AIBU to leave my engine running for ten mins at 6.45 each morning (M-F)?

Neighbours have just come to the door with a Christmas card and a polite request to be more quiet in the mornings.

I usually leave at 7am to drop dd at breakfast club and get myself to work at 8am (I work Mon-Fri only - no weekends).

Now it's getting colder, the car is unbearably cold in the mornings so last week I started nipping out 10-15 mins earlier while dd was brushing her teeth so the car would be warm for us getting in and the frost/ice would be mostly melted from the window.

Neighbours have revealed that they are normally woken by me leaving most mornings at 7am but they can put up with it as I leave immediately so they are able to go back to sleep. However, they are not willing to put up with what I've been doing recently as they have found it impossible to go back to sleep having been awake for so long waiting for me to leave with the engine running ... Hmm

They have suggested I park further away from the house.

This is my first winter with these neighbours. They only moved in beginning of the year and we're polite to each other but not any more than 'hello' acquaintances. We live very rurally - just our two houses - in woodland area. Any noise carries and it is mostly silent (why I moved here - now I'm the one being a noise pest, it would appear). No street lights. 5 minute drive down our landlord's private (god awful road) onto the public road where there are other houses.

If I parked further away, that is further for me and DD to walk to the car each morning - in the pitch black - with our bags. Likewise, it is further for us to walk to the house each evening when we get back.

Not sure what the solution is. I told them I wasn't keen to park farther away (due to the above concerns) but they've asked me to give it a try at least for tomorrow. I've agreed to try it.

AIBU to ask for your ideas on what a peaceful resolution to this would be?

My point is that the hysteria over illegality it daft. Police are so stretched (unfortunately) that stuff like leaving the car running should absolutely not be a priority. And realistically, you'd be hard pressed to find a policeman in my area that time. Well, a policeman in public at any time, in my area. The only time I've seen policeman on the streets is when I visit my local city. So chances of a policeman being on duty at 6am on the street in ops quiet area, is very unlikely

Trinity66 · 18/12/2018 16:58

There's 29 pages so I'm not RTFT but hopefully everyone has told you how selfish and Unreasonable you are

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/12/2018 16:59

That check's been truly cancelled, Trinity.

Shriek · 18/12/2018 16:59

Not even answering your point about taking this piss just because you're on private land miss - see pp

Trinity66 · 18/12/2018 17:01

Ahh how I look forward to another ten pages of people not reading ops update and telling her she is unreasonable

Are you going to read them all? You could just....not

Shriek · 18/12/2018 17:03

This actually should be a priority as the planet is dying, obvs, I don't know how anyone cannot have noticed.

It's simple if you're stationary you have no need of an engine running, including waiting idling engine outside schools (and killing kids and teachers), waiting at traffic lights, railway crossings, etc.

There is absolutely no justification for it against this background

247mummsy · 18/12/2018 17:18

So in the thick frost when this lady does get in the car (instead of warming the car up for 10 mins prior) she’s going to have to sit there for 10 mins anyway before she can drive off to defrost and clear the mist and condensation inside which is exactly the same as just leaving the engine on.

Shriek · 18/12/2018 17:21

@247mumsy
No, clearly you make your car safe as a priority. Read the thread, its really very easy and simple and does not involve idling engine that's just short-sighted view

Madein1995 · 18/12/2018 17:23

I disagree shriek. I think shoplifters, muggers, murderers, child abusers, fraudsters, wife abusers, gangs etc etc are a much higher priority. I think the police just channel their energies into catching them first. Leaving a car ticking over isn't a serious crime for goodness sake. Murder, rape, abuse, kind of are ...

tryingtobehave · 18/12/2018 17:24

Can someone repost the Amazon link to the car heater? Thx.

Imissgmichael · 18/12/2018 17:29

Of course not Shriek, you actually don’t want to admit it isn’t illegal so throw your dummy out.

Missed the bit where the OP said she won’t do it again and I haven’t actually said I ever do it? Thought not.

Still haven’t explained how you can get a PCN for a non crime.

Do crack on with your indignation though. It’s really amusing.

Shriek · 18/12/2018 17:33

You need to start your own thread 1995 what are you actually on about

Teateaandmoretea · 18/12/2018 17:34

Also, no, you're unlikelt to getbanged upas someone so eloquently put it, but is that seriously what it takes for some to respect the environment and others in close proximity???!!! Seriously, threat of prison just to show some consideration to others and consider the catastrophic impact on the natural habitat of the creatures of the planet.

If you couldn't see out of your window and caused a serious accident/ killed someone you may well get banged up.....

tryingtobehave · 18/12/2018 17:41

Thanks @Myimaginarycathasfleas 👍

Skyejuly · 18/12/2018 18:04

I do this. My car is awful mist inside and takes ages to clear

Madein1995 · 18/12/2018 18:06

shriek first of all, lose the attitude. We're adults, not tabtrumming toddlers. Lets act like it.

Second of all - 'what am I on about'. I stated that people are highly unlikely to be arrested for warming the car. That police are busy enough as it is. I said this because of people harping on about the legality of it. I was pointing out that the car issue isn't a priority, nor should it be.

You responded it should be a priority because it's dangerous

I replied I disagreed, it shouldn't be a priority. That it isn't a serious crime and police should continue to focus on crime rather than focus on minor care issues..

That is what I was 'on about'.

You seem very aggressive and rude, not just to me but to others too. You seem to be taking this thread personally?

Excellent. Great to see a bit of sense.

E17Stowmum · 18/12/2018 20:11

Must be a wind-up, surely?

Flowerpot2005 · 18/12/2018 20:17

I think OP has had some real shitty responses. That said, it never fails to amaze me how women get stuck into other women.

OP has graciously accepted she hadn't appreciated the impact on the neighbour. She is happy to alter her routine.

Given where she is, given she & her DD are susceptible to the cold, who is anyone to tell them they are being soft , wrap up more etc.

Lots of little tricks to help OP, my car is a 3yr old polo, it's ruddy crap at demisting & drives me nuts. Sometimes all you can do is sit with the blower on waiting, you've no choice. That said, neighbour was lovely about it & you're taking steps to help. Good on you!

ThreeJumpersIsNotEnough · 18/12/2018 21:09

Thanks once again for all the tips! It's been pretty mild this week so have been managing to set off right away at 7am but looking forward to giving everything a try on the colder days. Quite relieved to see I've not been alone in running the engine on colder days as I was starting to feel a bit daft.

Would still love some clarification over whether or not it's illegal to leave the engine running while i run into the house for two mins e.g . To check if turned the iron off. There is no chance a police man would be near my house so it's more for my own peace of mind. Everything I'm finding on internet refers to public roads.

Madein1995 · 18/12/2018 21:27

three it's fine to do it on a private road

masterandmargarita · 18/12/2018 21:30

Made in - it's a little rich you're telling other posters to lose the attitude

MrsDesireeCarthorse · 18/12/2018 21:33

it never fails to amaze me how women get stuck into other women.

Or PEOPLE do this to PEOPLE. Fuck off with that presumptuous gendered shit.

Madein1995 · 18/12/2018 21:36

Private property, that should say.
