I have just read forty pages of thread and it’s almost full! Let us congregate here for answers!

Three days of my life this has taken up ! Aagghhh !
The name is definitely growing on me tho .

IamAporcupine · 06/12/2018 09:49

murmuration you can certainly be led to it. The conversation can simply go:

  • Urgh, this is impossible, I can't find the solution!
  • ....so, what does that mean....?
coolwalking · 06/12/2018 09:49

@IamAporcupine thank you for clarifying. I respectfully disagree. Just not satisfying enough a solution. Plus OP has said this is not the case but who knows if her solution is correct as she won't share it.

It reminds me of old game shows - 'say what you see' - 'the clue is the question (not a question in this case)

Still sticking with ' I know him as Well' as the response to make a joke.

This has amused me regardless of the outcome.

IamAporcupine · 06/12/2018 09:52

@IknowTheBoswellJoke - totally agree.

cherrysfortea · 06/12/2018 09:53

I disagree, the answer is not "there is no answer"

It's nonsensical

Bexyboo2207 · 06/12/2018 09:54

I'm still not convinced with this 'There is definitely something to 'get', however that something is that there is no answer'.

I understand the theory behind this, but the OP said numerous times on the first thread that the 'joke' isn't that there was no joke and it wasn't a bit of a wind up. Surely this 'there is no answer' would fall into the category of being a 'no joke'?

If it was that, she would have just said 'folks, calm your knickers, it's a load of crap, there is no joke, it's not even a joke it's just a riddle that gets you talking, when people ask you the answer, you just have to reply there is no answer, because there's nothing more to it, you can't say, because there's no answer'. Rather than play along with this, ahhhh I get it now and you all don't. SURELY??

Talith · 06/12/2018 09:58

But that's why the explanation I've been championing works - it still allows for people to interpret it as "no answer" but there IS a payoff.

There was a man whose name was Boswell, for short they called him Bosandhewalkedupthepostofficesteps... (I.E. not short at all!)

Look at how OP signs off on page 8 - (yes I'm a stuck record)

There's still technically no answer to give as it's all in the way you say it!

IamAporcupine · 06/12/2018 10:13

@Bexyboo2207 - there is a difference

there is no answer: we are just laughing at you while you try to work it out ----> wind up

the answer is that there is no (correct) answer: you have to work it out, and I cannot tell you the answer, etc etc ----> paradox

Talith · 06/12/2018 10:15

And I reckon when she says she can't tell you the answer it's purely because she's promised her mate. Other people subsequently go on to conjure with the idea you can't tell someone an answer because no answer exists.

MummyVaughan13 · 06/12/2018 10:16

I feel that @killingtime9198 has had a brilliant time torturing us all and has now gone off to live her life happily as we still scratch our heads.. but karmas a bitch

Bexyboo2207 · 06/12/2018 10:30

@IamAporcupine I do see the difference between a wind up and paradox in this, (although I would still class a paradox as being in the category of 'no joke' which the OP said it definitely wasn't a 'no joke') and I do get that's how people can interpret it.

What I don't understand is the way the OP came back to say she had an epiphany and 'got it' and kept the suspense with the 'I can't tell you, there's no answer', rather than explaining that it wasn't actually a joke, it's actually hugely disappointing and just a very shit riddle of sorts.

She said numerous times it was a joke, but all these explanations of the answer being there is no answer, don't fit in with it being a joke.

I don't think I can accept such a crap, underwhelming explanation to something that's messed with my head for so long!!

thethirdbiscuiteer · 06/12/2018 10:38

@Bexyboo2207 I'm with you. I think the OP just pulled a massive dick move on us all. Unfortunately not everyone behaves nicely on online forums!

IamAporcupine · 06/12/2018 10:41

@Bexyboo2207 - well, if it is true that she spent 20 years trying to work it out, once she got it I can sort of see why she'd like us to rot in hell for a bit longer than 3 days?

I do wonder if she is reading?

NonExistentFox · 06/12/2018 10:42

Look at how OP signs off on page 8

People do that all the time, it's an internet cadence indicating shame and contrition.

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee · 06/12/2018 10:50

There is nothing to get. It's bollux and that's all there is to it. I'm reading the thread
as I'm curious if the OP will come back but not because I'm expecting a solution.

The 'as well' doesn't fit. Although a good idea.

The 'there is no answer' doesn't fit either.

It's 'a whole load of bollux' fits beautifully and that's because it IS a whole load of bollux.

The proof that it's a whole load of bollux is that the OP 'can't tell us' along with the rest of the 'story'

I admit to finding the thread interesting but I hope people aren't expecting to find an answer. It might be fun but it's completely pointless.

DailyMailShitheadNewspaper · 06/12/2018 10:56

I've just caught up on this thread @killingtime9198 are you for real?!

After all the comments and suggestions you post to say you've worked it out but you can't tell us?!

Seriously?!

Wow.

yesyesyep · 06/12/2018 11:31

Either OP has been a massive prick asking for help and then not sharing,

....OR (more probable)...

OP is a massive prick and is enjoying trolling us.

I certainly don't care for the answer, the thread is interesting, but only to see which type of prick the OP has been, and as time goes on, and no answer is produced, it's quite clear which one.

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 06/12/2018 11:42

Fwiw I found the hoo doo skit on previous thread far more amusing, and been annoying my dcs with it

I wonder if this is the answer - that the joke is its circular.

Arsehole (to borrow @Eliza9917 s terminology!): There once was a man called Boswell. For short they called him Bos, and he walked up the post office steps.

Victim: And?

Arsehole: There once was a man called Boswell. For short they called him Bos, and he walked up the post office steps.

Arsehole: There once was a man called Boswell. For short they called him Bos, and he walked up the post office steps.

It's no where near as good as the you remind of of the man/hoo doo circularity but it's a thought.

IknowTheBoswellJoke · 06/12/2018 11:44

There IS no joke, because the original statement about Bos isn't funny, it's not a joke. There is a solution, it involves the realisation that it is JUST a statement. There is literally NO ANSWER to be given to a statement.
If OP had simply started her post with only the Boswell bit, and nothing about needing to solve it, we'd not be here now, 3 days later, arguing over it.
The mystery only appears when we add in our belief that an answer exists. It doesn't.
Then, those who have had the joke explained can then be arseholes about it and be all vague and wink-wink-nudge about it.

It's like if I ran in asking for the spoon! I heard that it had been left here, we need to find it!!

You can look, but you won't find it. There is no spoon. The spoon only came about as a belief in its existence. Then, because I'm a wind up merchant, I start saying.."nope, not there....cold....colder!" Thus adding to the notion that a spoon is here, and you just need to really look and you will find it.

SylviaAndSydney · 06/12/2018 11:47

I’m getting strong Matrix vibes here...

IknowTheBoswellJoke · 06/12/2018 11:51

I feel like I've been living in another dimension with this whole Bos thing!

IamAporcupine · 06/12/2018 11:52

I feel the same! I just can't get it out of my head

(I'd promised myself I would not post again...)

SylviaAndSydney · 06/12/2018 11:53

I’m actually ashamed of myself the number of times I’ve read the updates Angry

IknowTheBoswellJoke · 06/12/2018 11:54

Yeah, I think I'm out.

Once you know, you know. Good luck everyone! Xx

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 06/12/2018 12:00

The most shocking and really pathetic part of all of this is that @killingtime9198 who started it because SHE was bothered by it for 20 YEARS came to ask for our collective help.

You only have to look at these too threads to see how many people have become interested in this and gave up their time to try to help her.

Now she knows the joke and gets it, she has refused to share it. Nasty and manipulative in my book - as well as childish and pathetic and of course hugely aggravating.
