To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Because I am human, and we have evolved as omnivores. It's much easier for us to meet our nutritional needs if our diet includes animal products. This goes hand in hand with us enjoying these foods - it's because they are good & nourishing for us and help us thrive.
I try to choose sustainably, and not eat vast amounts more animal products than I need, from a diet perspective. But to be honest, I think it is natural for humans to eat & enjoy a diet incorporating animal products and I'm not going to faff about with b12 supplements and food I don't enjoy.

Monday55 · 23/12/2018 13:20

Because vegans are hypocrites! Bees are going extinct because of pesticides, and we need Bees more than anything.

FrankieChips · 23/12/2018 13:26

I know you’re asking people why they aren’t vegan but I have to say vegan food has improved so much over the years. My partner is practically vegan now because I do most of the cooking and he’s also watched some awful videos on slaughter houses.

Meat does taste good but I can’t eat it without thinking of the animal that used to be alive and didn’t want to die. It feels barbaric to me now. I hate going to restaurants and seeing animal legs hanging as some sort of macabre decoration.

PrincessDando · 23/12/2018 13:31

I love meat and believe we are designed to eat meat, fruit and vegetables, not all this processed carby crap that makes up the majority of what most people eat.

I have impaired blood glucose metabolism aka diabetes, and meat is one of the few things I can eat in abundance because it has no impact on blood sugar levels.

If I was forced to have a vegan diet I'm sure my blood sugar would be much higher. There's not many purely protein based vegan foods.

RhiWrites · 23/12/2018 13:34

I’m not vegan because I’m vegetarian. I do eat animal products (milk, cheese, honey, free range eggs) but I try not to buy them (leather, that is, I do wear wool). I donate to animal charities also.

I’m not vegan mainly because I do like cheese and I do a lot of gym so need the protein gains from eggs.

I think everyone should do what they can to save the planet and avoid death and suffering. I do what I feel able to right now. It’s easy to be vegetarian in the affluent western world in the 21st century.

lljkk · 23/12/2018 13:37

wish that we weren’t so disconnected from what we eat.

I don't grow my own lentils, black tea, tofu or bananas (yes, as a meat eater I sometimes choose to eat tofu). Or regularly visit where those things are grown. As a vegan I'd be just as disconnected from my food production as I am as an omnivore.

@Monday55 bees are not going extinct because of vegans. Most of the food grown with those pesticides is fed to animals.

And on that note meat has far more pesticides in it if the animals ate crops covered in pesticides than you’d consume if you just ate the plants- as they store in their fat, accumulating over time.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 13:54

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland just because we enjoy a food doesn’t make it good for us- I.e. bacon and all processed meats are is class 1 carcinogens, certified as definitely causing cancer (no plant based foods are).

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 13:55

@noodlenosefraggle oat milk is the best environmentally (cows milk is the worst).

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 14:00

@FixedIdeal he doesn’t find it hard work he spends about 5 minutes planning it and about 10 minutes cooking, he’s very lazy! Seitan is a lot of protein per gram.

Since going vegan over a year ago his strength has gone up.

BatsAreCool · 23/12/2018 14:04

bacon and all processed meats are is class 1 carcinogens

But things like UV radiation are also in that category aren't they. It just means that they are known to have caused cancer.

I am going to die of something and the longer I live the more chance of cancer in some form. Cancer is also not one disease it have many forms and risk factors. Even if I was a vegan the chances are I would still die of a heart attack or a cancer of some form but maybe not as high risk of developing bowel cancer.

Huggybear16 · 23/12/2018 14:12

I like milk alternatives (coconut, almond, etc) but not in tea and coffee. Cows milk is the only one I can drink in tea and coffee. I've tried them all and it just doesn't taste right to me.

MrsMaker88 · 23/12/2018 15:06

Lljkk I’m not sure what your point was in response to my comment with some photos of some fields? I said that in general, in our culture and times we are disconnected from our food. Are you just agreeing that’s the case with both meat and non meat? I don’t think anything I would find out about lentil production would completely stop me eating it but personally I don’t want to eat dead bodies, especially when I have no idea how it’s been kept and killed etc. I agree tho, there is much about non meat production I don’t know and in my ideal world I would grow and keep as much at home as I can. I’m starting with veg and chickens.

Bats are cool - we now know that smoking and excessive drinking will statistically likely shorten our lives. Having worked in a hospice and seen increasing numbers of younger people coming in at end of life it’s very sad and I’m convinced something in our diet is literally killing people younger than necessary. And (less melodramatically!!) is creating intolerances etc..

AliceScarlett · 23/12/2018 15:17

Morally superior vegan here. I eat plant based because I don't like the impact the meat and dairy industry have.
I know you asked for non-vegan opinions, but everyone needs to know about the sacrifices I make Grin

Truthfully, in a nutshell, it seems like a monumental hassle.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 23/12/2018 15:31

Because I don’t want to be

BeekyChitch · 23/12/2018 15:34

I would love to be vegan, be more eco friendly, have less of a carbon footprint etc but I am just so unorganised and food isn't high on my priorities. I have four vegan friends who seem to eat loads and it comes so easy to them. Maybe one day I'll get my shit together.

PurpleAndTurquoise · 23/12/2018 15:45

I really admire vegans and am grateful to them The more people who go vegan the better for all of us.
I am not vegan but try and have 2 or 3 vegetarian meals a week. Maybe I will try and have 2/3 vegan meals rather than vegetarian.

Bowlofbabelfish · 23/12/2018 15:53

Because I dont want to be. I presume vegans are vegan because they do want to be.

I’m ok with using animals for meat, milk, wool, fur etc. I do want high standards of husbandry, high standards for slaughter, antibiotics to be used as little as possible etc.

flowerycurtain · 23/12/2018 16:04

Lots of reasons.

I like meat and dairy.

I think eating a local, sustainable and seasonal diet is fine for the planet.

I think humans are deigned to be omnivores and it's much easier to get all the nutrition we need from a variety of sources.

fuzzyduck1 · 23/12/2018 16:14

Yes YABU

foxtiger · 23/12/2018 16:14

I'm not vegan (or even vegetarian) but I think I could be, as far as enjoying the food is concerned. My main reasons for not being one are that I don't feel all that strongly about it emotionally/politically and that I live with three people who definitely don't want to be vegans, and I'm the main cook (and by far the best cook) so why make life more difficult for myself?

fuzzyduck1 · 23/12/2018 16:18

So where does your plant based food come from?

I’m guessing all over the world and mostly by plain which means your distroying the planet in your own little way

Sandbox · 23/12/2018 16:21

I’m vegan because of the environment and animals, plus it’s cheaper, easier, tastier, quicker and healthier
