To wonder about a few things with the LGW drone attack

Before I get flamed (and not that anyone will resist flaming if they want to anyway). I know-

-It's not that easy
-Safety First
-People are doing their best

But I can't help wondering and idly speculating about why -

We apparently don't have any counter measures for this.
It can go on so long
We aren't seeing any News footage of the drone(s)

I am 100% NOT a conspiracy theorist but I am very curious about exactly what is going on.

The drone(s) are probably programmed to fly at particular intervals for a short space of time , they will be appearing randomly and not for long enough to track them down ( they arent hobby drones )

Shooting at them runs the risk of random bullets ( or whatever they will use ) killing or injuring innocent bystanders ...If they miss the targets they just carry on for a fair distance

A pidgeon being sucked into an engine can be catostrophic so imagine what a drone could do

There has been footage of the drone shown

Recent posts include a likely contender for the hotly-contested 'most inaccurate caricature of the year' award.

Well this escalated!

Feminism isn't about "equality" though. Commonly held misperception.

FairfaxAikman · 21/12/2018 12:55

The Register has a pretty good breakdown of my they can't shoot at drones. Written by a hobby shooter.

Women have the capacity to be corrupt and malign just as men do
these capacities appear to manifest far less often in women than they doing then, perhaps they also manifest in ways which are more subtle or covert
I would suggest that culture in large part shapes the way that we express our capacities

ErrolTheDragon · 21/12/2018 12:57

What they need, obviously, is an enormous fly swat or butterfly net.

powershowerforanhour · 21/12/2018 13:06

If a drone was over clear airfield I wonder why they can't have a go at flying a kamikaze drone into it. That might have a better chance of either killing it or missing it entirely than a shotgun "injuring" it so that it crashes elsewhere.

AutumnCrow · 21/12/2018 13:06

I was thinking of offering to suck up the drone using the power of my massive feminist cats-bum mouth but realised it was already sucking too many lemons. Or something.

Gatwick to 'return to normal tomorrow night' - BBC news just now.

powershowerforanhour · 21/12/2018 13:07

But Errol's butterfly net idea is better ☺

Did anyone ever say why another drone (or couple of drones) couldn’t have been flown up to follow the ‘bad’ drone when it landed?

The Police have drones as do the Army and I’m pretty sure the Police outsource some drone flying to outside companies so it’s not like they don’t have experienced drone pilots on hand.

Terfing · 21/12/2018 13:33

Wow! This thread turned mental!

I think we scared the drones off!

nicoala1 · 21/12/2018 13:40

It is all a cover up for some nefarious plot. D notice I suspect too. Just minimal reporting. Drones my ass.

There is more going on behind the scenes than we will ever know about. Just saying. And it took the heat off Brexit in time for them all to go on their holidays too.

Just made another tin foil hat there, in case you are wondering!

InsomniacAnonymous · 21/12/2018 14:16

I think I know who may be behind this. Information recently received:-

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/12/2018 14:32

Gatwick covers an area of almost 9 square km. To think that yesterday they could have managed to spot a drone that was up for perhaps 10-20 minutes and get their own drones into a position to crash into it or follow it shows a lack of understanding of the scale of one small drone compared to such a big area.

Yes, it's totally bizarre that there are no anti drone measures at Gatwick, but I'm not surprised that it took time to respond given how inadequately prepared they appeared to be.

Yesterday I was asking the question 'why Gatwick rather than Heathrow?' It turns out that for some unfathomable reason Heathrow has anti drone measures and Gatwick doesn't. Whoever orchestrated this clearly knew that and knew that once the army was called in, the 'game' was up - or at least the measures put in place are now adequate to prevent drones from flying in, given the activity stopped after that announcement.

Softpebbles · 21/12/2018 14:54

There are anti drone measures. Some prisons have them, it’s effectively an invisible sky fence.

Which jams aircraft electronics too .....

powershowerforanhour · 21/12/2018 15:28

Fair enough it's probably not cost effective to hire drone pilots to take shifts sitting on standby in the airport to scramble in a car and launch their own drones at the site within a few minutes.

Softpebbles · 21/12/2018 15:49

Not necessarily Ta1k.

nickiredcar · 21/12/2018 15:57

If they are on a pre programmed route then blocking the signal from the handset won't do much will it?

user1471439240 · 21/12/2018 16:06

The drone/s were likely preprogrammed, hence the delay in stopping the event.
Although preprogrammed they rely on gps to navigate/ no where they are.
A company very specialised in anti drone measures are now in place at the perimeter, this equipment contains gps spoofing functionality to neutralise this form of attack.

Ta1kinpeace · 21/12/2018 16:10

softpebbles
Do you fly drones? Do you understand the channel hopping capabilities of the standard frequency and what else it is used for? Have you programmed routes and options into a drone? Have you ever lost sight of a drone and waited for it to auto land?

I'll guess that there were no more than three drones and two blokes operating them out of a moving car.

nicoala1 · 21/12/2018 16:21

IF and only IF it was a collection of drones, surely the word is out, and this will be replicated elsewhere now very easily.

Honestly WTAF took the security services nearly three days to sort this out?

I am not convinced it was just a series of drones either. Tin foil hat on.

Softpebbles · 21/12/2018 16:32

No Ta1k I haven’t flown a drone.

However I do understand there is possibly the technology that wouldn’t interfere with aircraft. Look up drone defence. I could be wrong but it’s not what their website says. He was also featured a lot on the radio yesterday.

I do have experience of where this system is used. 😊

Spaghettibol · 21/12/2018 16:32

Anyone seen the new YouTuber video gone up??? 🙈 it’s called
