...to return work Christmas gift

Noodella18 · 21/12/2018 09:25

Given an expensive hamper from work for Christmas (very lucky as it's been a tough year for them (small business) and I know lots of people don't get anything at all from their work.)

Hamper is from large department store. WIBU to return it and use the store credit for something that won't make us fat? I don't have the receipt, so is it even possible?

This is a weirdly vicious thread. Shops do take food back. Most places do an excellent returns service these days.

They don’t have to take it but they might well as long as it’s clearly from them and unopened.

Yanbu.

Kikidelivers · 21/12/2018 18:22

@UnderMajorDomoMinor

Sainsbury’s. Marks and Waitrose do NOT accept return food if you have left the premises. Unless there is something wrong with the food

Fact

Kikidelivers · 21/12/2018 18:23

Ah unless it’s all dry food, in which case they will accept if you have a receipt.

Noodella18 · 21/12/2018 18:25

Hold onto your pants everyone; I got in contact and can confirm that the large department store in question WILL INDEED accept the hamper for exchange...

Cheapskate

Noodella18 · 21/12/2018 18:30

@mirialis thanks! You too! Wine (alcohol free for me)

Noodella18 · 21/12/2018 18:33

@positivelyperf @kikidelivers thanks! I'm well excited to get something for the mini noodle! Happy Christmas!

I’m sensing an awful lacking of Christmas spirit around Mumsnet tonight. 🤣

Thank fuck I give presents to my staff telling them that I hope they enjoy it or if they don’t, at least save money by regifting. It’s all good.

WaterOffaDucksCrack · 21/12/2018 18:39

Giving it to a foodbank or homeless charity is a good idea. I'd also think about giving it to somewhere like a care home. Where I manage we buy our residents christmas gifts. I know of may homes that don't meaning those without family have nothing. And generally speaking those with dementia have a sweet tooth so it would be perfect!

SoupDragon · 21/12/2018 18:39

If you don't have the receipt they will usually only refund the current selling price.

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 21/12/2018 18:41

That's brilliant news Noodella. Merry Christmas and all the best for your forthcoming mini noodle.

StillNumb · 21/12/2018 18:42

You will need to get it back tomorrow as it's the sort of thing that will be in the sale on by Christmas Eve, and you will only get the reduced price as you don't have the receipt.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2018 18:43

John Lewis have already reduced their hampers.

mirialis · 21/12/2018 18:44

Don't know why I'm bothering to post for the people who haven't RTFT as they won't read this either....

My Mum tried to gift two hampers to a food bank and they didn't want them - I'm guessing some obscure loose leaf tea, port, tiny pot of rillettes etc. is not particularly helpful to them.

Blackness78 · 21/12/2018 18:44

OP, I get it...Don't be so hard on yourself. Enjoy the gift.

I hope you get the bits you need for your new arrival 😊

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 21/12/2018 18:46

I have to admit to finding it a bit odd that your first thought on receiving this would be 'we could use the money for baby stuff'. You don't have 'the money' (looks as if you will now, but that's beside the point), you had a gift from someone. I can't imagine this casting a very good light on you with your employer if it ever came out.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 21/12/2018 18:48

Many are already reduced so don't get your hopes up for your employers to pay for your cot.

Madbengalmum · 21/12/2018 18:48

🤷‍♀️As probably non returnable, why not regift contents and take back other items you bought for regifted folk for a refund and put money towards baby stuff ?

Honeyroar · 21/12/2018 18:54

Brilliant, go and put the refund towards something that is useful and wanted rather than sitting shovelling chocolate down you "to be grateful"! As long as you're not shoving it back at your employers shouting "this is shit" or giving them a list of things you require in November you're not being cheeky or rude. You've accepted it gratefully, then quietly used it in a way that makes you happy (returning it without them knowing!).

There are some very strange people on this thread. It doesn't mean OP can't afford a baby or pram if she wishes the £60 or whatever spent on the hamper could have gone towards something she really liked, that's all. Nobody has got hurt, nobody has been offended.

My lovely MIL used to buy us a hamper every year as a gift from the tree in early January. It was full of Xmas things (that we could've used at Xmas time, but that would be out or date by the following year) that were not used during the year, and loads of chocolates and alcohol that we were all trying to avoid post Xmas. Everything used to sit in the cupboards taking up room, then generally get thrown. It just used to seem like such a waste of her money. My SIL's family got one too, and they felt the same. None of us ever told her though. Thankfully it all stopped when she got dementia.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 21/12/2018 18:55

If you really don't want it, someone else could do with it.

I won a hamper in a raffle shortly before Cjristmas one year - really didn't need it, house was stuffed with food. Phoned the local Sally Army and someone came within half an hour to collect it.
