To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

I think by Sunday you're going to be fine! Have they given an ETA for opening today?

BirdieInTheHand · 20/12/2018 14:02

Is the question "Why was it covered up?"

Culture mainly. To admit it happened would be to admit mistakes occurred or vulnerabilities exist. Better just to pretend everything is rosy, which is easy enough to do in a dictatorship whether there is no free press.

Ta1kinpeace · 20/12/2018 14:07

justaboy
jam the radio signals they use
Far too dangerous to do that near an airport.
THe frequency is one used for lots of other things at an airport

Sorry but I just do not buy that.
THe air industry has a long record of full disclosure of incidents.
If it happened the CAA would know and would have demanded changes, which would have been published.

DeepanKrispanEven · 20/12/2018 14:09

ever heard of bird strike that can sod up an engine mightly?

All Cabin Pressure devotees are well aware of that one.

Whatdoesitmatter, I think you need to stop trying to travel by plane, you're obviously the root cause of all the problems.

dingit · 20/12/2018 14:11

Even if they couldn't buy one, someone could build one if they wanted. I know this as my dd is currently designing and building one as part of her degree.

BirdieInTheHand · 20/12/2018 14:14

Ta1kinpeace you've not spent much time in the Middle East have you?! Grin

Ta1kinpeace · 20/12/2018 14:16

dingit
is she actually building every component
or is she buying in the radio gear / rotor hubs etc

the point is that making the sale of something illegal is pretty simple
making possession of it is nigh on impossible
therefore having such electronics without a licence has to become a no no

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/12/2018 14:17

Can we just put the water cannon idea to bed please - even the most powerful only have a range of about 200m. That's no distance at all.

Anticlockwatcher · 20/12/2018 14:17

Wouldn't surprise me if its a false flag to introduce more drone 'regulation' - I.e a step to tax drone users. Some idiotic economist will have done the maths and worked out that the economic downside of shutting Gatwick for the day is less than the possible revenue of harassing drone users to stump up £500 quid for training and then a £100 license fee per annum for the next 50 years.

QforCucumber · 20/12/2018 14:20

Theory at work today is that it's something we are not being told too justaboy Seems all a bit too hush hush and unsure, lots of different suppositions though, tin foil hats etc.

StealthPolarBear · 20/12/2018 14:21

Kitten do we need to revisit the super soaker thread :)

PierreBezukov · 20/12/2018 14:27

Like others I'm surprised there is not more regulation around drones.

Hateful things. Can't stand them flying overhead me.

Anticlockwatcher · 20/12/2018 14:30

Why should there be more regulation? The drone code is quite enough.

Individuals can be irresponsible with pretty much anything. We don't need the nanny state making people who have hobbies and are responsible with it lives more annoying.

Catsandbootsandbootsandcats · 20/12/2018 14:32

Ooh conspiracy theories so close to me. If I could be bothered I'd go for a wander up there and see what's happening. But I'm still in my pyjamas, so no.

It's eerily quiet though. Living so close I'm used to the noise of the planes, but actually really notice when they're not there.

knittedmouse · 20/12/2018 14:36

It's probably Putin playing with an early xmas present. Military grade equipment, so we're not allowed to see it.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 20/12/2018 14:41

BBC reporting police saying drone is industrial and then another 'specialist' saying it is a toy drone Hmm.

Whatdoesitmatteranyway · 20/12/2018 15:11

To be fair I have flown many other time in the intervening years (10+ a year) its just everytime something like this happens, I seem to be affected

nauticant · 20/12/2018 15:14

Would it be possible for you to maintain a schedule of your future flight plans on MN so we can know what dates to avoid?

(I was also flying on 9/11 but luckily when the news broke rushed to the airport and got in the air before lockdown.)

arranbubonicplague · 20/12/2018 15:17

Hopefully there'll be none at the North Pole on the 24th.

Has no one blamed it on Brexit yet or did I miss that when scrolling Grin

@bigbluebus
It's been mentioned Grin

Yes... but they didn't call the dark money in the referendum an attack either did they?

I can't believe this is still an issue, and they are only just asking for mod help

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 20/12/2018 16:20

What form could MoD help take?

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 20/12/2018 16:25

There are plenty of people who don't follow (or don't know about) the existing rules around drones. I'm not sure that new rules would solve many problems.

I thought that newer drones couldn't be flown near airports though, although I guess it would be possible to override the software.
