To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

The military will have superior surveillance and jamming capabilities vs the Police. They will almost certainly be able to find the people doing this now - it's looking as though the perpetrators actually don't mind being caught and are seeking to make a point of some kind.

Dadjoke
Amusing article. Not much actual sourcing or provenance though.

I very much doubt it. Not for quadcopters being operated at short range.

Some idiotic economist will have done the maths and worked out that the economic downside of shutting Gatwick for the day is less than the possible revenue of harassing drone users to stump up £500 quid for training and then a £100 license fee per annum for the next 50 years.

Governments tend to be wholly uninterested n savings over 50 years, they're really only concerned about the period up to the next election. Therefore it's highly unlikely that anyone will have authorised a false flag putting a big dent in our economy now for a highly speculative return over the next 50 years, particularly with the prospect of a no deal Brexit hanging over us an awful lot sooner than that.

brizzledrizzle · 20/12/2018 16:57

@whatdositmatteranyway I'm cursed - supposed to be going to the Carribean from GRotwick on Sunday.

Do you have trouble getting family and friends to travel with you?

We were stranded due to 9/11.

tobee · 20/12/2018 16:59

I definitely think it's Putin. But then I think it's Putin behind most things. I mean what else is there for him to, after all these years, apart from drop novichok, mess up elections, the Internet security etc? It's not like he's got to worry about fighting his own elections. He loves it. And most the Russian public seem to love it. Hmm

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 20/12/2018 17:04

The other EU countries have moved towards licencing for sales

So they'll buy an unlicenced one & not register it.

Drones are required to have software that bars them from flying near airports - this has obviously been disabled.

Licencing & laws only affect law abiding people - handgun ban anyone?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/12/2018 17:07

Whatever the motivation of these drone owners, it's future copycats which are really worrying me

I don't imagine most are like this, but if the ones who infest the local park in order to buzz/photograph the nearby school are anything to go by, I can well imagine them thinking of a bit of airport disruption as a terribly amusing thing to do Hmm

Some suggestions of counter-measures:

Obviously you need to have the kit to hand before you can do this stuff.

TheNativityDonkey · 20/12/2018 17:21

I'm thinking Russia tbh.

brizzledrizzle · 20/12/2018 17:24

I read that as kilt not kit and thought something entirely different.

Reallybadidea · 20/12/2018 17:29

I reckon it's Phillip May. His Christmas present to Theresa that she has enough peace and quiet to have a long soak in the bath.

WickedGoodDoge · 20/12/2018 17:31

Can I get opinions? If you were flying to London tomorrow (Heathrow) then back late Saturday from Gatwick, would you still go? I do not have good luck with flights! Have had £5k compensation over the last 18 months from airlines though obviously wouldn’t get anything in this case.

Ta1kinpeace · 20/12/2018 17:51

Wicked
What do your airline say?
Its going to be absolute CHAOS everywhere for at least four days IMHO

recently · 20/12/2018 17:59

Wicked - we are meant to be flying into Heathrow tomorrow. I can't see any cancellations for Heathrow. As for the flight back, I suppose it depends on how essential it is for you to get back for Christmas...

nickiredcar · 20/12/2018 18:01

I wouldn't go, there's not going to be any compensation paid out over this

recently · 20/12/2018 18:14

Well if there's no compensation surely it's better to try and go? Where are you travelling from? Could you get a train back if you need to?

WickedGoodDoge · 20/12/2018 18:14

My flight to Heathrow is still on and no cancellation being offered yet for Saturday. I’m not really fussed about when I get back and I’m not really fussed about the money. DH thinks I should go (taking teen DD to see the Christmas lights etc). I’m swithering. Grin

I was in St Lucia over 9/11 and was on one of the first flights to the US once the airspace was lifted. That was chaotic- suspect this might be similar.

Still swithering.

WickedGoodDoge · 20/12/2018 18:14

Oh, travelling from Edinburgh so could get a train back if any seats!

Whisky2014 · 20/12/2018 18:18

Not read the thread yet. I suspect it could be someone like putin at the helm of this.
This is not some hobbyist. This has taken a lot of planning, specialist equipment, good knowledge of the systems etx.

How fucking shit of them. What the fuck is the point.

recently · 20/12/2018 18:18

I think you'll be fine then!

Whisky2014 · 20/12/2018 18:19

Yes, I would go Wicked

Whisky2014 · 20/12/2018 18:26

Imagine if this is all a deterrent to take the eyes of something much bigger thats about to happen....tin foil hat well and truly on!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/12/2018 18:40

It's reported that Putin has used today's annual news conference to speak of poor relations following the Salisbury nerve agent attack; he said UK/Russian ties were at "a record low"

Makes me wonder ...

HowlsMovingBungalow · 20/12/2018 18:43

Today has shown that there was no special measures of dealing with something like this happening. That is very fucking scary.

Whisky2014 · 20/12/2018 18:52

Totally agree how. They fucking scan every 125ml bottle of body lotion but forget about the real security issues.
