To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

I can't because all the Meat

MusicToMyEars800 · 22/12/2018 21:53

I'm not vegan because I love meat, fish and dairy and that's not going to change, I fo d all vegan food I've tried to be bland and tasteless. I don't think that will ever change.

Erm I am a vegan.

The worst thing about being a vegan, joining vegan sites and them posting videos of animal slaughter and animal abuse and you think why did I not go vegan sooner Sad

AGHHHH · 22/12/2018 22:00

Erm I am a vegan.

Isn't it obvious that the question is directed to those who are not vegan?

nicoala1 · 22/12/2018 22:00

TBH when little children who are starving or abused take precedence over edible animals is the day I will say OK.

Think about how humans treat humans very badly often. Just saying now before I am flamed. Thank you.

Yidette86 · 22/12/2018 22:00

My SIL was vegan and I'm very open to trying different foods, most things I tried (which was quite a bit) just tasted awful.

My SIL lasted a couple of years but turned vegetarian as it was more convenient.

RrreCansada · 22/12/2018 22:01

You either give a shit about animal abuse or you don't.
But then I couldn't care less if a meat eater dies of cancer to be honest. Which I'm sure will shock the "but bacon, lol" posters but I stand outside these slaughter houses and I these animals scream. We suffer as equals.
My disgust for people who fund this industry grows daily.

BigMosquito · 22/12/2018 22:02

Coeliac here. I try to be as non picky with food as possible and my DP's lovely grandma does an amazing job with catering for gluten free; I wouldn't want to have to make her or anyone cater for vegan and gluten free.

One of my friends is vegan and so I bought her some vegan cheese for a party I was hosting. The amount of extra ingredients (many of which seemed like total crap) in it, compared to normal cheese, firmly put me off.

MusicToMyEars800 · 22/12/2018 22:03

I've visited vegan sites and seen the slaughter and awful videos and read all the horrendous things. But that still doesn't change my feelings or views or opinions. Maybe that makes me a bad person Confused. I have considered it and also tried it, it's just not for me.

BroomstickOfLove · 22/12/2018 22:06

I tried being vegan. I felt ill the whole time, and then for another two months after I stopped.

Cloudsurfing · 22/12/2018 22:08

Because many vegan substitutes (like vegan cheese) is full of chemicals and additives do not as good for you as eating the real thing. Because many products classed as vegan are actually really bad for the planet, both ethically for the local populations and for carbon footprint as they’re flown from other countries (most quinoa, soy beans and soy products etc). It’s better to eat a meal containing locally sourced meat then it is to eat soy beans grown in other countries.

explodingkitten · 22/12/2018 22:10

I did vegan for a few months. It made me feel terrible. I feel better eating meat and cheese although most of my diet is still very plant based.

MysweetAudrina · 22/12/2018 22:10

Because I am an omnivore and enjoy food including animal products.

crosser62 · 22/12/2018 22:11

I am the only one in our house that is plant based, and i do cook meat & dairy for my family.
Like I say, I’m plant based for personal health reasons only.

VeniVidiViciTwice · 22/12/2018 22:13

Bacon.

VeniVidiViciTwice · 22/12/2018 22:17

Oh and I quite like dairy as well. I was dairy and egg and fish free (and soy) when my youngest was a baby as she had allergies and was bfed and if I had to have cut meat out as well I would have cried way more than I did

WomanOfTime · 22/12/2018 22:17

That's a point do vegan mums still cook meat for their kids or do you all have a vegan diet ?

I can't see that someone who believes eating animals is ethically wrong would feed their children meat!

It might be different for those who are vegan for health reasons or because they just don't like the taste of meat/animal products.

Platypusfattypus · 22/12/2018 22:18

Cheese

CrazyToast · 22/12/2018 22:21

I was just thinking about this today. I'd like to be vegan but I wouldn't know what to eat. I'm not a big cook and I don't have time for a lot of food prep and cooking. I like my tea as in cuppa and Ive tried all sorts of milk alternative. Soy milk is ok but I cant have that due to underactive thyroid.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/12/2018 22:22

so much vegan food seems to be factory produced stuff that is unrecognisable as food. I'd much rather have as much natural and locally produced food as possible

KattInAHat · 22/12/2018 22:23

You either give a shit about animal abuse or you don't.

You’re either a patronising git or you’re not.

Veterinary surgeon. Worked on farms in the UK. Worked in slaughterhouses. Educated myself via real life, rather than propaganda created to be deliberately provocative.

Whichever foods you eat, animals will be harmed to an extent. The farming and slaughter of animals in the UK is not perfect, but welfare standards are generally high.

LizzieSiddal · 22/12/2018 22:27

But then I couldn't care less if a meat eater dies of cancer to be honest.

You do your cause so much good. Hmm

I wouldn’t be vegan as humans are meant to have a balanced diet and that includes protein, and a small amount of meat is very good for you. I do think however that people need to eat less meat.

Aceinthehole · 22/12/2018 22:27

Because I really love meat, fish, eggs and dairy 🤷🏼‍♀️
