To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

@Shadowboy the stats are that animal agriculture even if local is significantly worse than a plant based diet with imported food. It would not be sustainable to feed the billions of chickens killed each year on veg scraps. I doubt I would have enough veg scraps a day to even feed one, is that really all they eat?

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 23/12/2018 05:22

How is low carb/healthy fat difficult for vegans? I would have thought that was easier? Not being difficult just really don’t see that. (It may be very samey, but many restrictive diets are anyway)

AloneInMyHead · 23/12/2018 05:22

That will be a problem, if I ever start giving a fuck.

And you just confirmed I was right.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:22

@kateandme so is it ok to kill a dog as long as it is treated by high welfare and I eat it?

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:24

@kateandme in terms of “pushing” it- I can’t force you to do anything I can only say the facts, what you choose to do then is up to you.

But as to why I bother to say anything at all- and I will get attacked which is not fun- again I say, if you were the victim, how quiet would you want me to be?

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:26

@MusicToMyEars800 what vegan food have you tried that was bland and tasteless? Given that all herbs and spices are vegan that’s quite surprising.

Pernickity1 · 23/12/2018 05:26

kateandme the tone I used makes it sound vulgar because the whole thing IS vulgar. You can portray farmers as loving, caring pet owners all you want but that’s not the reality - even the kindest, most “ethical” farmer is profiting off the misery of animals end of.

Like I said I’m not vegan/vegetarian, I don’t have an agenda but I’m not going to lie to appease myself and other meat/dairy eaters.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:27

@nicoala1 you can care about children who are starving or abused while not harming animals? They aren’t mutually exclusive.

WardrobeInCrisis · 23/12/2018 05:28

Because I like travelling too much and to areas where it was cause those hosting me extreme difficulties. Plus part of travelling is experiencing local food!

Try explaining to someone hosting you that you are refusing their local delicacy. It's rude.

Being vegan is on the whole a first world privilege. Some exceptions (India for eg) but on the whole it is.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:29

@FixedIdeal perfectly easy to get enough protein as a vegan, my husband body builds and has 130g a day.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:31

@Yidette86 what did you try? There’s so much more available now, being vegan is much more convenient and loads of the food is delicious (some of course is nasty like with any food).

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:33

@BigMosquito you can make your own nut cheese, 5 ingredients, see above.

It is possible to be coeliac and vegan if you want to be, even if just at home to start with so you’re not inconveniencing anyone.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:34

@BroomstickOfLove what did you eat? It’s perfectly possible to be healthy as a vegan but maybe there was something you weren’t getting?

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:36

@Cloudsurfing most soya is fed to animals. Animal agriculture is proven to be worse for the planet. Cheese is not good for you. It’s poasible to eat a whole foods plant based diet.

Fantail · 23/12/2018 05:40

I can and do eat meatless meals, but it is difficult. I eat 30g of carbs a day. It is a very rare occasion that I can eat lentils and pulses. They are high in protein, but also high in carbs.

I also have a pre-disposition in that I struggle to absorb minerals. I do better health wise when eating iron/zinc/magnesium etc from food.

Also, not all T1 can use synthetic insulin.

I’ve spent a lot of time over the last 3 years sincerely diagnosis of not just one, but two auto-immunise conditions working out how to manage them so I can operate at 100%.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:41

@CrazyToast try www.challenge22.com/challenge22/ they have qualified dieticians who can advise on what to avoid for your thyroid.

I batch cook on Sundays it doesn’t take too long, make curries, chillis, stir fries, risotto, lasagne, other pasta dishes, Thai style dishes, enchiladas, veggie burgers, shepherds pie etc etc. If you want any help or ideas just say Xmas Smile

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:43

@OhYouBadBadKitten it’s possible to eat a low processed whole foods plant based diet if that’s the main barrier for you?

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:45

@KattInAHat she has stood outside a slaughterhouse and heard them scream, that’s hardly propoganda.

I fact check everything and yep animal farming is animal cruelty. No humane way to kill an animal that doesn’t want to die.

saganorenscarandcoat · 23/12/2018 05:45

I'm not Vegan as when I tried it out I spent all my time farting. Plus I like meat.

Effendi · 23/12/2018 05:48

Bacon and cheese.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:48

@NameChanger22 well done, it’s not easy to admit when you’ve been wrong before too (I can admit it too, former veggie who was very defensive about my consumption of eggs and dairy Blush)

what did you get in your Christmas shop? As we got so much good stuff we don’t feel we’re missing out, actually the opposite! Super excited about it all.

ginandbearit · 23/12/2018 05:49

fantail look at #meatheals and Mikaela Peterson on youtube who adopted an all meat diet to cure auto immune issues . Not everyone does well on a vegetarian let alone vegan diet and many ex vegans and vegetarians have gone back to meat eating due to health issues .

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:54

@Fantail I could give you links to how being vegan is better for autoimmune diseases but I won’t because I think you should speak to a qualified dietician and certainly not anecdotal evidence.

kiedaddy · 23/12/2018 06:03

I think it's the labels as issues here. I just tried to not eat meat as often as possible but I'm not strictly vegan as sometimes it's hard to avoid things (at someone else's house or in restaurants).

Fantail · 23/12/2018 06:14

I have actually worked with a nutritionist and dietician for the last three years. My hb1ac is at non-diabetic levels and my other condition is also perfectly controlled currently. This is entirely a result of how I eat. My endo is also super supportive. Oh, and T1 diabetes isn’t curable, nor is my other condition.

For some people, being vegan will help manage health condition, but in my case what I’m doing now works.

If I need to change I will experiment again, and if eating less meat or animal products works then that’s what I would do.

I’d actually like to have a wide variety of dietary options open to me. But I don’t.
