Are we the only ones who don't buy each other presents?

Me and my partner don't really buy one another Xmas or birthday presents, and haven't done for many years. It's not that we don't like each other, but more that we wouldn't know what to buy, that it would feel like a little bit of a waste of money, and that we have joint finances anyway!

Are we the only ones, or does everybody buy diligently for their partners?

We tend to buy experiences rather than gifts, usually theatre tickets. Although it's always bought for the year ahead because of how damn expensive they are. So we're off to the theatre next week and we bought those tickets last Christmas. This Christmas we've got tickets for the theatre next November iyswim.

Though this year we did say the Xbox we got in the Black Friday Deals was sort of an extra Christmas present to each other as this year has been pretty shite.

I hate getting asked if I've done my Christmas shopping yet.

I haven't got a husband or kids of my own. So no, I haven't. I hardly ever do Christmas shopping.

We don't.

Plus in our extended family we only buy for the children.

JillGoodacre · 05/12/2018 16:55

We went through years of not being able to afford it so we've got out of the habit. We always travel at Christmas so that's our gift to each other really

Bluesheep8 · 05/12/2018 18:43

We don't. Or we try not to. We do for birthdays but don't even do cards on Valentine's day. That's because I bought him the exact same card and even wrote the same inside 2 years running so we decided it was a waste of money.

Wifeofapostie · 05/12/2018 20:24

We don't. We are both payed into and spend out of 1 bank account. We both, within reason get what we want when we want. We do buy each other birthday presents though!

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 05/12/2018 20:28

It upsets our children if someone doesn't get presents, so we make sure there is something for each of us to open and Christmas and birthdays, but we don't care about it.
We do give each other gifts, but we don't usually wait for a set day. I recently bought Mr Carpet a car, because his old one was elderly and wheezing. I made a joke about being able to give him any old shite for Christmas now, but to be fair that's what I would have done anyway!
We don't need much and we don't value having loads of stuff, so we tend to buy each other things we need, when we need them.

I love shopping for my husband! Also, he buys me the sort of lovely treats that I just wouldn’t splash out on otherwise ( designer handbags, fancy custom jewellery etc) i don’t need anything necessarily, our gifts to each other are special treats. Also we always fill a stocking for each other with useful little bits we know each other like - fave shampoo, fave deodorant, fave choccies, new socks and so on.

Me and my DH have been together over a decade and we don't buy eachother birthday or Christmas gifts. We tend to just save the money and put it towards the house or a day out etc.
