London! Inspired by another thread. Come and champion your side of the river Thames! Aibu to ask - which do you prefer - North or South London Smile

South West all the way. DH is from out of town, and can't get over how much 'green space there is... for London'.

BeanBagLady · 05/12/2018 23:01

“But most of those (admittedly great) places are within a stones throw of each other!”

Fair enough, I could get going on tne splendours of Greenwich from the Maritime Museum to the Planetarium, via Brockley with it’s fabulous Rivoli Ballroom ( that hosts lesbian tea dances). Or in the other direction to Kew Gardens and Ham House.

There are some shit awful gyratory systems though, I must admit. But I don’t hear them mentioned on traffic news updates as often as Hangar Lane.

BlowMeDownWithAFeatherMissis · 05/12/2018 23:18

North though I do like South as well. Lots of green space in the North too! Not just the Heath, lovely though it is - Ally Pally, Queens Wood and Highgate Wood, loads of parks like Clissold Park, Gillespie Park, Finsbury Park and Parkland Walk...

Chocolatebourbons · 05/12/2018 23:22

South...love the vibe and memories of my younger days when garage, drum & bass and jungle music was massivrle.

ilovekale · 06/12/2018 00:04

South!

ilovekale · 06/12/2018 00:09

Specifically south west london

TooTightJeans · 06/12/2018 00:21

South East.

Vivaldi1678 · 06/12/2018 01:30

North all the way, apart from the South Bank and Borough Market, which I regard as honorary north.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 06/12/2018 04:27

Oh no, you don't get to co-opt Borough Market as 'honorary North'!! It's been there since the 12th century. Very firmly South. Grin

cantfocus1 · 06/12/2018 06:45

South...love the vibe and memories of my younger days when garage, drum & bass and jungle music was massivrle. Miss those days 😥

AngeloMysterioso · 06/12/2018 06:53

South Weezy! Clapham, Wandsworth, Barnes, Wimbledon, Kew, Richmond... I miss living in SW so much Sad

ForalltheSaints · 06/12/2018 07:01

If south London was so great, MN Towers would be there. North London is where people live, South London is where they exist or endure. Some of the places in the South West that have been championed by others on this thread are in Greater London in name only, and are really part of Surrey (at least in cultural and cricketing terms).

MamaLovesMango · 06/12/2018 07:56

Me too @SittHakim. Moved out for work and won’t get to go back unless I win the lottery Sad

Trills · 06/12/2018 20:21

the river is the boundary between south west, south and south east which are all south of the river and west, north and east which are all north of the river.

Not in postcodes though.

There are some SW postcodes that are North of the river.

They're WRONG obviously.

Trills · 06/12/2018 20:27

Borough Market is in Southwark which is historically super dodgy/exciting (delete as appropriate), being outside of the city walls and all that.

And don't forget the Bishop of Southwark's Big Night Out

Craft1905 · 06/12/2018 21:40

Having an SW postcode does not put you in South London is you are north of the river. It puts you in either west or central London.

Buckingham Palace has an SW postcode, as does Harrods, and they're not in South London.

onemorecupofcoffeefortheroad · 06/12/2018 21:47

I have lived in both and both have good and bad. Grew up in the North West, moved to the North east, then to the South East and now to the South West. All have their good points but if I had my choice probably ..,, nah can’t choose...

PumpkinKitty82 · 06/12/2018 21:50

Don’t really get all the hate for West , lives there most of my life until 3 years ago.
I loved the mixed classes .
I had friends who lived in huge houses and had mega rich parents and then ones who lived on housing estates all their lives .
Ealing will always be close to my heart no matter how much of a shite hole it becomes every passing day .

Trills · 06/12/2018 21:51

That's what I meant.

SW postcodes north of the river and WRONG because they might make someone think you are in the south but you are clearly not.

Maelstrop · 06/12/2018 21:53

Definitely north. The south circular is a fucking trauma, getting to the M1 used to kill me from Stratham! One sodding lane, it's a joke.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 06/12/2018 21:54

North, without a doubt, where I grew up.

Eliza9917 · 06/12/2018 22:48

N18 for lyfe fam

Gilead · 06/12/2018 22:57

South! Wimbledon Common, Richmond Park.

Craft1905 · 07/12/2018 08:56

SW postcodes north of the river are WRONG because they might make someone think you are in the south but you are clearly not.

Spot on.

Amaaboutthis · 07/12/2018 09:26

Borough Market is in Southwark which is historically super dodgy/exciting (delete as appropriate), being outside of the city walls and all that.

Such a fabulous area, huge investment in leisure and feels like a place people live as well as coming for work. Commuters mixed with kids on scooters going to school, great little parks, allotments, heritage sites, good local shopping alongside great food. Real little gem in zone 1
