To find it a bit upsetting that my Dec born dc gets shit presents...

From relatives. I know it's an expensive time of year but it's the same date every year, hardly shocking.

I put a lot of effort into all my nieces and nephews birthday presents throughout the year and wouldn't dream of wrapping their present up in Christmas paper or spending £3 on a present "because it's Christmas soon". Every birthday so far this has happened!

I'm probably being unreasonable, but I just feel sorry for my dc!

YABU. You're children are very inconsiderate too. No thought fit any one all these people with their December birthdays. WinkGrin.
Just kidding hence the wink and the grin
My nephew is a December baby.
I spend just as much on him as I do on his brother who is an August baby.
My sister even says. As you say there is a year to plan for these things.
I knew someone well knew of them whose dd was a Christmas day baby and She used to insist on people buying her 2 presents. As it wasn't her fault her db is Christmas day and If her birthday was in April shed a separate birthday present. I can't argue with that.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 14/12/2018 11:55

My dd is Dec the 30th.

Her Aunt once gave her a summer dress then had a go at her when she didnt look grateful enough. She was 7, she also has Autism.

I hate her birthday being when it is, no one gives a shit so we have no choice but to spend it with family that don't care. It's crap.

Toooldtocareanymore · 14/12/2018 11:55

I have a close family friend with a daughter who's birthday is this week, when she hit about 3/4 years she decided to ask us all to only get either clothes, wearable's or books for birthday - this can include pjs, blankets, duvets covers, bags etc as different years she's been into different things so say didn't want clothes. But no toys or sweets or art/craft stuff , toys are then all for xmas, she's older now so its more electronics makeup smellies etc for xmas but the DD loves it, actually her whole new winter wardrobe just before xmas, and i think we did up our game a bit as we now had a plan . My friends reason was not that we got crap presents but often family was buying stuff Santa had planned, and there was often a week of scurrying round finding replacements or the novelty of santa was lost in the wash of small plastic toys. Maybe you can suggest something to family next year that suits you?

Lazybonita · 14/12/2018 11:57

Yanbu. My ds2’s Birthday is in January and I refuse to let it be shit. He gets lots of good presents and a birthday trip every year which is nice as it gives us all something to look forward to after Christmas.

agentdaisy · 14/12/2018 11:59

Yanbu. My birthday is just after Christmas and as a child I had a certain aunt relative who would always buy me a combined Christmas and birthday present, maybe once I got a small box of chocolates for my birthday as "its just been Christmas".

I've got a December born dc and dn, plus a dc and sil just after Christmas, and I've always made sure they get separate presents to the value I'd spend on my other dcs/dns for christmas and birthday.

ExFury · 14/12/2018 12:05

My DDs birthday is December and I always made it very clear to family that it was her birthday. If they want to do small birthday presents then they do that for all the kids, not just her. Same with when my SIL suggested a combined present (now I don’t mind combined presents if it’s a bigger thing that she really wants, but not a £5 this will do both from someone who expects a lot spent on their own kids) and she at least had the grace to look shame faced when I asked how that was going to work combining Christmas and birthday presents for her 2 June borns.

It’s not difficult to plan ahead if you have a niece or nephew with a December birthday really. It just takes giving a shit enough to do it.

ItsNiceItsDifferentItsUnusual · 14/12/2018 12:05

My ds1 is a late Dec baby and so far it's all been ok. I don't feel people put any less effort into it, although scheduling his party is a pain.

He hasn't said anything negative as yet although we do make a big deal of his birthday just as we would with any other time of year. I try to look at it that most people are happy, everything looks beautiful, and it's nice to share that.

Thing I find most difficult is buying stuff to last basically a whole year. I try not to buy toys outside of bday/Christmas so that does mean a big gap for ds1.

MissMooMoo · 14/12/2018 12:06

Yes it is awful! Mine is beginning of December and most of my presents are wrapped in xmas paper or I get a birthday and xmas gift in one. As I child I knew I was missing out.
My DH has a January birthday, equally as annoying.
We usually try and have a weekend away together in July and skip birthday gifts to each other in Dec and Jan

DavedeeDozyBeakyMickandTich · 14/12/2018 12:08

I'm sorry for all the near Christmas birthday people who have had a shit time!

My 11yr old dd has her birthday in very early January and she always has a great birthday. All relatives have so far never sent joint presents and all seem conscientious about making her birthday special, seperate to Christmas. I haven't asked them to do this, they just think that way already. I take down all Xmas decorations and make sure all Xmas food and drink is gone before new year's Day (good excuse to use it all up on new year's eve!) so then it's all about her birthday. She's had parties/days out/trips away on her actual birthday, no problems, I just have to make sure I'm well organised in advance. She loves having her birthday so close to Christmas, she says it's nice to have another thing to look forward to after Xmas day has come and gone. It's quite useful for us all actually as we can get her gifts in the post Xmas sales. It's more a challenge for me getting everything organised in the run up to Christmas. Especially the year I did a big surprise party! At least it's all out the way at once though.

QuitMoaning · 14/12/2018 12:09

It is my OH 50th birthday on 27th December and it is a nightmare organising a celebration.
Family meal = have to have set Christmas menu
Organising friends to have a get together and catering for it is a nightmare.
Even getting a cake made for him has proved problematic and I don’t have time (or much skill) to make it myself. And he might notice...

Branleuse · 14/12/2018 12:11

Just downgrade the presents you get for everyone else. I have a big extended family and we just mainlybuy for own own immediate families otherwise it gets silly.

Porla · 14/12/2018 12:11

I know a family where the mum and son both have birthdays on Christmas Day!

cadburyegg · 14/12/2018 12:18

YANBU.

Although there are disadvantages and advantages to birthdays at all points of the year. Swings and roundabouts.

bevelino · 14/12/2018 12:18

My December birthday has been a massive letdown all my life. One year I managed to organise a birthday dinner at a restaurant and when my friends sang happy birthday, our table were berated by other diners for ruining their Christmas parties.

lboogy · 14/12/2018 12:23

I'm a January baby. Sadly I always got a merry birthday present. It's totally wrong but it's the expense associated

I'm not big into my birthday as a result. It doesn't feel special

anniehm · 14/12/2018 12:27

My DD's friends birthday is Christmas Day, she has an annual party at the end of the school term in July! Her parents do birthday gifts then too. And now they are teens her parties are quite well regarded kwim!

Stilllivinginazoo · 14/12/2018 12:27

DS is 18th and we always try and make him feel special as everyone else's birthdays(he's 13this year)despite some people moaning "you could've times that a bit better"Xmas Angry
Dd1 is 5th Jan and she benefited greatly from sale items with her birthday money, but now an adult does find only her partner wants go out with her as everyone is hasn't budgeted her in and they're skint

Hamandcrispsandwich · 14/12/2018 12:34

My friend, her DH and her DS all have December birthdays.
In Jan, Her sister, brother, 2 of her sisters DC, cousin and aunt all have a birthday. Her other sister is expecting twins 15th Jan next year too!

During a conversation with a group of us, she announced she'd never received/given joint gifts. One friend was horrified and asked her where she gets all her money fromShock

Said friend explained that as they're all born in December/Jan, she saves the other 10 months of the year!

When I had alot of December/Jan birthdays, I also saved and brought separate, unless it was something big/quite expensive and the person was told in advance!

Hope your DC has a great birthday!

Ellisandra · 14/12/2018 12:36

It’s the same for me - now in my 50s, I can at least tell you that it hasn’t ruined my life Smile

But I hear you!

My favourite was receiving a Xmas card with happy birthday written in it Hmm

Letsmoveondude · 14/12/2018 12:37

DDs bday is 26th December, I feel you!
So there’s a mass of stress to make sure that she actually has a great birthday.

We have the same stuff with people doing 1 present which we don’t like.

mostlysinging · 14/12/2018 12:37

My DS birthday is on 31 December and I've also made sure we give him separate presents and asked family to do the same. His birthday gets overshadowed by Christmas and New Year's Eve but he's good about it and so far so good (he's 16 this year). At the moment he likes the fact he's never had to go to school on his birthday and people tend to be around and off work.

I have twin niece/nephew at the beginning of January too and am very mindful they get separate presents too.

BrendasUmbrella · 14/12/2018 12:38

Our DC's birthday is 24th December. We give him a "half birthday" in summer because his birthday gets so overlooked by friends and relatives every year.

SubtitlesOn · 14/12/2018 12:40

My brother is Christmas Eve

He always had a 1/2 birthday party with presents on 24th June so lots of school friends able to come and warmer weather so could be outside in the garden

He would get small presents on Christmas Eve too

coragreta · 14/12/2018 12:41

I'm early jan and had a lot of joint presents. It in all my years I have never once even noticed what a present was wrapped in. Who cares? I wrap my December babies pressie in Christmas wrap and probably my Feb baby too if there's any left. Seriously it goes in the bin anyway.

HotChocolateWeather · 14/12/2018 12:42

I hate it. A few in my family have birthdays within a week either side of Christmas. We all hate it.

Joint gifts, no gifts at all, no one around or all too skint or partied out to celebrate.

None of my kids have December birthdays, very deliberately.
