To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Kat the fact remains that they still die. Sterile conditions do not relieve them of the knife that slits their throat.

nowifi · 22/12/2018 22:32

Not read the thread but would love to be vegan. Main reasons for me

  1. I don't feel I have the time to prepare food in a vegan way (toddler at home barely let's me have time to make pasta)
  2. I don't think I can afford it
  3. I don't feel it's that accessible to me, the produce in this country is not fresh like it would be in other countries.
Juanbablo · 22/12/2018 22:33

I'm not vegan because I really love cheese and I haven't been proactive about finding a good alternative. I am vegetarian.

DwangelaForever · 22/12/2018 22:38

Because I like meat and hate (Well tolerate) vegetables and I'm allergic to quorn.

DwangelaForever · 22/12/2018 22:39

And also cheese is life. Xmas Grin

cdtaylornats · 22/12/2018 22:52

Think on Vegan killers

hiddeneverythin · 22/12/2018 22:54

Good thread! I like meat and dairy and it's what I know

mortifiedmama · 22/12/2018 22:58

In no particular order;

  • I like meat, I know how it comes to my plate and I'm ok with that.
  • I'm allergic to beans and cant eat soya.
  • learning new recipes takes time and energy I don't have at the moment.
Picknickers · 22/12/2018 23:00

Because bacon. The end.

kaytee87 · 22/12/2018 23:01

Because I'm human and humans are omnivores.

Canibuildasnowman · 22/12/2018 23:03

Because - what a bloody ball ache.

Canibuildasnowman · 22/12/2018 23:03

However, mostly pescatarian.

Anothermothersusername · 22/12/2018 23:06

Can’t be bothered, like meat too much, find the whole vegan political agenda really off putting. Wasn’t there a demo in a steakhouse recently and the dad of one of the protesters has become a multi millionaire through a meat supply business? Talk about hypocritical!

BunsOfAnarchy · 22/12/2018 23:06

Bacon

thereallifesaffy · 22/12/2018 23:06

I'm a good cook and currently catering for a vegan home from uni. It's a pain. And I'm not convinced all the ingredients are always better for the planet. Vegans def eat more imported food.
But i do accept the broad evidence that meat production is bad for the planet. So yeah I'm eating far less meat these days

noodlenosefraggle · 22/12/2018 23:08

How come everyone can afford to eat grass fed organic local meat but nobody is apparently eating the 3 for £10 cheapo supermarket meat? Is it not OK for people who can't afford to eat from the farm shop to eat meat? I don't want to go vegan. My DS did toy with the idea for a while so as a compromise we eat 2 vegan meals a week, and we may go to 3 or 4 from January. I don't think I'd want to go fully vegan though or even vegetarian.

1hello2hello · 22/12/2018 23:09

Because i like meat, eggs, cheese. Because more than once I've known medics advise that vegan is not sufficient for people with serious / life-limiting illness. If you can I believe better to get protein, iron, vitamins etc through food than manufactured supplements.

PatricksRum · 22/12/2018 23:11

Too much faff. And I don't like the way vegans think they're above others.

HollyandIvyarelivingitupagain · 22/12/2018 23:22

My dd is pescatarian so I am by default. She doesn't eat meat for environmental reasons, not animal welfare(we live rurally and fully understand the animal point of view but are pragmatic.
Processed vegetarian and vegan food is not always nutritionally good and I'm also not sure how to balance a vegan diet without resorting to vitamin supplements.
We are staying with relatives at Christmas and having a vegan Christmas meal which I know will be tasty.I am supplying vegan wine.

Honeyroar · 22/12/2018 23:24

I am veggie and already eat a lot of vegan food, and enjoy it, but I'd miss cheese, that's what puts me off. I know there are vegan alternatives, but I try to eat non processed food and vegan substitutes are often processed crap. I don't mind eating eggs as I've got my own hens, and don't have a problem with honey. I hate the dairy industry though, so need to make more effort to move towards vegan.

AliTheMinx · 22/12/2018 23:27

I love meat and dairy, and am not too keen on veg! I love eating out and would hate to have to worry whether there were things I could eat, or be a burden to hosts at dinner parties. I don't think there's any need to be vegan in all honesty. To me, eating meat is just the natural food cycle. Some of the vegans I know are quite preachy, which is annoying..but not all, obviously... Smile

GummyGoddess · 22/12/2018 23:54

@Hogglesballs Not weightlifting, bodybuilding, they're two different sports. I'll never be an olympic weightlifter, I have much more fun with bodybuilding Grin

Hogglesballs · 23/12/2018 00:04

Same point though. Protein from meat isn't magical.

Wingingthis · 23/12/2018 00:05

As a middle ground - try and consume less meat & animal products? Then you’re still helping to make a chance. Say having vegan dinners twice a week and vegetarian once?

Bezir8 · 23/12/2018 00:10

Vegetarian but could never be vegan I like dairy too much and I know where my eggs/dairy come from and that it's ethical so no desire ethically to switch either.
