To let young children eat fruitcake?

I have made a proper fruitcake this year. I’ve been feeding it Brandy for 6 weeks. I just broke down and tasted a tiny sliver and it was amazing.

So when Christmas comes do I
A) hoard this booze soaked cake for the grownups
B) let the kids ages 6-12 have a piece despite the alcohol
C) pretend I didn’t make fruitcake at all and just sneak a piece out of its hiding place when no one is looking so I can eat it all myself

C

There is no discussion on the matter

C

Eat it.

Snuck food is tastier to start off with.

Snuck, brandy-enriched Christmas cake . . . . .

It's kinder all round.

Children won't enjoy it because of the brandy and will spit it out . . .

. . . Adults . . . well, suppose even one of them is susceptible to substance abuse . . . maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but one day you may learn that your cake was a gateway confection to a lifetime of addiction . . .

. . . could you ever forgive yourself?

Mine have always loved a decent, richly fruited and brandy soaked Christmas cake. One used to pick the marzipan off though.

ForalltheSaints · 05/12/2018 19:30

Why would it be other than C? I don't understand these other options!

April2020mom · 05/12/2018 19:53

My family prefer chocolate cake instead. But I love eating fruit cake at Christmas.
Our Christmas cake always is made with some sort of wine. The children only eat one or two slices of cake. Option B sounds the most fun.

User0ne · 05/12/2018 19:59

Grin I make boozy Xmas cake and both my kids love it (2years and 9 months). I'm now wondering if someone will shop me/tell me I'm a terrible parent

EdisonLightBulb · 05/12/2018 20:04

I never ate fruit cake, Christmas pudding or mince pies until about 35, can't get enough now. Christmas cake and cheese? Is there another way?

Yorkshire born and bred.

Sitranced · 05/12/2018 20:06

When I was a kid my mum used to tell me I wouldn't like her fruitcake. She lied.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 05/12/2018 20:13

I make the Delia traditional one and steep it in brandy. Can't stand the stuff myself, but my four kids have loved it since they were small. Their little faces when I used to wrap up big chunks for the relatives to take home.

agnurse · 05/12/2018 20:22

I agree with letting the parents know. I can't see that there would be a ton of alcohol in each individual slice.

I think that whether or not one likes fruitcake depends on how it is made. My mum makes AMAZING golden fruitcake. I once commented that I didn't see how people can't stand fruitcake. Dad explained to me that not all fruitcake is as good as Mum's. I don't think it has any alcohol in it, but she does use raisins, candied fruit, and maraschino cherries in it.

SoftSheen · 05/12/2018 20:31

My children (3 and 7) love fruitcake.

BestestBrownies · 05/12/2018 20:44

Well so far over the last 2 months my Christmas fruit cakes have enjoyed Brandy, Ginger liqueur and (homemade), Damson Gin. I checked on them today and they smell AMAAAZING. not so

I know from previous experience that the DN's (all 6 of them) aged 9-15, will descend on it like locusts, so have made an extra one that will be hidden and consumed in secret by the adults when they've hoovered up the first one. Mwahahahahaha!

I don't see the harm in kids consuming boozy cake, Christmas pud, liqueur chocolates etc. The amount of alcohol is negligible anyway.

I use Nigel Slater's recipe for Christmas cake, but adapted to be gluten-free so I get to eat it as well

Shakingallover · 05/12/2018 20:55

I've never met a child who enjoyed fruitcake(I can't blame them. It's disgusting) but I'm sure that they exist and I see no harm in giving them a tiny piece.

Jezzifishie · 05/12/2018 21:08

I'm bemused by the comment about children not liking raisins. My DD and her friends would live on them if they could!

Bobswife39 · 05/12/2018 21:23

My kids would be on that cake faster than you could slice it, they love a bit of fruitcake 🍰

Hotfootit · 05/12/2018 21:27

C (obvs)

Nothisispatrick · 05/12/2018 21:29

It’s fine, if they’ll eat it. Fruitcake is rank.

Cleanermaidcook · 05/12/2018 21:30

My 2 (9+10) love fruitcake, with alcohol. I've no problem with them having a slice, however I will not have them sharing my good cheese, or the port - step away from my port you cheesestealing rugrats!

MereDintofPandiculation · 05/12/2018 21:39

Fruit cake goes with creamy Lancashire of course, everything else would be a crime, yes if you'e a Lancastrian, but if you live somewhere civilised then it's Wensleydale.

I can't remember when I first enjoyed fruitcake, but I remember my birthday from 4 upwards, and my birthday cakes were always fruitcake (probably the same batch as the Christmas cakes (note the plural)).

Fresta · 05/12/2018 22:24

My dd has always loved fruit cake right from being tiny- why wouldn't she? Grandma makes the best!

And it's Wenselydale, not Lancashire that goes with it!

StoppinBy · 06/12/2018 00:48

@abacucat My husbands family are non drinkers, the light Fruit cake my MIL makes and her Christmas pudding are both non alcoholic and they are both delicious.

SleepingStandingUp · 06/12/2018 01:14

Small slice perfectly fine

Bittermints · 06/12/2018 07:24

I know not everyone likes things made with dried fruit, but rank? Come on.

I love fruitcake, mince pies, Christmas pudding. I'm not very keen on icing, can take or leave marzipan, but a good bit of fruitcake, with or without Wensleydale, is gorgeous.

PumpkinKitty82 · 06/12/2018 07:38

Yeah I wouldn’t have thought kids would like fruitcake but saying that , I’d rather chew off my own foot than eat it.
Wish I liked it though, I try mince pies and Christmas cake every year but just can’t make myself enjoy them

SoyDora · 06/12/2018 07:41

My DC pick off the marzipan and icing and just eat the cake, as do I!

SwayingInTime · 06/12/2018 08:50

I like fruit cake spread with brandy butter!
