To regret buying a cordless Dyson

I bought a new Dyson V7 cordless vacuum recently. According to the instructions it only lasts for 20 minutes' worth of vacuuming (or just six minutes on max mode!) before needing a charge, which takes 3.5 hours. I admit I did know this information before I bought it, but I think I was "sucked in" (no pun intended) by the look of it, the convenience of not having a cord, new technology etc.

Now it's arrived and while it is very easy to scoot around with, I'm thinking that 20 minutes just doesn't sound long enough to do a full vacuum of the house - and I imagine that charging it every time after use will be a PITA as well. The drum, where the dirt collects, is tiny and will therefore need emptying on a very regular basis, unlike my old Dyson which had a large cylinder and collected loads of dirt before emptying.

You have to hold down the on button while vacuuming - which isn't too much of an issue I suppose as it's where your finger would naturally rest anyway. The instructions also suggest mounting a docking station on your wall, which I'd rather not do, but it doesn't stand upright in the cupboard otherwise.

I'm now wanting to vacuum my kitchen floor but am unable to as it's only one hour into the 3.5 hour charge.

Does anyone else have one of these vacuums and AIBU to regret buying one? It does have great reviews online so I'm hoping I will grow to love it...

You’re welcome Thyme. Grin
I’m the same with diagrams, I only know because DP told me how to do it after several weeks of me thinking it was rubbish because it only lasted ten minutes.

V10 came this morning and I love it. 😀 I hoovered my rug yesterday with the V8 before I broke it and today I hoovered a tiny square of the same rug with the V10 before putting it on charge and it sucked loads of stuff up. Blush it has 3 settings rather than 2 and came with the switch set on the medium setting. Does anyone know whether the low or the medium setting is the same as the low setting on the v8?

The people that have the cordless Dyson and don’t have a problem with suction, have you not found problems with sucking up a leaf?

I know this sounds ridiculous but if I try and such up a leaf about the same size as an oak leaf it gets stuck in the round hole in the middle of the head and won’t suck up anything after until I realise it’s completely clogged the head and I have to get a knife in at it.

Absolutely hate mine

SoupDragon · 21/12/2018 13:47

This pissed me off SO much with my Corded Dyson Animal! There was a stupid rubber flap in the head that meant you couldn't suck up anything bigger than dust. Bits of paper would stick on it and then clog the whole thing. Truly shit design.

AlexaAmbidextra · 21/12/2018 15:49

Truly shit design

Imo, much that Dyson produces is of a truly shit design but he seems to keep getting away with it on a massive scale Confused

I've just revisited this thread to find I've had 150 replies - wow!

Quick update: I think I may have had a Damascene conversion.

I've been using the Dyson today after fully charging it and it's been brilliant - it's so easy to manoeuvre around corners, so light to hold compared with my previous hoover and I love seeing all the dirt it's sucked up in the clear drum - it's so satisfying.

As a PP said, 20 minutes is actually a lot longer than you think when it comes to vacuuming - I tend to do a couple of rooms at a time rather than the whole house at once anyway, and it's perfect for that.

I also think the suction is seriously good - it's a lot more powerful than my old vac. I can see that using it to clean the stairs is going to be an absolute joy.

I'd say the only thing I don't like about it is that I have had to use my fingers to pull out long hairs that were trapped in the drum when emptying.

Other than that - 10/10!

What a turn around 😂
Have u been contacted by dyson?

Haha no - I think I just posted too quickly in the first instance as I'd only used it on 20% charge (which it comes with) and it conked out after about four minutes, which was a bit disconcerting. I was also surprised to find the ugly wall mount thing in the box, as I didn't realise that it didn't stand up of its own accord.

Agree although it's handy for a quick clean unless you change the end it gets no where near the sides of the floor. I spend so much time emptying the thing I may as well have put up with a plug in Hoover.

Bigonesmallone3 · 21/12/2018 19:29

I'm glad ur converted I love mine!

safariboot · 21/12/2018 19:46

We've got an older one as our only vacuum. Despite the drawbacks of the short run time, and worse the tiny bin, we're broadly happy with it. Most corded uprights are just so heavy and our stairs are awful. The cordless Dyson is light and manageable.

Crimson72 · 23/12/2018 14:46

I’ve just done a massive (and long overdue) vacuum of the upstairs of my house and the head now has a load of hair and fluff twisted round it - bleugh! How do you remove it?

Crimson on the side of the head there's a round disc with a notch cut out of it. If you put a coin or keyring loop in it and twist the whole brush roll comes out. Cut and unwind the hair, it's my favourite thing about the dyson.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 23/12/2018 17:14

A regular clean-out of the roller brush is essential - we foiund that out when it started doing that stop-start thing, which is generally an indicator for something being clogged up.
So, a quick twist of that disc, take off the flap, clear out all the long hairs & threads and stuff, good to go as strong as before!

Rafflesway · 23/12/2018 17:49

For anyone thinking of a Shark, I have the new duo clean cordless liftaway. It is fantastic for either quick clean around or deep clean.

Genuine 50 minute charge, not heavy, simple to empty and clean filters, great range of tools which come with their own little Shark bag. Stands upright on its own and no need to attach to wall/docking station. I do a quick clean up daily and a really deep clean once per week and only need to charge twice weekly. No clogging issues. I absolutely love it!
Had it 2 months now and wouldnt be without it

Rach000 · 23/12/2018 18:33

I love my cordless dyson. I can do the whole house on one charge for a standard clean. But I do tend to vac more often now as it's so quick and easy to get it out to do one room or something. I have 2 young kids so always got crumbs somewhere so use it most days in the kitchen and living room. I use a knife to help pull out all the dust which helps, not a sharp knife.

Crimson72 · 23/12/2018 18:58

Thanks for the info - I will have a look at it tomorrow. I can’t believe how much shed hair there is in this house - it’s absolutely grim but also strangely satisfying that the Dyson picked all of that up!

I have a shark cordless and I
I love it BUT, I spent £50+ on a spare battery. When the battery in the vacuum runs out (approx 15 mins), I put it on to charge and put in the spare one ( which is always left in the same place after it has fully charged)

I rarely use a full battery in one go though. I would say I can do the whole house on one charge with a bit left over.
