To say i never liked Mary Poppins

I found her annoying and smug, I hated the chiminiy sweep and his trans Atlantic mockney accent. I just never liked the film (loved sound of music though!). I have just watched trailers for Mary Poppins returns and immediately found new Poppins annoying and smug in the seconds I saw of her so she is spot on! I feel like I should love the film as it is a classic etc. but I never have. It had all the ingredients of other children's films of the same era that I did love, singing and Julie Andrews (sound of music), magic and fantasy (Charlie and the chocolate factory the original not the Depp travesty), children and sentimentality (Oliver!) etc. but it just left me cold.

What classic films do you lot not "get"?

😱

MrsJayy · 21/12/2018 10:06

I don't like Mary poppins either the thought of the new one leaves me cold.

ShadyLady53 · 21/12/2018 10:06

YABVVU

She’s practically perfect. In EVERY way.

I’m feeling very offended by this thread.

HildaZelda · 21/12/2018 10:08

I liked MP and the original Willy Wonka. We want talk about the travesty that was Johnny Depp, that's why I won't be going to see the MP remake.
Don't like Chitty Chitty at all.
As a kid I loved Santa Claus, the one with Dudley Moore as Patch the elf.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 21/12/2018 10:09

I really liked Dudley Moore.

MrsJayy · 21/12/2018 10:09

Even the author of the books, PL Travers, didn't like what Disney did to her Mary Poppins story to make it a film!

I like the film about her with Emma Thompson the name of it escapes me but it is good.

PuppyMonkey · 21/12/2018 10:11

I’m another one who thinks she’s a proper hardfaced cow. Give me Nanny McPhee any day. The songs in Mary Poppins are also a bit shit.

And from the trailers, I really don’t think I’m going to be able to cope with Emily Blunt’s terrible posh accent in the new film.Confused

adaline · 21/12/2018 10:13

I love Mary Poppins.

But if you read the books she's not really supposed to be a nice character. She's a lot scarier/more magical in the books than how she comes across in the films.

The books are actually pretty good if you read them all and there are actually five Banks children in total, not just Jane and Michael as shown in the films.

MayFayner · 21/12/2018 10:15

I like Mary Poppins but it isn’t a patch on Sound of Music.

I much prefer the Maria character to Mary!

MissionItsPossible · 21/12/2018 10:27

YANBU OP, not at all! I’ve never liked Mary Poppins, the smug, sanctimonious bitch. Snow White can fuck off as well!

choli · 21/12/2018 10:29

I loved the books but found the movie embarrassingly awful.

InsomniacAnonymous · 21/12/2018 10:38

I have never seen the Sound of Music. I just don't like musicals, although I admit making an exception for Oliver! I was a bit taken aback by Emily Blunt's super-posh accent in a trailer for the new Mary Poppins film. I suppose she is well cast, as IMO she never comes across as the warmest of people and this is appropriate for the part.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 21/12/2018 10:45

I know exactly what you mean op but agree with others that I don't think she's meant to be likable. A bit like nanny mcfee 😉

The stage musical of Mary poppins is amazing though.

DarlingNikita · 21/12/2018 10:46

YABU. It's a masterpiece. Julie A nails her performance, as does Glynis Johns. 'Step in Time' is a dance and choreographical triumph and 'Let's Go Fly a Kite' is absolutely one of the great uplifting weepies.
I can't disagree about Dick van Dyke though.

NeedAGoodUsernameThatIsntTaken · 21/12/2018 10:55

YANBU I can't stand the Mary Poppins movie, one of my least favourite Disney films. Hate the characters, the music, everything about it. She is a total smug bitch

hmmhohmmm · 21/12/2018 10:59

YABVU

It's the best film ever!

She's a woman who makes me feel inferior but I would trade any day to be her and be able to sing and click fingers and things magically tidy themselves up

And I quite fancied the chimney man too

Kolo · 21/12/2018 11:05

In my head I loved Mary poppins. But I showed it to my kids the other week and discovered it was pretty cack. We gave up after supercalifragilistocexpialidocious. All that crap in the chalk drawing? What’s the point? I still want to see the new one though, and my boys were singing supercalifragilisticexpialidocious just this morning.

Sound of music is amazing, and I also love some of the other films the Mary poppins children were in. Gnome mobile being a top ten film.

IdaBWells · 21/12/2018 14:43

I love how all the mens are either intimidated by her or madly in love with her Grin!

IdaBWells · 21/12/2018 14:44

She is also massively vain.

DarlingNikita · 21/12/2018 14:59

I like that she takes pride in her appearance. I think it's notable that it doesn't seem to be for the approval of men but genuinely for herself.

The80sweregreat · 21/12/2018 17:21

Awful film , it's too long and she is smug. Songs are upbeat I suppose, but the chimney sweep big just goes on too long.
Only bit I liked was the ending ; when mr banks flies the kites abd it's all over!
I think the remake will be just as bad.

kaco · 21/12/2018 17:25

@MrsJayy The film with Emma Thomson was 'Saving Mr Banks'.

notacooldad · 21/12/2018 17:28

I've just seen Mary Poppind at the cinema this morning with four 11-13 year old girls. They have all loved it.
I don't remember the original MP.

MrsJayy · 21/12/2018 18:07

Ah yes thank you it is a great film

Whataboutbobbo · 22/12/2018 21:37

Didn't like Mary Poppins returns. Quite boring and nodded off in parts. Hyped up but very average.
