To ask why you aren’t vegan

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 16:58

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

@Bezir8 what does ethical eggs/ dairy look like?

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:44

@Pernickity1 you can absolutely do it! There are so many alternatives it doesn’t take as much willpower as you think! Start a thread on the vegan section of mumsnet if you want some ideas and support.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:47

@ilsalund2018 have you seen the environmental impact of animal agriculture? It’s far worse than tofu Hmm

Also easy to get all essential amino acids on a vegan diet. World’s first vegan went vegan in the 1940s and died aged 95 in 2005.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:48

@ilsalund2018 vegans are against breeding pets we support adoption of the cats/ dogs that are already here and many vegans adopt ex battery hens.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:51

@kateandme of course you have empathy, but you can’t truly love someone and also kill them for no reason (we can just eat something else).

I’m sure the personal attacks on me will begin in a minute for saying this but it comes from a place of defensiveness. If you were the victim how quiet would you like me to be?

KeiTeNgeNge · 23/12/2018 04:52

Because I don’t want to be a vegan

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:52

@Aceinthehole most vegans also love meat, fish, eggs and dairy but they don’t eat them as there are plenty of delicious alternatives that involve far less exploitation and cruelty.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:54

@nowifi veganism can be so cheap and accessible (I.e. pasta that you mention is usually vegan).

BadLad

You're pathetic.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:55

@Juanbablo would you like to find a good alternative? Which have you tried?

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:58

@DwangelaForever most quorn isn’t vegan but there are lots of delicious non- quorn subs out there Smile most vegans like meat too but choose not to eat it because of the cruelty and/ or environmental and health impacts. If you’d like some suggestions just say! There’s good vegan cheese now too (lots of options but very subjective on which one you’ll like). The milk to make the cheese would have been life to the calf Sad

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 04:59

@hiddeneverythin most vegans like meat and dairy too, and it used to be all we knew. If you’re interested in learning more about other options would be happy to help Smile

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:03

@Anothermothersusername someone can’t help what their dad does that doesn’t make them a hypocrite.

I do agree the protest at the steak house wasn’t very helpful but I understand that those who did it probably felt so upset about the 56 billion animals killed a year and just wanted to do something, that’s not the kind of advocacy I agree with though. Efforts are best put into education and helping those who want to make a change but aren’t sure how.

BigGreenOlives · 23/12/2018 05:04

Because a lot of pulses make my ulcerative colitis flare up. Need to keep my iron levels up.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:04

Does everyone who says bacon know it’s a class 1 carcinogen- definitely causes cancer?

By contrast no plant food, however processed, is a certified cause of cancer of any class.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:06

@noodlenosefraggle why wouldn’t you want to go fully vegan out of interest? There are lots of ways to get delicious tasting food without eggs, meat and dairy.

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:08

@thereallifesaffy there’s evidence imported plant based food is still environmentally better than local meat (and a lot of animals in U.K. are fed on imported grain and soya).

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:10

@PatricksRum once you’re used to it it’s no faff at all- actually it’s a joy Xmas Smile

And vegans don’t think they’re above others- we don’t even think we’re above non human animals, we’re all just earthlings sharing this planet together.

BadLad · 23/12/2018 05:11

AloneInMyHead

That will be a problem, if I ever start giving a fuck.

WereYouHareWhenIWasFox · 23/12/2018 05:12

I think true vegans are the only people who are making a (small) difference actually. I hate when vegetarians become so sanctimonious and then you discover they drink milk, are they a little bit lacking in critical thinking skills about what the dairy business actually entails?

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:13

@Honeyroar you can make your own vegan cheese from nuts

cleanfooddirtygirl.com/cashew-cheese-easy-recipe/

Just 5 ingredients Smile

kikisparks · 23/12/2018 05:16

@AliTheMinx a lot of vegans love meat and dairy but there are loads of delicious alternatives Smile most restaurants have vegan options these days and I’m happy to bring my own food to places but all my friends like me so have wanted to cater for me so hasn’t been a problem.

kateandme · 23/12/2018 05:17

kikisparks U won't see it from my point of view because that's not your point-of-view but please don't tell me what I can and cannot love. And then go on to debate what killing someone means I'm not killing my sister. There is a difference. I can still have respect and kindness and treat animals with with our highest regard 4 they're welfare

Fantail · 23/12/2018 05:18

Because I eat a low carb/healthy fat diet to control my T1 diabetes. Makes it exceptionally hard to eat vegan.

kateandme · 23/12/2018 05:18

Why are you having to push it home so much can't you just let people be how they want to be it's to you doing something wrong but not to them and not to everyone this is what I mean by going on at people trying to make your point talking from a higher ground etc etc
