To regret buying a cordless Dyson

I bought a new Dyson V7 cordless vacuum recently. According to the instructions it only lasts for 20 minutes' worth of vacuuming (or just six minutes on max mode!) before needing a charge, which takes 3.5 hours. I admit I did know this information before I bought it, but I think I was "sucked in" (no pun intended) by the look of it, the convenience of not having a cord, new technology etc.

Now it's arrived and while it is very easy to scoot around with, I'm thinking that 20 minutes just doesn't sound long enough to do a full vacuum of the house - and I imagine that charging it every time after use will be a PITA as well. The drum, where the dirt collects, is tiny and will therefore need emptying on a very regular basis, unlike my old Dyson which had a large cylinder and collected loads of dirt before emptying.

You have to hold down the on button while vacuuming - which isn't too much of an issue I suppose as it's where your finger would naturally rest anyway. The instructions also suggest mounting a docking station on your wall, which I'd rather not do, but it doesn't stand upright in the cupboard otherwise.

I'm now wanting to vacuum my kitchen floor but am unable to as it's only one hour into the 3.5 hour charge.

Does anyone else have one of these vacuums and AIBU to regret buying one? It does have great reviews online so I'm hoping I will grow to love it...

I pretty much use the cordless Dyson all the while and find it fine for the general cleaning. Anyone getting one though I would advise to keep your old plug in vacuum as we needed ours when we had a new carpet as there was loads of fluff and would also use it if we had any big cleaning jobs like when doing DIY.

So now we have a very old orange vax in the garage for outside jobs, an old Dyson upright for jobs the handheld may not cope with and also a Miele in the attic which was DMs which we claimed when clearing her house and can replace any of the others when they die.

Another issue I have with the V6 Animal is that the cylinder seems so bloody fragile. It doesn't open all that easily, it always feels like something's about to snap off.

Will definitely take a PP's advice and try some demo models out in Currys before buying next time!

BishopBrennansArse · 20/12/2018 09:55

Hence why I went for the corded shark.

llangennith · 20/12/2018 10:01

Dysons come with an easy to follow instruction manual showing how you can take it all apart to clean it thoroughly, telling you how and when to wash the filters. If you follow the advice you won't have any suction or other problems with your cordless Dyson.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 20/12/2018 10:04

I have the v10 and so far it's never run out of power mid way through anything !

Sticklebrook · 20/12/2018 10:06

This vacuum needs to be used differently. No more vacuuming the whole house in one go, they are more like the stairs need doing then back on charge, there are bits on the sofa then back on charge, living room then back on charge etc.

nessus · 20/12/2018 10:38

Super timely thread as looking to replace old corded dyson and can't be doing with another. Seems like Henry trumps Miele as preferred buy!

peachgreen · 20/12/2018 12:45

I love mine. I have a V6 and it works perfectly. If it starts cutting out or the suction isn't as good as usual it's because the filter needs a good wash and thoroughly dried - I find it has to be done maybe once a year. I also have a DC01 which works like the day it was bought despite being 20 years old.

I would probably get a Shark if I was buying one new though.

SoupDragon · 20/12/2018 13:09

What I like about my cordless Shark is that the battery comes out for charging so I have one on the charging dock and one in the vacuum. It's always readily available and good to go. It also folds in half so is really small to store.

Thymeout · 20/12/2018 13:15

Does anyone know how to change the setting? The button on mine seems to be stuck on full power.

It's good for stairs and the car, but mainly I use it as an electric dust pan. Use a broom for sweeping laminates then hoover up the pile of dust. Not worth the money.

Poster65 · 20/12/2018 13:47

Another Shark vote, here. I loved my Dyson, I believed they were the best out there.
It was laughable when I replaced it!

PuppyMonkey · 20/12/2018 13:55

Thymeout, for my Dyson, you need to press the power button while it’s running to get it off max power setting.

Honestlyofficer · 20/12/2018 14:03

I love mine. I have hairy dogs and messy kids, and it means that in 10 mins I can turn the downstairs from a place of carnage to a much cleaner place of carnage. I can hoover up dog hair before it forms tumbleweeds and de-crumb the sofa in seconds. It's wall mounted and permanently charged. I would stress that we also have a big dyson plug in, that does the whole house weekly, but the little one is a godsend and used daily.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 20/12/2018 19:01

I love mine. We have it wall mounted though and I have a lot of stairs so it's perfect for that. It does sometimes run out while I'm using it, but not enough to annoy me. I can't remember ever wanting to vacuum the whole house at the same time though. I tend to empty it whenever I use it, but it's easy to do.

MustBeThin · 20/12/2018 19:42

I've just ordered the V10 absolute after dropping and breaking my V8 absolute. I loved my V8 I have 3 long hair dogs and I've never had a problem with my hoover clogging or cutting out. I've never run out of battery either. I hoover way more since getting a cordless, it used to be a PITA dragging the big dyson out especially to hoover the stairs. Another thing I like about the dyson is the fact that you can remover the brush bar to untangle hair, my hair is very long and it was a nightmare trying to remove it from my old hoovers.

TurquoiseDress · 21/12/2018 09:17

I have no experience of a Dyson, but am in the process of trying to convince DH to agree to buying one!

This is really helpful information & opinion on Dysons

Inforthelonghaul · 21/12/2018 09:23

I have a v8 and love it, will get a V10 when funds allow. I can vacuum all the floors in my 4 bed house and do a bit of dusting in one go. It replaced my big vacuum completely, the secret is that because it’s so easy I vacuum every day rather than once a week. The bin fills every other day or so believe it or not (we have pets) but is dead easy to empty.

Juells · 21/12/2018 09:24

HRTFT. I bought an AEG cordless a couple of years ago and really like it. Any Dysons I've tried seem to be a bit unbalanced, with the weight up at the top. The AEG gives an hour of vacuuming on 'normal'. I hate vacuuming, and love being able to just grab the AEG and whizz around when I see drifts of dog-hair Grin which happens about three times a day. My sister bought another version of the AEG cordless which incorporates a dustbuster for the stairs, and loves it.

I have a thing in my nose against Dyson anyway, since he's so pro-Brexit whilst moving his manufacturing to Malaysia.

averythinline · 21/12/2018 09:25

I'm in the Dyson are rubbish camp - noisy, poor at picking stuff up..had one never again.....my mum is a sucker for their design so has had teh fans as well (great but only last a couple of years when £400) over priced overhyped poor quality....she swopped to an AEG (i think) cordless and it is so much better

DeepanKrispanEven · 21/12/2018 09:26

We had a Dyson a couple of years ago which was a total waste of money. Never again.

ChampooPapi · 21/12/2018 09:32

Just to warn you to keep your 2 year guarantee handy as the batteries often only last 2 years (ours was thankfully 18 mnoths so we got a free one sent out last week as we were just within the guarantee period).

New batteries cost 65 pounds so worth keeping that guarantee handy. By 18 months we were only getting 5 minutes out of it as they get weaker over time. They are fab, but you definitely need a wall plugged vacuum like a Vax for bigger cleans/carpets

ChampooPapi · 21/12/2018 09:37

Also the point of it is that you do attach it to the wall, that's part of the reason to buy it surly? so its easy to access and quick to hoover up crumbs ect, It really sounds like you brought something that you don't actually want to be honest

AnnabelC · 21/12/2018 09:41

I’ve had the Dyson cordless. It’s was rubbish and battery went after 2 years. Now have the Shark. It’s brilliant. 2 batteries and good suction.

SoupDragon · 21/12/2018 10:30

You don't have to attach the Shark to the wall which was a plus for me. Also, as it folds in half it's made finding a storage nook very easy.

Thymeout · 21/12/2018 12:04

Puppymonkey Flowers

Thankyou!!! This is my second Dyson cordless and I can't believe I haven't worked it out before. Which leads me to a second complaint. The instructions are crap. No words, just drawings - and I'm a word person.
