...to return work Christmas gift

Noodella18 · 21/12/2018 09:25

Given an expensive hamper from work for Christmas (very lucky as it's been a tough year for them (small business) and I know lots of people don't get anything at all from their work.)

Hamper is from large department store. WIBU to return it and use the store credit for something that won't make us fat? I don't have the receipt, so is it even possible?

What's in the hamper? Why will it make you fat, just don't eat it all at once.

Bluelady · 21/12/2018 09:28

The store won't take it back. Just enjoy it, a hamper's not going to make you morbidly obese.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 21/12/2018 09:28

I wouldn't personally plus I don't know whether you'd get a credit not without a receipt. Seems a bit callous to be thinking about doing it to me.

Kemer2018 · 21/12/2018 09:28

Ring the store or contact via their website. Not facebook, in case a colleague sees.

Ticcinalong · 21/12/2018 09:29

Drop it at the food bank and make some other people’s christmas. You clearly don’t appreciate it so give it to someone who will.

Intohellbutstayingstrong · 21/12/2018 09:29

YABU. A lovely gesture from your employers. I would think that was incredibly rude.

Eliza9917 · 21/12/2018 09:29

Give it to a good bank or refuge if you don't want it Hmm

Eliza9917 · 21/12/2018 09:30

*food

crispysausagerolls · 21/12/2018 09:30

Wtf is wrong with some people why would you even consider doing this

guiltynetter · 21/12/2018 09:31

ticinnalong excellent idea. food bank and let other people get 'fat'.

TheBigBangRocks · 21/12/2018 09:31

Give it them back so they can let somebody who is grateful have it. Very crass to try and return it as it doesn't match your expectations.

ScottishSantasack · 21/12/2018 09:34

Eating indulgently over Christmas won't make you fat. It's the other 51 weeks of the year that will finish that.

YNVUU and ungrateful

Have a Biscuit you go to with the your hamper

ScottishSantasack · 21/12/2018 09:34

YBVU so autocorrect

TooTrueToBeGood · 21/12/2018 09:36

Legally, they have no requirement to accept you returning it just because you don't like it. If it were faulty / not fit for purpose that would be differrent but that is not the case here. A lot of stores accept gift returns as a courtesy but food is different as it generally has expiry dates and could have been tampered with so they can't really put it back out for sale.

Noodella18 · 21/12/2018 09:36

Haha, the wrath of MN! It's a lovely present, it's just we've got a baby coming and thought I could use the money for equipment for that, feels a bit silly gorging myself on fancy chocolate when we don't even have a cot yet. But sounds like I should just treat myself instead!

Doubt they will take back food product.

Share the goodies out.

Why the fat issue? Is it a Hamper full of lard and sugar cane?

bridgetreilly · 21/12/2018 09:39

It depends what sort of hamper it is. If it's all dried/tinned/bottled goods and the whole thing is wrapped and clearly unopened, they might be willing to exchange if you go today or tomorrow. I don't think that it's particularly cheeky to exchange a work gift. It hasn't been personally selected for you, no one will have their feelings hurt, and you might as well have something you'd prefer.

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 21/12/2018 09:39

So you think the gift-giver should pay towards your cot instead?!
That's veering very closely into CF territory.

If you don't want the hamper then re-gift it, you can't take it back to get cash!

Buy your own bloody baby gear.

YABVU.

Dungeondragon15 · 21/12/2018 09:39

They won't take food back. Just eat it or give it to someone who will appreciate it. Use your own money to buy a cot.

SleepingStandingUp · 21/12/2018 09:39

OP if you'd said money was tight and you wanted to umget vouchers to spend on baby stuff you'd have got a totally different response to oh I can't eat the hamper, I'll be soooo fat if I do.

It's Christmas, you can't drink, a bit of nice chocolate etc is a nice treat. The other bits will be stuff you'd to buy anyway. Enjoy it.

NoParticularPattern · 21/12/2018 09:40

You do know there’s no requirement to eat it all at once right? It’s not going to make you fat if you eat it sensibly...

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 21/12/2018 09:41

A hamper is not going to make you fat, what an odd reaction to such a lovely thoughtful gift.

Is there more to this story? Otherwise I am confused as to why your first reaction would be to want to return it for store credit?

NancyDonahue · 21/12/2018 09:42

Most hamper stuff has long dates so you don't need to gorge it all at once. Save the chocolate for after the baby comes and you need a treat.

Finfintytint · 21/12/2018 09:42

We regifted ours.

Noodella18 · 21/12/2018 09:43

Lots of people picking up on the fat thing - it was lighthearted, I'm not worried about my weight (well, apart from being pregnant and feeling big!) Was just referencing the fact it's Christmas and there will be loads of food knocking round. The key thing is that I wondered if it would be justifiable to spend the money on something we actually need at the moment rather than my own indulgence.
