To regret buying a cordless Dyson

I bought a new Dyson V7 cordless vacuum recently. According to the instructions it only lasts for 20 minutes' worth of vacuuming (or just six minutes on max mode!) before needing a charge, which takes 3.5 hours. I admit I did know this information before I bought it, but I think I was "sucked in" (no pun intended) by the look of it, the convenience of not having a cord, new technology etc.

Now it's arrived and while it is very easy to scoot around with, I'm thinking that 20 minutes just doesn't sound long enough to do a full vacuum of the house - and I imagine that charging it every time after use will be a PITA as well. The drum, where the dirt collects, is tiny and will therefore need emptying on a very regular basis, unlike my old Dyson which had a large cylinder and collected loads of dirt before emptying.

You have to hold down the on button while vacuuming - which isn't too much of an issue I suppose as it's where your finger would naturally rest anyway. The instructions also suggest mounting a docking station on your wall, which I'd rather not do, but it doesn't stand upright in the cupboard otherwise.

I'm now wanting to vacuum my kitchen floor but am unable to as it's only one hour into the 3.5 hour charge.

Does anyone else have one of these vacuums and AIBU to regret buying one? It does have great reviews online so I'm hoping I will grow to love it...

DH decided to get one (in addition to a normal meile) - I don't know which model it is. I essentially use it as a DustBuster that actually works.

ForalltheSaints · 19/12/2018 18:39

I decided not to get a Dyson and can now be smug after reading this thread.

Smithy01 · 19/12/2018 18:44

There hit and miss you can get one and it’s brilliant (my mum’s is) Mine on the hand is rubbish (same model) I’ve had more replacement parts for it than I can remember and it isn’t a patch on my normal Dyson. Wouldn’t recommend taking the chance on one for the money.

WinterfellWench · 19/12/2018 18:48

I would have been pissed off. 20 minutes on a 3.5 hours charge? WTF why??? Confused

No way on EARTH could I get round my house in 20 minutes. Not if I were to do it properly. That would take me around my lounge, dining room, and hall only.

I do the furniture and behind the couch and armchairs once a month too, and take 20 minutes for the lounge alone then.

Raera · 19/12/2018 18:54

I love it except the finger on the button thing already mentioned, ours is the 40 minute type.
Best thing is my DGS age 6 thinks it's a treat if he's allowed to use it! So for 40 minutes he's' occupied, happy and I get clean carpets!

ShockedHorrored · 19/12/2018 18:54

I love my v10. It’s amazeballs. Yes I just said amazeballs.

PrettyLovely · 19/12/2018 18:55

Biggest pile of crap I have ever bought, So messy to empty and the suction was crap.

Limensoda · 19/12/2018 18:57

I love mine. The first time I charged it when new took 3 hours but it doesn't take that long now.
I always manage to vacuum every floor in my house and still have charge left. I'd never go back to a heavy, cord vacuum again.

PickAChew · 19/12/2018 18:58

I have an older model and it's only any good for spot cleaning and that tricky bend on my stairs that I can't quite reach from above or below.

StayAChild · 19/12/2018 19:02

DH and I are looking into buying a Shark, which I really hope is more efficient!

Don't get the Shark flex duo. I hate it. You need a degree in engineering to put tools on and remove the wand. It doesn't stand up on its own without doubling the flex part over which is a pain when you need to move any furniture and it goes where it wants to. It lasts about 20 minutes - just long enough to do the stairs and 3 out of 4 bedrooms. I have taken chunks out of the wooden furniture and skirtings due to it's poor manoeuvrability. It's not powerful enough to do a proper clean. It won't pick up bits from socks even on the powerful setting. Very disappointing. The reviews for it were excellent. Confused

I already had a Gtech original and have since bought the Gtech hand held for the stairs which seems more powerful.

seven201 · 19/12/2018 19:08

I love mine. Can do our 3 bed house just fine. Can't do full spring clean every surface in one go though.

You say you've only been charging for an hour and want to do the kitchen floor. You could easily do the kitchen floor after 1 hour of charging!

You've made me want to get off the sofa and hoover my stairs now!

I have the animal version and it’s been relegated to the garage as I hate it. We were given a cat blade 32v and even though it looks very similar for some reason it’s much better.

I have a black Labrador and the filter doesn’t get blocked up by his hair and it picks up fab from the light coloured carpets.

I still use my Miele cat and dog most of the time
Though and just use the cordless one for a quick run around.

LuaDipa · 19/12/2018 19:21

I’ve got one. It’s great for quick clean ups, stairs, ceilings and upholstery and the car. It’s not my main hoover though and when I recently sent my Miele off for service I struggled to manage with just that. The 20 min charge just wasn’t enough to do the whole house and I missed my ‘proper’ vacuum cleaner. I still wouldn’t be without the handheld though and I do find I use it most days.

Dodie66 · 19/12/2018 19:28

I do the whole house onone charge. It’s a 3 bed house. No problem

Hellomumsne · 19/12/2018 19:40

I love love love mine! Smile I have a small flat with stairs and no space for an actual hoover. I love how easy it is to have a quick skoot around for bits that need doing or to run up and down the stairs without the stress of finding extension cables. The charging doesnt bother me. I just make sure to plug it in for a few hours after and then it squeezes into the teeny space in the cupboard. Perfect!

blondeemily · 19/12/2018 19:50

I regret our Dyson. It's great having a cordless but it really wasn't worth the money in my opinion. Suction isn't great on hard floors - it just pushes mess around sometimes. If you make the mistake of standing it against the wall, it just falls down and then the drum bursts open and spills the contents all over the floor. I'm constantly having to clean it out where hair and debris gets trapped so it just stops working. Safe to say I won't be recommending!

cyantist · 19/12/2018 20:17

Our v7 lasts longer than 20 mins. One charge is more than enough to do the entire (4 bed) house.

But I find I don't often do the whole house in one go because it's so quick and easy to spot clean or do a single room.

I love it. Definitely worth the money in my opinion.

Ruddle91 · 19/12/2018 21:27

@Cherries101

I don't. I have a corded shark currently that does the entire downstairs plus the stairs from one socket in the hall. It makes no difference having a cord in my house - I had a Dyson cordless - I do the same route. If anything a cord is more convenient as I can unplug move cord up the stairs and do all of the upstairs including hoovering mattresses. I have allergies and lung disease - isn't a choice to be overly thorough but a necessity. A "daily quick hoover" maybe I could do - but not a proper clean.

I move the sofas, get under drawers, quickly run over the sofa, under the tv unit etc etc every time I vacuum - it simply isn't possible to do that on the 20 minute battery life of the Dyson lower model which we had which was actually much lower. My mum has my Dyson now and it needs the turbo mode to actually pick up dog hair properly. Maybe when the shark dies we will reevaluate and get a cordless but for now, not a chance.

BlitheringIdiots · 19/12/2018 21:29

Our Shark corded with quick release drum for doing stairs is awesome.

mrsjackrussell · 19/12/2018 21:35

Love my dyson. Just hoover round everywhere quickly every day. If it runs out before I get to an area I just start there the following day.
No problems with suction or emptying. It's just easy.

straightjeans · 19/12/2018 21:38

Dyson seem to focus more on aesthetic than actual usefulness in my opinion.

flintfoxy · 19/12/2018 21:43

I Fucking hate my cordless dyson biggest piece of shit ever

Prometheus · 19/12/2018 21:44

I gave a V7. Basically it is used for spills, quick hoovering of crumbs and the stairs. You'll need a normal hoover if you want to do your whole house. Plus the suction is pretty rubbish I'm afraid.

Didiplanthis · 19/12/2018 21:46

I love my v8. It's loads better than our old v6 which kept blocking. I have degenerative back problems and I means I can stay on top of things a bit more.
