To say i never liked Mary Poppins

I found her annoying and smug, I hated the chiminiy sweep and his trans Atlantic mockney accent. I just never liked the film (loved sound of music though!). I have just watched trailers for Mary Poppins returns and immediately found new Poppins annoying and smug in the seconds I saw of her so she is spot on! I feel like I should love the film as it is a classic etc. but I never have. It had all the ingredients of other children's films of the same era that I did love, singing and Julie Andrews (sound of music), magic and fantasy (Charlie and the chocolate factory the original not the Depp travesty), children and sentimentality (Oliver!) etc. but it just left me cold.

What classic films do you lot not "get"?

I love Mary Poppins but haven't really been able to get into the Sound of Music.

MadisonAvenue · 21/12/2018 09:07

I’ve never seen the original film.

YourEggnogIsBetterThanMine · 21/12/2018 09:08

I never liked Mary Poppins but I loved Bedknobs and Broomsticks. There, I said it!

redexpat · 21/12/2018 09:09

But she's practically perfect in every way!

elliollie · 21/12/2018 09:09

I loved the actual film but never understood how everyone in the film loved Mary Poppins as I always found her sharp and quite cold.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 21/12/2018 09:10

I much preferred Bedknobs and Broomsticks when young although I can't remember much about it now!

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 21/12/2018 09:10

The original book portrays her better, I think.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 21/12/2018 09:11

I agree she's not a likeable character. Or at least not to me as a child.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 21/12/2018 09:11

You must be a young un Madison. Mary Poppins was on TV every Christmas in my childhood without fail (late 70s-80s). Back when we had a handful of channels to choose from and no VCR.

I recommend the stage musical if you get the chance. Obviously it's the 'same' but it's also 'different'. Less saccharine than the film, more bitter-sweet.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 21/12/2018 09:12

I did and do love the Sound of Music.

JustJoinedRightNow · 21/12/2018 09:12

I’ve never seen it (that I can remember!)Shock I did love Bedknobs and Broomsticks though and my absolute favourite is the Sound of Music

XmasHolly · 21/12/2018 09:12

Even the author of the books, PL Travers, didn't like what Disney did to her Mary Poppins story to make it a film!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 21/12/2018 09:12

I like bedknobs too and chitty chitty bang bang!

Not so much aimed at kids but I absolutely loved tge Half a Sixpence fjlm and watched it whenever it was on.

IdaBWells · 21/12/2018 09:14

I don’t think Mary is supposed to be likeable! She’s actually this strange, magical person that seems to have a hypnotic effect on everyone. In the books she is quite prickly.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 21/12/2018 09:14

I found Chitty a bit freaky iirc!

bigmouthstrikesagain · 21/12/2018 09:16

Yes she is not appealing or approachable very authoritarian - I would not be surprised if she has bondage underwear under her Edwardian attire and a riding crop in her brolly!

AnOtherNomdePlume · 21/12/2018 09:17

Oliver! is a great film but Oliver Reed plays too good a villain and in my experience scares little children!

PillarsOfTheEarth · 21/12/2018 09:17

I'm with you on this OP. Also not a fan of Chitty - and it's just sooo long!

Becles · 21/12/2018 09:22

The books are much better than the film

Bedknobs and Broomsticks used lots of animated scenes cut from Mary Poppins

WhatwouldCJdo · 21/12/2018 09:22

YANBU. So perfectly smug.

theonetowalkinthesun · 21/12/2018 09:23

I never liked Mary Poppins! I agree, she wasn't likeable! I also never liked chitty chitty bang bang
And agreed - I DID like bedknobs and broomsticks!!

MyPoodleisWorthTenofYou · 21/12/2018 09:27

I’m a nanny and the amount of families that specify they want ‘a Mary Poppins’ is mad. What does it even mean HmmGrin

I didn’t like Matilda because they made it American. Ditto Charlie and the Chocolate Factory when they did it with JD.

jessstan2 · 21/12/2018 10:03

I've never seen Mary Poppins. I know what it is about and have seen bits of it on TV. Not my sort of thing though Julie Andrews has a gorgeous voice.
