To let young children eat fruitcake?

I have made a proper fruitcake this year. I’ve been feeding it Brandy for 6 weeks. I just broke down and tasted a tiny sliver and it was amazing.

So when Christmas comes do I
A) hoard this booze soaked cake for the grownups
B) let the kids ages 6-12 have a piece despite the alcohol
C) pretend I didn’t make fruitcake at all and just sneak a piece out of its hiding place when no one is looking so I can eat it all myself

My 6yr old loves fruit cake. As do all of us, except my sister who is one of those raisin hating weirdos.

Purpleartichoke · 05/12/2018 04:04

This will be one of many treats. I was just wondering if the booze made it verboten.

I'd let them have a sliver.

My son's always liked fruit cake. And raisins, he's a fussy eater too.

Roystonv · 05/12/2018 04:37

Fruit cake with Wensleydale yum (not Stilton as some idiot tv chef said the other day)

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/12/2018 04:49

My dd has loved Christmas cake since about the age of 6. I don’t think there is that much alcohol in a slice. I do actually cook the delia last minute Christmas one with no alcohol and a jar of mincemeat instead as I like it far better. But if I preferred the boozy one that would also be fine too.

ToeCleavage · 05/12/2018 04:55

Let them eat fruitcake.

HappyEverIftar · 05/12/2018 05:20

My gran used to feed her cheistmas cake with whiskey and brandy (!) from about September and as kids, we always had some at Christmas time, hasn't done me any harm, though she did take out the sixpences so we wouldn't swallow them accidentally Grin

greensnail · 05/12/2018 05:21

Christmas cake is dd1's absolute favourite, she would be very miffed to not be allowed a slice.

shiveringtimber · 05/12/2018 05:24

If they like it, let them have a little slice. I love it but many don't.

Leyani · 05/12/2018 05:43

Fruit cake goes with creamy Lancashire of course, everything else would be a crime 😋

HotInWinter · 05/12/2018 05:48

C, or, more realistically, D - whoever wants Christmas cake, whatever age, can have some.

I'm putting DS1 forward as a child that will eat it in vast quantities. DS2 will eat a small amount.

PersonaNonGarter · 05/12/2018 06:05

YY to fruitcake and cheese.

Make a Yule log to distract the children.

Mrscog · 05/12/2018 06:08

My Ds’s love Christmas pudding/cake/mince pies etc! The alcohol hasn’t even crossed my mind and they’ve had them since weaning!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 05/12/2018 08:48

If you never give it to them because "they won't like it", how will you ever find out if they do or not?

DisrespectfulAdultFemale · 05/12/2018 13:08

D) Send it to me and thus resolve your dilemma. I love fruitcake.

AllTakenSoRubbishUsername · 05/12/2018 13:40

My son LOVES fruitcake. The alcohol content is negligible in a little slice, since the actual alcohol evaporates anyway!

OlderThanAverageforMN · 05/12/2018 13:55

I think practically everything we used to eat at Christmas when I was a child had copious amounts of alcohol in it. Christmas cake and pudding made months in advance with the fruit stepping in rum and brandy. Sliced oranges served in brandy and sugar, whipped cream mousse with brandy stirred through, brandy butter, trifle with brandy, mascapone dessert with amaretto. All the lovely casseroles with wine, and other meats with wine infused gravys. I loved them all, still do. I don't actually drink alcohol though, so that's in some ways is quite odd.

Meangirls36 · 05/12/2018 14:00

Definitely pick up or make a chocolate yule log for the kids or that's what mince pies and satsumas are for:)

zukiecat · 05/12/2018 14:05

I loved fruit cake as a kid and still do!

I don't like cupcakes or sponge, fruitcake all the way for me!

I don't drink any alcohol at all, but I do enjoy a slice of Christmas cake and I love Christmas pudding

Seafoodeatit · 05/12/2018 17:29

C . I don't like fruit cake and am biased though, I've always just eaten the icing off Christmas cake...

MsLexic · 05/12/2018 17:31

No this type of cake is best eaten by the maker and maybe one significant other. Children can have something Icelandic.

toffee1000 · 05/12/2018 17:36

“Kids won’t like fruitcake”?? Bit of a sweeping generalisation isn’t it? Just because you or your kids don’t like it doesn’t mean other kids won’t. I’ve long liked fruit cake and Christmas pudding.

anniehm · 05/12/2018 17:42

Of course let them - but just limit portion size. They might not like it anyway

SoyDora · 05/12/2018 17:47

Kids won't like fruitcake

Mine love it. 5 and 3.
I’d let them have a little bit!

PinkCalluna · 05/12/2018 17:52

I’m a bit surprised by the number of posters assuming that kids don’t eat fruitcake!

My siblings, cousins and I all devoured Granny’s fruit cake as kids and now all our children do the same.

They also eat Christmas pudding (lit with whisky) and brandy butter.

I don’t think I know any children who don’t like it... or fruit shortbread or fruit biscuits.
