To go to asda at 7am on Saturday?

PumpkinPie2016 · 20/12/2018 18:55

I am working until tomorrow and so I need to do the last bit of the food shop on Saturday - I don't need loads but veg and a few other bits plus some normal household stuff.

It's obviously going to be busy and my local asda opens at 7am. So, my plan was to get there for 7am, do my shop and hopefully get out before it gets too manic.

I happened to mention it to someone who was Xmas Shock and Xmas Confused that I would consider getting up so early on Saturday.

So, AIBU to think this is a good idea and that I won't be the only one who does this?

When are you finishing your food shop?

I'm doing mine tomorrow morning but we're in Germany where the shops are shut on Sunday and only open till 2 on Monday so it'll be carnage on Saturday.

I used to work in Asda and it's like the seventh circle of hell on the days leading up to Christmas. I think you've got the right idea.

MrsPinkCock · 20/12/2018 18:59

I’ve done it for a 6am opening in the past and then headed off to work Grin

I’ve also stayed up until 2am and done it that way in the past.

It’s the only way to Christmas shop if you hate crowds!

Betsy86 · 20/12/2018 19:00

Go for it to be honest it sounds like a sensible plan! Why would you lounge around waiting for a more ‘acceptable ‘ time of day with the thought of the food shop at on the busiest weekend of the year hanging over you. Your friends nuts.
Go early, get home early have a nice coffee and chill and enjoy not being part of the choas that will be supermarkets this weekend.
I will be working in one 🙃

CakeNinja · 20/12/2018 19:00

I shouldn’t worry, I can say with some certainty that you won’t be alone at 7am Grin Grin
Although I’m not going!! It’s all coming in Sunday Xmas Wink

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 20/12/2018 19:01

Yes that’s what we are doing- 7am on Saturday Sainsbury’s; driving further away to one next to an m&s and Asda is case something we can’t get in one but can get in another

RCohle · 20/12/2018 19:03

I mean I wouldn't normally, but it's perfectly sensible at this time of year.

I guess it's a choice between a lie in and a hideously busy supermarket - different people might prioritise differently!

Betsy86 · 20/12/2018 19:03

Chaos even 😒 Been a long week already ha x

imip · 20/12/2018 19:03

I used to go shopping weekly on sat morning T 7 at Sainsbury’s. Dh would stay say home with the 4 dc then 5 and under.

A number of depts are closed that early. At my v big Sainsbury’s, deli was shut as was pharmacy. Bakery hadn’t anyfresh bread at that time and they couldn’t sell alcohol.

RocketQueen21 · 20/12/2018 19:04

Do it absolutely 100% !
I’m off tomorrow for my local Sainsbury’s which opens at 6am , I’ll be up at 5 am
By failing to prepare

You are preparing to fail 😉

AppleKatie · 20/12/2018 19:06

Do it. But steer clear of my local sainsburys at 10.30pm sat when I’m doing mine 😂

Itsnotme123 · 20/12/2018 19:08

I’d go at 10pm, 2am, 7am, anything to avoid the madness.

ThePinkOcelot · 20/12/2018 19:08

The shops are shut for 1 day. I really can’t understand the angst tbh!

adaline · 20/12/2018 19:11

I've never understood the angst around the "big Christmas shop".

I'm going on Saturday simply because it fits in with work - I won't finish until home until 6pm Christmas Eve and I work all day Sunday so that's my only choice!

AppleKatie · 20/12/2018 19:12

I don’t want to go to the shops for min 4 days. During that time I have meals to prepare and host for large numbers.

Confused

I don’t want to sit for hours in a gridlocked carpark so I go at an antisocial time.

Much like much of the rest of the population. I’m not sure it’s really that difficult to understand Hmm

BrizzleMaverick · 20/12/2018 19:13

We are doing the same on Saturday.

My mother in law offered to look after the kids while I went shopping during the week but would probably needed to go again for the fresh stuff so I'm dragging my husband to Asda on Saturday. It was his suggestion to go early.

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 20/12/2018 19:15

YANBU but don't expect it to be quiet, I'm sure they'll be plenty of others doing the same!

PickAChew · 20/12/2018 19:19

I ad to pop to our very nearby retail park to pick up some prescriptions, this morning. I walked and arrived just after 9:30 and it was already rammed. Sainsburys was tolerable, but markses, which I popped into for some just ordinary non Christmas food for the weekend, was hell. And I almost got reversed into in the car park, after I put my trolley away. I needed a stiff cup of tea, after that.

4yearsnosleep · 20/12/2018 19:20

It's normal. It's not a typical Saturday

HildaZelda · 20/12/2018 19:20

I have a lot of it done, but I'll be back in Aldi in Sunday to pick up the last few fresh bits and pieces, veg, bread, milk etc.
Will spend Xmas eve cleaning the house as my friend arrives that afternoon for a week.

ForalltheSaints · 20/12/2018 19:21

ThePinkOcelot well said. Nothing wrong with being out and about at 7am on a Saturday, but please don't buy enough food for a month.

John4703 · 20/12/2018 19:22

YANBU
I used to finish work at 03:00 and did my Asda shop at about 3:30am on my way home. It was not all that busy and certainly better than during the daylight hours. (I could not buy alcohol at night but could get everything else I needed)

wiltingflower · 20/12/2018 19:27

This is perfectly ok.

It's efficient, gets you up nice and early and in a productive state of mind. It's also understandable given it's Christmas time.

I guess the person you mentioned this to isn't someone who's used to early morning shopping and so may have been surprised as a result. I'm sure they'll have learnt that this is a thing though and may well even try it out.

danni0509 · 20/12/2018 19:28

Does anyone know if Tesco will be busy Sunday morning if I arrive at 9am?

It opens at 9.30 to browse and you can pay from 10am but I was planning to get there for 9am use petrol station first then get parking space only just passed my test and need 3 spaces next to each other to park so will arrive extra early Grin

AlwaysWantedToBeATenenbaum · 20/12/2018 19:30

I’m doing the same but tomorrow morning!!! Definitely the best way to go!

SoyDora · 20/12/2018 19:35

That’s about when we’re doing our Christmas food shop (the DC are up around then so DH will just get up and go). I’m pretty sure you won’t be alone!
