I've done a boo boo and not ordered my fillet of beef in time to cook for my family on Christmas Eve... I can only get it for New Year.

Does anyone know if I can use a different cut?!

I assume this is a stupid suggestion but can you not go to the shop and buy one instead of having it delivered...?

ButteryParsnips · 18/12/2018 19:58

Salmon Wellington? It's a thing.

Bunnybigears · 18/12/2018 19:59

Try a different butcher? Go to a supermarket? Make something else? New Years eve is quite a long way away yet.

Isitweekendyet · 18/12/2018 20:00

@unihorn You'd think wouldn't you! Everywhere and I mean everywhere only gets them in to order... I was ordering from M&S to have it delivered in store but apparently it takes a week even though it says on their website three days.

@Butteryparsnips My DH would be all over that but sadly the rest of my family would take one look and be like wtf

Try this - it’s absolutely gorgeous. I make it as one big wellington rather than individual ones as I prefer it. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.bbc.com/food/recipes/pork_wellingtons_with_35703/amp

Aquamarine1029 · 18/12/2018 20:03

I made a pork Wellington once and it was delicious.

iamyourequal · 18/12/2018 20:03

I wouldn’t risk a different cut. Sirloin might be tender enough but would likely be the wrong shape. Go to a local butchers tomorrow and order for collection on Monday.

Unihorn · 18/12/2018 20:03

I did wonder! Costco do have some if that's any good. And it's a shame salmon eellington wouldn't go down well as it's.lovely!

Bunnybigears · 18/12/2018 20:03

Most independent butchers will be able to get you one.

formerbabe · 18/12/2018 20:04

You could buy individuals steaks and make individual beef wellingtons instead of one big one.

OhLemons · 18/12/2018 20:06

Our M&S had them in stock tonight. They had a lot more of the larger Christmas items today, such as large fruit salads, large trifles and deserts along with large joints of meat.

Isitweekendyet · 18/12/2018 20:06

Unfortunately all butchers near me require a week to order one in... completely missed the Christmas rush.

Pork wellington or individual ones are a really good option!

Morrisons will be able to do it for you at their butchery counter. They’ve helped me before

CrazyOldBagLady · 18/12/2018 20:08

I went to our local market and bought a fillet from a butcher there on the same day, maybe this is an option. If o couldn't get one I think I would pick another recipe. Some sort of herb crusted rack of lamb if you are looking for something to knock their socks off.

Laska2Meryls · 18/12/2018 20:09

Can you get Venison where you are ? (local butcher or Waitrose do it and Sainsburys) venison wellington

Isitweekendyet · 18/12/2018 20:10

I'm going to try in store in Marks and Morrisons tomorrow to see if I have any luck.

Thank you all for your suggestions.

Has anyone ever made a beef wellington with another cut?

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 18/12/2018 20:11

I do individuals. Also means I can cook the beef to suit heathens that like it well done.

Or swap meat for salmon.

meow1989 · 18/12/2018 20:11

There's quite a few recipes for minced beef Wellington online, Jamie Oliver does one.

Laska2Meryls · 18/12/2018 20:11

Here is a Good Food article of Alternative Wellingtons Pork looks good

iamyourequal · 18/12/2018 20:12

I really don’t think Pork wellington is a contender. Isn’t half the loveliness of beef Wellington cutting it open to see the lovely pink centre? If you do that with pork you might poison your whole family for Christmas Day!

Chocolate1984 · 18/12/2018 20:13

Our Waitrose sells fillet beef at the butchers counter all year round. Morrisons & Sainsbury start selling it from the butchers a week before Christmas.

Sweetpea55 · 18/12/2018 20:14

I once had a chicken wellington

CrunchieFriday · 18/12/2018 20:18

I have done a version of beef wellington with pork loin. Finely chop mushrooms and cook down with lashings of butter, a dash of mushroom ketchup if you have it, a dash of Worcester sauce , add your favourite "posh" stuffing mix and some chopped fresh herbs to match your stuffing. cool. smear on top of pork loin and wrap in puff pastry.

It is delicious!

shpoot · 18/12/2018 20:19

Aldi has them last night

CrunchieFriday · 18/12/2018 20:19

Or see if Cook or similar have any beef wellingtons left?
