To let young children eat fruitcake?

I have made a proper fruitcake this year. I’ve been feeding it Brandy for 6 weeks. I just broke down and tasted a tiny sliver and it was amazing.

So when Christmas comes do I
A) hoard this booze soaked cake for the grownups
B) let the kids ages 6-12 have a piece despite the alcohol
C) pretend I didn’t make fruitcake at all and just sneak a piece out of its hiding place when no one is looking so I can eat it all myself

I am always surprised when someone says - kids don't like x. Kids are like adults - they like different things. I loved liver as a kid for example, wouldn't eat it now.

JammieCodger · 06/12/2018 09:41

I've never met a kid who didn't like (brandy laden) fruit cake, although my weirdo sister used to pick the icing off and discard it. My children and my neices and nephews also hoovered up boozy mince pies, christmas pud, brandy butter and sherry trifle from a very early age. Never did them any harm.

NobodysChild · 06/12/2018 11:07

Fruitcake and mature cheddar. Always had this when younger and still do.

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 06/12/2018 16:37

Hmm. I've always been a fruitcake denier. But having recently tackled and resolved my 'I don't like dried fruit' thing, perhaps I should give it another go.

Especially if it is another excuse to eat more cheese.

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 06/12/2018 19:46

Fruitcake and mature cheddar.

Or stilton. Christmas cake and stilton

thighofrelief · 06/12/2018 20:05

As a child I disliked cake, all cake. Can you imagine? I've overcome my aversion though and suffered through so much cake since Cake

Childrenofthesun · 06/12/2018 21:47

My DC have always had some of the fruit cake at Christmas, since they were tiny - I used to pick any big chunks of nut out of their pieces. Even fussy DD2 will eat it.

I like to have a bit of stilton with mine!

ThanksItHasPockets · 06/12/2018 22:05

6yo DD really, properly adores fruitcake. I’ve made this year’s cake a bit less boozy, soaking the fruit in tea and feeding with sherry rather than brandy. We went to a christening a few weeks ago where there was a very boozy fruitcake on offer with the teas in the vestry. She set up a racket with another kid whereby she ate the cake and they ate the icing and marzipan.

On cake and cheese - I was mystified by the idea until I heard the cake described as a solid chutney, and I’m now a convert. But to ask a stupid question - you leave off the icing and marzipan, right...?

Gwenhwyfar · 07/12/2018 08:20

"stoppin Any decent christmas cake has some brandy in it."

I'm quite offended at your accusation that my T-total grandmother's Christmas cake was not decent.

abacucat · 07/12/2018 11:31

Be offended then.

Bittermints · 07/12/2018 13:00

Thanks, I don't know, because I tend to pick the icing and marzipan off anyway! (I give them both to my husband, who does like them.) I'd never thought of fruitcake as solid chutney but it's not far off. Chutney has a lot of vinegar and salt in it and no nuts or candied peel, cake has egg and flour, but otherwise yes, a huge overlap of ingredients, textures, flavours and both very British and not much liked in other countries, I believe. Interesting thought.

Fresta · 07/12/2018 16:36

We never ice the christmas cake, but if we did then wouldn't have cheese with it.

Iced fruit cakes are reserved for weddings round her.

Fresta · 07/12/2018 16:40

The tang of the cheese is designed to counteract the intense sweetness of the cake. Try cheese with a currant teacake - it's yummy as an off season alternative.

tentative3 · 07/12/2018 16:49

I've loved booze soaked fruitcake for as long as I can remember. My brother always ate it too.

tentative3 · 07/12/2018 16:51

Mind you my brother wasn't keen on my mum's rock hard icing. Concrete would have been a softer alternative.

Blondebakingmumma · 12/12/2018 09:12

I LOVE a good boozy fruitcake. Give the kids a tiny amount and then distract them with candy canes or other Christmas treats 😁

Dirtyjellycat · 11/09/2019 08:37

My 2.5 year old loves fruitcake and did so last Xmas too. I didn’t realise this was unusual.... maybe the prunes he has for breakfast have given him a love of dried fruit 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dirtyjellycat · 11/09/2019 08:39

OK no idea why I’ve just found a thread from last year!
Zombie alert!

BeanBag7 · 11/09/2019 08:41

Kids won't like fruitcake.
What a load of bollocks. What age do you suddenly become able to eat fruit cake?
Obviously some kids like it and some don't, same as some adults like it and some dont. My daughter is only 3 and she loves the stuff.

In answer to your OP I would offer the kids a small piece if they ask. Maybe have an alternative for the kids or adults who dont like it.

EerieSilence · 11/09/2019 08:44

DD wouldn't eat fruitcake if I told her a little Santa with Rudolph will appear after the first bite.
Save half for yourself. Get some thin slices out for the adults. Make a chocolate one for the children. Get some extra thick marzipan for yours and the thinner layer for other adults. That's what the little selfish fruit cake loving little divil whispers in my ear right now at least.

daisychicken · 11/09/2019 08:46

Its obviously C OP.. cause I love fruitcake and have done since I was tiny but unfortunately my 2 dc have loved fruitcake since they were tiny as well so I wouldn't get away with C and will have to go with option B.

Tbh, don't think the alcohol in a fruitcake is an issue anyway!

EerieSilence · 11/09/2019 08:47

I hated raisins when I was a kid and you wouldn't see me eating fruitcake or anything with raisins in it. I can't get enough of it now. Yum. Tastes can change. I even recently discovered I love the taste of caraway seeds which I completely disliked before so I avoided it for a long time.

saraclara · 11/09/2019 08:52

Has anyone ever got drunk on fruitcake?

Well then, the kids can eat it.

thinkfast · 11/09/2019 09:10

I'm inspired to make one by this thread. Never made one before. Can someone please share a recipe and explain how you feed the cake brandy?
