine version of The Handmaids tale!

ReducedF00d1 · 23/12/2018 17:09

The calves are fed by a machine. The farmer can tell via the computer how much each is eating and if they are not getting enough they are given extra care. In all the years of visiting I've never seen a distressed cow. Some people seem to be putting human emotions onto animals. Other people have cats or dogs and sell them. The old image of a person, hand milking a single cow on a 3 legged stool with a calf, is not economically viable in a world of a larger population. Do you eat food that is imported ? Rice, bananas, oranges, lemons, kiwi....

NotOnTheBench · 23/12/2018 17:21

...because if we had all been vegan, the human race would have died out long ago. And - ask all those who are starving and have no choice of fancy diets. Such a first world fad.

Yb23487643 · 23/12/2018 17:21

Organisation re shopping & cost & having to think about protein & vitamins

Chesneyhawkes1 · 23/12/2018 17:22

Because I love eating meat 🤷🏽‍♀️

gerispringer · 23/12/2018 17:30

You can be vegan without dying out
We wouldn’t need to keep unnaturally bred animals
It’s a choice for some
It is more difficult at first but it’s really not difficult in the long run.
I have visited a working farm it was horrible
How many of you have visited a working abattoir?

Awaywiththefairies1 · 23/12/2018 17:31

Because meat is tasty!

Flowersandbirds · 23/12/2018 17:31

Time is a massive factor for me. It’s getting easier but you have to cook a lot more food from scratch. Also the thought of not being able to whip up a fried egg sandwich or cheese on toast when time is short or I can’t be bothered. Finally because I worry about my kids being picky about what they will eat and developing food phobias.

ReducedF00d1 · 23/12/2018 17:35

Relatives who had ration cards, have you seen the portion sizes ? Secondly, lots of people in the world have no choice about what they eat. Strange that Veganism has become popular in a time of plenty in modern society. Then some people are using food banks. Some people in other countries live no where near a super market and live off the land or sea. The whole population cannot be Vegan !

gerispringer · 23/12/2018 17:37

Beans on toast
Avocado, peanut butter, marmite, salads, vegan mayo, felafels, hummus, all make quick and easy sandwich combos,
Soups of ,many varieties
Chillies
Curries
Pasta
Sweet potato combos all can be quick and tasty

ToftyAC · 23/12/2018 17:37

Because I was with a vegan for 16 years and the whole veganism thing sucked. Oh the sanctimoniousness. I’m with a confirmed carnivore now and I can actually enjoy food again.

csigeek · 23/12/2018 17:40

Because I'm an omnivore.

gerispringer · 23/12/2018 17:40

I enjoy food thanks.

PinaColada1 · 23/12/2018 17:40

I do think it’s a good thing. However I’m not against eating dairy, fish or meat - I just think we eat way too much of it and I hate the inhumane factory farming etc.

I’d be happy with fish and meat once a week, and less cheese and milk.

Daniellamoss · 23/12/2018 17:42

It tastes like shit and i want to keep my friends and not be known as a pushy twat.
