To regret buying a cordless Dyson

I bought a new Dyson V7 cordless vacuum recently. According to the instructions it only lasts for 20 minutes' worth of vacuuming (or just six minutes on max mode!) before needing a charge, which takes 3.5 hours. I admit I did know this information before I bought it, but I think I was "sucked in" (no pun intended) by the look of it, the convenience of not having a cord, new technology etc.

Now it's arrived and while it is very easy to scoot around with, I'm thinking that 20 minutes just doesn't sound long enough to do a full vacuum of the house - and I imagine that charging it every time after use will be a PITA as well. The drum, where the dirt collects, is tiny and will therefore need emptying on a very regular basis, unlike my old Dyson which had a large cylinder and collected loads of dirt before emptying.

You have to hold down the on button while vacuuming - which isn't too much of an issue I suppose as it's where your finger would naturally rest anyway. The instructions also suggest mounting a docking station on your wall, which I'd rather not do, but it doesn't stand upright in the cupboard otherwise.

I'm now wanting to vacuum my kitchen floor but am unable to as it's only one hour into the 3.5 hour charge.

Does anyone else have one of these vacuums and AIBU to regret buying one? It does have great reviews online so I'm hoping I will grow to love it...

I absolutely love my cordless vacuum! We have a 4 bedroom house and I can easily do it on a full charge. It makes vacuuming enjoyable!

Notthemessiah · 19/12/2018 15:59

I have the same Dyson handheld and a Miele cylinder. The Dyson is great for small jobs, stairs and surfaces but the Miele still gets used more I would say as the Dyson is slower to use on large areas and it does tend to run out of battery on bigger jobs.

Quite glad I have both though.

Sexnotgender · 19/12/2018 16:01

I have one and love it. It lives downstairs for running round pretty much daily.

My regular dyson upright lives upstairs.

jenniuol · 19/12/2018 16:04

I absolutely love mine! Got a v8 in the Black Friday sale and wouldn’t be without it now. I can do the whole house on one charge, although just 3 bed semi tbf. Great for stairs, the car too. We wall mounted it so it’s always ready to go.

Cherries101 · 19/12/2018 16:05

I have a 3 bed detached and can vacuum my entire house (including changeing the heads) on a Dyson V10 cordless in 15 mins. There is no need to ‘double back’ with the cordless, one swipe will clean flooring and carpets perfectly. So much so I got rid of the main vacuum. Also, while I don’t have pets my hair sheds a lot (I have diffuse alpecia) and we NEVER have hairballs or ground in hair or even dust really.

lilyblue5 · 19/12/2018 16:06

I love mine so much I’ve got rid of my ‘proper’ hoover. 20 mins is a lot, just down hold the button down walking from room to room or repeating but if you have a big house.
If my battery does run out usually only a 5 min charge is needed before I can finish off a room.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 19/12/2018 16:08

I ended up with 2. One for upstairs and one for down cos of this.

Still use Henry cos he kicks the Dysons arse!

lilyblue5 · 19/12/2018 16:08

*just don’t

RudolfIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/12/2018 16:10

I looooooooove mine, and can do the whole house on one charge, with the odd blast of max charge when needed. It's a small house - but it does have a long-haired cat's fur to contend with too.

SushiMonster · 19/12/2018 16:10

Yeah the idea isn't that you do a whole house clean with it - you d oa quick wizz round a room when you have a second.

I think it works best if you already have another real hoover.

eggsandwich · 19/12/2018 16:12

A Dyson service engineer tried to convince me to get one when he was replacing a part on an old Dyson that we only use to hoover the car out with.

He had a V7 cordless in his van and said to me give this a try you’ll never buy another hoover, sadly for him after trying it out I wasn’t very impressed and did tell him that its not as good as my Henry and the battery charge is not long enough, he had quite a few in his van obviously trying to flog them.

We have a Dyson DC01 which is still going strong after 20 years, and we bought a cordless V6 with the idea of keeping one upstairs and one downstairs, but in practice the cordless is often being used in preference to the DC01. Battery lifespan is not a problem because we tend to clean 1-2 rooms a day rather than all in one go, and the ease of picking it up to go means we're cleaning more frequently. Only time I've run it down completely is doing my father's entire house.

MayFayner · 19/12/2018 16:16

I love mine. My only regret is not getting one sooner. Yes it can get clogged but I’ve been able to fix it any time that’s happened.

I’ll buy another one straight away if this one dies.

HidingFromMyKids · 19/12/2018 16:16

I have a v7 and I love it. So much easier than lugging a heavy vac up the stairs especially as I'm 35 weeks pregnant. I find it so convenient and it picks up all sorts from different surfaces.

If it has been on charge for an hour you really could just take it off and whizz round your kitchen. There is no need to wait for it to be fully charged.

PuppyMonkey · 19/12/2018 16:18

I have a V6 and we have a love/hate relationship with each other.

I love the convenience of it and doing a quick vacuum of the kitchen and hall etc.

I love that it’s nice and sucky.

I hate having to unscrew the bits and clean the sodding head out every couple of goes because something is blocking the hose and it just stops working if you don’t sort it.

We’ve also had to have two replacement heads sent out in two years because the rotating thing just randomly stopped working.

I hate that the sodding bin is a pain to clean and you always have to run a knife around it.

It’s a nice product but it’s just soooooo needy.Grin

larry55 · 19/12/2018 16:19

Dh has got me a v6 animal for Christmas (before you all say Ltb I asked for it) and I also have a dyson upright. I wanted one because I find the upright too heavy. I have used it to do the stairs and even though I had brushed the stairs recently I was amazed at how much came out.

We have put the charger in the utility room so it is on charge all the time it is not in use.

EffOrf · 19/12/2018 16:20

I have a cordless Dyson , the cheapest one which cost me £160 last year and I love it, it lives upstairs on the wall in the spare room , I just leave it on charge and it’s fine for day to day vacuuming. I still have my upright Dyson which I use if I need to do a big clean and was also useful when the carpet was new as there was a lot of fluff for a couple of weeks and I don’t think the cordless would have coped with the quantity of fluff

KatharinaRosalie · 19/12/2018 16:21

The bin has been improved on the V8 model if you are thinking of an upgrade. Opens differently so everything falls out without any poking needed.

costacoffeecup · 19/12/2018 16:22

It's really fiddly and annoying to empty and we have a stand off on our house about who does it (DP always puts it back full, grr!) Apart from that it's good I think.

YesitsJacqueline · 19/12/2018 16:22

I felt like I had bought the world's most expensive carpet sweeper. However, 20 mins is longer than you think and the stairs are a much easier job.
Henry is still my man though and I get him out for a thorough vacuum with the attachments etc

missbattenburg · 19/12/2018 16:23

I have the V8 animal and love it. It lasts about 7 mins on max and I could do the whole house (4 bed) in that time if I put my mind to it. 20 mins on normal power and I could do the whole place 3 times.

1 long haired dog and 2 short haired, moult-like-crazy dogs here so it gets used daily. Its battery did fail but Dyson sent another for free and it was easy enough to switch them out.

EffOrf · 19/12/2018 16:25

Yes the poking the bin out is a pain, glad that they have sorted that now, though hoping my V6 lasts for a few years yet. There are only 2 adults and no children or pets which I think helps as probably not so much dirt to suck up

Gilles27 · 19/12/2018 16:26

@reallyanotherone It sounds like the filter needs cleaning. If it is cutting out all the time and works when you lift the filter up that is the problem. Pull the filter out and give it a good rinse under the tap. Let the filter dry overnight and then put it back in. I think you'll find it works better then.

We have 2 cordless Dyson's as my MIL moved in a few months ago and brought one with her. We have one for upstairs and one for downstairs and have got rid of our 'normal' vacuum, which was also a Dyson, as we never use it. DH does the maintenance on them when needed - cleaning filter or removing hair etc from the spinny bit that touches the floor.

We have also found Dyson to have amazing customer service. You don't need to have kept the receipt or box etc. Just ring them if you have any problems. They will talk you through how to fix it, or post you parts for free if required. I think this is only for the first 2 years, but we have been impressed with them.

Bigonesmallone3 · 19/12/2018 16:26

I have the v8 and it's brilliant!
I have my mount inside a cupboard upstairs as didn't want it on display..
