To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

its only operating under darkness cover....so could be someone parked up near, rather via internet as was suggested

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2018 18:20

just catching up with the news. Bollocks. Poor everyone who is caught up in this.

Polarbearflavour · 21/12/2018 18:23

Can you imagine being staff on a customer service desk at Gatwick today. Urghhhhhhhhhh!

TidaQuel · 21/12/2018 18:25

Runway is open again now - I can hear flights taking off

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/12/2018 18:33

I really hope this is done by someone who lives locally to prove a point

What point would that be ... the one that they appear not to have noticed a ruddy great big airport when buying their homes?

If this had been a new facility suddenly opened next to them I could see the point, but as things stand it's like buying next to a motorway and complaining about road noise

Polarbearflavour · 21/12/2018 18:34

I have a friend who is BA cabin crew. She’s been “grounded” as she’s pregnant. Anyway, she’s been working at customer services in the terminal and had been subject to being shouted at, sworn at and one passenger said she’s ruined his holiday and he hopes her baby dies.

She’s going to her GP to get signed off work for the rest of her pregnancy. People can be vile.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2018 18:35

Hopefully it was a false alarm then.

TheLittlestLightOnTheTree · 21/12/2018 18:37

false alarm or a deliberate call to set things off again

HowlsMovingBungalow · 21/12/2018 18:40

That is utterly abhorrent Polar! I fucking despair with the human race.

HelenaDove · 21/12/2018 18:41

@Polarbearflavour Xmas Sad Xmas Angry there is NO EXCUSE for that!

For many people trying to get to see family , it could be their last Christmas. ITV News just interviewed a woman with stage 4 breast cancer She is taking liquid morphine while sleeping in the terminal The airline says they cant put her up in a hotel due to the scale of this.

i hope they find the utter cunt(s) who are causing this.

Polarbearflavour · 21/12/2018 18:43

She’s been in tears all day. You have to pretty horrible person to be that nasty to somebody. She was also worried that an aggressive passenger would kick her in the stomach. That’s how unpleasant things are at Gatwick today!

The customer service supervisor is also unhelpful and she’s not been allowed to sit down or drink water. So happy she is not going back to work there!

nicoala1 · 21/12/2018 18:49

It is very hard for those trying to get away or come home to see family. But honestly I travel hopefully to arrive!

I have been delayed so many times in different airports due to strikes and weather, and mechanical problems. Just get on with it. Shouting and giving it welly will not work.

In fact last year our flight was cancelled from Malaga due to French ATC issues. The Q to sort out accommodation etc was hours long. Myself and OH just shrugged and accepted it. What could we do?

When we got near the top of the Q behind the shouters in front and behind, we were called into a room by the ground staff. Given a five star hotel and transport to and fro. Lovely. They were actually watching and noticed we were quiet and ok. (not saints believe me, but what's the point in having a go with people who are doing their best).

A smile and acknowledgment of these people works wonders. Take note. They are human too.

nickiredcar · 21/12/2018 18:58

It's reopened now.

As they are allowing 24 hour flying to clear the backlog I hope all get away

Terfing · 21/12/2018 18:59

Honestly, if I had a flight planned from/ to there, I would suck up the cost and fly into somewhere else. You can't put a price on xmas.

HelenaDove · 21/12/2018 19:05

That customer service advisor owes her a duty of care.

user8526831517 · 21/12/2018 19:15

You can't put a price on Christmas no but if you don't have the money you don't have the money. We are missing seeing my dying father at Christmas because a flight is too expensive and we don't physically have the money.

Terfing · 21/12/2018 19:17

@user8526831517

I am so sorry about that. I hope you get to see him soon. Thanks

soberexpat · 21/12/2018 19:20

My parents just endured a 48 hour delay due to this. And they had to rebook their flights at the cost of 500 GBP (originals were just over 200).

I'm livid and sad for them.

nicoala1 · 21/12/2018 19:30

I do not mean to be judgmental at all.

But everyone should have a credit card with enough to get through emergencies whilst travelling.

Then claim from insurance (I don't know if this kind of drone thing is covered though).

There is no price on seeing loved ones if you can. It is only money not life or death.

And remember, every single person of more than 100k passengers have had to endure too.

brizzledrizzle · 21/12/2018 19:33

Not everybody can get a credit card. It's easy to say it is only money when you have plenty of it.

HelenaDove · 21/12/2018 19:35

Yeah cos people who fly easyjet have a Concorde budget Xmas Hmm

HowlsMovingBungalow · 21/12/2018 19:36

I don't think the insurance covers the drone distruption.

There are a lot of bastards making money from the desperate too, like the taxis yesterday charging £600 to transport customers to other airports , taxi firm in my region charges £160 Gatwick to Devon. Disgusting!

nicoala1 · 21/12/2018 19:36

Ah brizzle. Sorry if I offended you or anyone.

Just saying that an emergency supply of cash or means to pay for something in an emergency is a good thing.

Do people actually travel without any means to support themselves in a crisis abroad?

Dowser · 21/12/2018 19:38

Three or four years ago we stayed at the holiday in alongside inglisto airport...I was shocked at how close we could get to the runway..anyone could’ve lobbed anything at a plane.
