London! Inspired by another thread. Come and champion your side of the river Thames! Aibu to ask - which do you prefer - North or South London Smile

I read an interesting explanation of postcodes once (well, I thought it was interesting) - you have the east central (ie the City) and west central postcodes, then all the others have 1 as their most central location and then are alphabetical. Which explain why you have Cambewell as SE5 sitting next to Peckham which is SE15.

I think SW will have originally started as being southwest of the centre, rather than of the river.

Trills · 07/12/2018 14:44

That is interesting!

RiverTam · 07/12/2018 15:01

I'm so glad someone else thinks so! I think I read it in this book which is worth a read, I must have another dip into it.
London Suburbs

Only lived north of the river once, in the horror of Bethnal Green. Clapham, Tooting, Dulwich, Earlsfield and Streatham down south have all been great. Peckham and Brixton have good stuff too. All of the people I know who have experienced crime in their areas, live north, and they don't seem to have anywhere near the variety of nice bars and restaurants (central beside, but who wants to go there). Won't venture west, maybe Fulham at the most, find east overrated.

Craft1905 · 07/12/2018 15:16

All London postcodes are alphabetical apart from WC and EC areas. Also, the 1 postcodes (W1, E1 etc.) aren't alphabetical. Some areas, like N, just run from A ~ Z whilst others, such as SW, have two runs from A~ Z. The list, with a few missing spaces which cannot be explained, is;

SW2 Brixton SW3 Chelsea SW4 Clapham SW5 Earl's Court SW6 Fulham SW7 Knightsbridge SW8 Nine Elmes SW9 Stockwell SW10 World's End SW11 Battersea SW12 Balham SW13 Barnes SW14 East Sheen SW15 Putney SW16 Streatham SW17 Tooting SW18 Wandsworth SW19 Wimbledon SW20 Wimbledon Chase

Christ...I need to get out more!

KissingInTheRain · 07/12/2018 17:02

The ‘1s’ are the central sorting offices.

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 07/12/2018 17:31

This thread is like watching philosophers debate about how many angels can dance on a pinhead... so many people, interested in such a microscopic topic Hmm
Love from the rest of the world Grin

KissingInTheRain · 07/12/2018 18:52

True.

But it’s still better than hearing from Scottish Nationalists or Yorks v Lancs.

BeanBagLady · 07/12/2018 20:04

This thread is a bit of family bantz in response to -yet another— thread about how horrible London and Londoners are. Hopefully it might also let visitors know about some new areas. After all it is the Capital, it belongs to everyone!

RiverTam · 07/12/2018 23:26

Seamstress over 8 million people live in London, the capital of the UK, and they come from all around the globe. Hardly a miscroscopic topic.

Eliza9917 · 08/12/2018 19:52

@Craft1905 N18 isn't turnpike lane, its upper Edmonton.

bellabasset · 08/12/2018 20:08

South West London, the central Clapham station is Clapham Common which is one of the few island stations.

I love the commons, Clapham, Wandsworth , Wimbledon, Putney, Morden Park Richmond Park, easy access to Hyde Park and one of my favourite views in London from the restaurant in Peter Jones

Bunbunbunny · 09/12/2018 14:52

SW10 is Chelsea, Worlds End is in Chelsea but postcode also includes The Bromptons. It's a bit of a messed up postcode but it's my favourite Grin

vampirethriller · 09/12/2018 15:27

North. Crouch End, Wood Green. Though I did live in Streatham for a year once and it was very nice, it's just not the same.
I left a couple of years ago and wish I hadn't.

daisypond · 09/12/2018 15:56

There was a survey a couple of years back about the best place to live in London by postcode. Winner was SW4.

jay55 · 09/12/2018 15:57

I enjoyed living in south London but am now in east and transport is so much better. I don't like snooty north London though.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/12/2018 16:01

I don’t think I’ve ever been south of the river tbh.

TooManyPaws · 09/12/2018 16:07

North.

Of the Watford Gap, always.

Asthenia · 09/12/2018 22:55

South, always ❤️
