To be upset that DH has started using e-cig when he had lung cancer 2 years ago and has never smoked before

waitingforbaby2 · 18/12/2018 20:52

DH asked me to grab something from the car so I went to look and found empty liquid bottle boxes in the car for a e cig so I asked him and he said he started yesterday but I felt like he hid it from me as he knew I wouldn't approve, I've been sat here crying about it is that stupid am I worried for no reason

I'd be worried about why he felt the need to hide it. How many empty liquid bottles did you find? Did he really only start yesterday?

Readysteadygoat · 18/12/2018 20:55

Why would anyone start using an e cig if they've never smoked before? I don't get it

YANBU sorry OP

HollyGoLoudly1 · 18/12/2018 20:57

YANBU. If you found multiple empty bottles then he can't have just started yesterday I'm afraid.

Wonderbag · 18/12/2018 21:22

I think he might have smoked, but hid it. And he's really trying not to now.
Otherwise it doesn't make sense.

HestiaParthenos · 18/12/2018 23:52

Would be my suspicion, too.

People are stupid, but to start smoking after having lung cancer? Unlikely.

Fairenuff · 18/12/2018 23:53

If he really never smoked before I would say it belonged to someone else and he is lying to cover up. I would wonder why.

waitingforbaby2 · 19/12/2018 08:31

Thanks for everyone's response it makes me feel like I didn't overreact, I do believe he only started on Monday as he then showed me all the full liquid bottles except one which had about a quarter gone as said he took them out of the boxes so they would fit in glove compartment, he has been having a stressful time at work lately so said it was to help him destress but he promised me he will only buy the liquid with less nicotine in and I'm 99% sure he wasn't a smoker before this so I still find it strange but like I said to him it's his life I'm not happy about it but I will have to get used to it and I stated I worried about his health

This is so unbelievably stupid. I would be very very angry - the long term effects of vaping are unknown - but inhaling nicotine / oils into the lungs is unlikely to have zero long term issues.

For somebody who has survived lung cancer to do so... words actually fail me.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 19/12/2018 09:43

I can actually understand this. My dad started smoking cigars when he got the all clear from his first cancer. We managed to talk him in to stopping, but when he got cancer again ten years later, I knew before he told me because I saw him smoking a cigar at a wedding.

RandomObject · 19/12/2018 09:47

Nicotine increases your stress levels long term. It gives temporary relief, but if that is why he is doing it he is going to make his problem worse.

CountessVonBoobs · 19/12/2018 09:53

Sorry, but I really really have a hard time believing that somebody who has never actually smoked would start vaping to deal with a hard time. Nicotine doesn't reduce stress other than in a smoker who's already addicted. And although non smokers do get lung cancer, the combination of having had cancer and vaping now says that he at one point was a habitual smoker, and has probably been vaping for some time. I think he's lying to you.

CountessVonBoobs · 19/12/2018 09:56

What was his prognosis re the cancer? Is he in remission? What's the five year survival rate for his type and stage?

MephistophelesApprentice · 19/12/2018 09:58

Tell him to try CBD fluid. Non-addictive, relaxing rather than stimulating, calms anxiety and is prescribed to cancer sufferers.

waitingforbaby2 · 19/12/2018 10:33

@CountessVonBoobs He had a tumour removed along with half of his left lung so they said it's very unlikely to come back and has a yearly check up he is due his 2nd check up soon and thanks for the recommendation @MephistophelesApprentice I will definitely look into that

I really doubt that someone who wasn't a smoker would suddenly take up e cigs. Sounds like he hid it from you.
I wouldn't be happy about this at all, considering his prognosis.

aintnopartylikeansclubparty · 19/12/2018 10:44

Sorry diagnosis

Ginandsonicscrewdriver · 19/12/2018 10:46

My friend started chewing nicotene gum because she felt it gave her an edge. She’s never smoked though - not completely outwith the realms of possibility.

trojanpony · 19/12/2018 11:03

This is bizarre behaviour and something doesn’t add up... I’d be suspicious

People don’t just start vapping because they are stressed - it’s a conscious effort you have to go out and buy the equipment.

Could it belong to someone else and he is lying?
Or was he secretly smoking before...?

ToastyFingers · 19/12/2018 11:17

Loads of people who had never smoked started vaping a few years ago. It was seen as 'cool' round these parts.

atinymew · 19/12/2018 11:29

I find it utterly bizarre that someone who has never smoked before would take up vaping. DP's cousin started last year even though she had never smoked before in her life. I just don't understand it.

I can understand why you're upset, OP. I would be too.

SierraSmythe · 19/12/2018 11:40

This. Something is very amiss here. And surely if he was just starting he would have just bought one bottle of liquid to try it out. And why didn't he tell you??

You say you believe he just started because one bottle was a quarter used but surely that would be the case even if he started 10 years ago! One bottle is always going to be slightly used and the others full, no?

My bet is that it either belongs to someone else (OW?) or he's been doing it for a while (mid-life crisis?) Either way, I'd struggle to get over this. If my DH had had lung cancer and was doing something that could possibly lead to him getting it again I would be furious.

SierraSmythe · 19/12/2018 11:41

But people who've had lung cancer?

Butteredghost · 19/12/2018 11:48

This seems a bit strange but in his defense, vaping hasn't yet been shown to cause lung problems (although it hasn't been shown that it hasn't) and if he really didn't smoke before his cancer was a fluke anyway. What type of lung cancer did he have? Some types are mostly associated with smoking and others aren't.

AtrociousCircumstance · 19/12/2018 11:51

Vaping can cause popcorn lung:

For him to do this is an absolute death wish and I’m not surprised you’re so upset.
