I have just read forty pages of thread and it’s almost full! Let us congregate here for answers!

THERE IS REPEATED REFERENCE TO "GETTING A JOKE" AND "GOT IT". THAT DOES NOT FIT AT ALL WITH THE EXISTENTIALIST GARBAGE OF "THERE IS NO CORRECT ANSWER" BECAUSE THAT IS NOT A "JOKE".

Yes, but all that was before she "got" it though, she still thought it was a fucking joke then.

BoswellsLastStand · 06/12/2018 00:17

I'm so pissed off with this.

I've read it so much I think I could do a fucking PhD in an analysis of this thread, the various theories and why they are all wrong.

The only ones that are close to a joke are the "well"/"you know him as well" theories.

The "no joke/no correct answer" theories do not fit with most of what the OP posted about this on the first thread- including that it was known as the Boswell joke; a joke that some people "got"; someone worked most of it out but then was lead to the answer by the best friend; the joke was definitely not there was no joke and the consistent describing of it as a joke and not a riddle - including the "it is better in person".

BoswellsLastStand · 06/12/2018 00:19

Yes, but all that was before she "got" it though, she still thought it was a fucking joke then.

She stated on the first thread it is known in the friend's family as The Boswell Joke. Ergo It's a joke.

BoswellAndNotAndAFox · 06/12/2018 00:22

Maybe they're just sloppy.

SlowNorris · 06/12/2018 00:22

Just read page 8.

I can’t believe it.

I’m livid.

SlowNorris · 06/12/2018 00:32

Nobody needs this amount of stress in the run up to Christmas.

SylviaAndSydney · 06/12/2018 00:35

Exactly SlowNorris. OP of that thread needs hitting with the ban hammer.

Sunflowersforever · 06/12/2018 00:35

It's Thursday.

I'm going with 'I know him as well'.

I can sleep.

SlowNorris · 06/12/2018 00:38

Yeah, I’m going with that too and never returning to any thread with even a hint of Boswell on it.

Thank you, coolwalking.

jacadoodle · 06/12/2018 00:41

I THINK I MAY ACTUALLY HAVE CRACKED IT!

My offering above, works with a man or woman, the place isn't really relevant and would also explain why the OP could be told on her wedding day when she was tying the knot!

If you imagine someone spending years puzzling over it and when they eventually 'get it', the teller tells them that they couldn't give them the answer before due to their hands being tied, it's actually very funny.

masterstef · 06/12/2018 00:42

I'm out. The steaks are just too high!

I NEED MORE ABOUT BOS WELL - solve a riddle part two
happychange · 06/12/2018 00:44

Ohhh I get it now!!
It's because everyone knows him as Bos.. but you know him as Well!!

There once was a man called Boswell, and for short he was known as bos. And he walked up the post office steps as well.
And...?
Oh you know him as well, do you?

happychange · 06/12/2018 00:44

If you say it out as an exchange to someone else, it makes a lot more sense and I get the joke now!!

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 00:53

@happychange....its simpler than that but yes basically that is my theory.

There once was a man called Boswell, and for short he was known as bos. And he walked up the post office steps

You: I know him as Well

BlockRockinBeats · 06/12/2018 00:55

@IamAporcupine The more and more I think about it, the more your explanation is right. As you say, it is all circular. And look? People are tying themselves up in knots trying to see something that is not there.

'There is no answer' is THE answer. By saying that very phrase as 'the answer' you have nullified your original point, that there IS no answer.

BlockRockinBeats · 06/12/2018 00:57

@coolwalking Keep up! We has that explanation three days ago. This is why we are getting very frustrated.

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 01:01

@blockrockinbeats I had no idea sorry! I haven't read the full thread and as it wasn't listed in the big list of answers that is at the front of this thread I didn't think of it until earlier today.

Damn

BlockRockinBeats · 06/12/2018 01:05

@coolwalking I am so sorry for biting your head off. I really didn't mean to. I apologise. This thread is making me very snappy and I snapped at you. I didn't mean it. I am getting very frustrated with this thread and the op! So sorry x

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 01:06

@BlockRockinBeats No problem! I feel the same. Out of interest do you know if it was discounted by the OP? I feel we are all getting close....by yet so far

BlockRockinBeats · 06/12/2018 01:11

@coolwalking thank you for your understanding, this thread is making me very bad tempered after 3 days trying to guess? No, the OP has not come back to thread since her post today saying she 'has now got it, but she cannot tell us'. Sooooooo frustrating!!!! She waited 20 years for the answer, now she has it, but she won't tell us.

How disgusting is that? Bad form, I say. Is she a feminist? Well, if she is she should tell us.

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 01:13

@BlockRockinBeats It is bad form to leave us all hanging.....I think the thread got taken over by too many people saying there is no answer. That's when I lost interest but then I had my thought and wanted to share it.....Maybe when the UK wakes up more we will have a reponse, fingers and toes

BlockRockinBeats · 06/12/2018 01:18

@coolwalking I don't think the OP will come back I think all this interest will have overwhelmed her.

If she is a decent human, she will come back and explain the riddle, seeing as she now knows the answer. If she doesn't come back to explain then she is a shit house of the highest order. I wouldn't like to be her when karma comes round.

I hope we haven't been trolled. But I think we might have been. Urrgh. Karma.

SunnyTikka · 06/12/2018 01:26

My brain hurts.

Fucking Boswell.

DoJo · 06/12/2018 01:39

Assuming that any/all/some of the explanations on here are correct, what I don't understand is how any of the originators of this joke we're so pleased with themselves for coming up with it that they bothered repeating it, or why any of those who have subsequently heard it thought it was worth passing on. Assuming the OP didn't just make it up to be a dick, this has been doing the rounds for more than 20 years and it is utterly banal. The only interesting thing about it is the idea that anyone would bother, and even that is only interesting in hindsight- who has been perpetuating this whole turgid mess? Is anyone on here planning to share it?

BoswellAndNotAndAFox · 06/12/2018 01:53

@killingtime9198

  1. Is the "approaching" PO/library relevant?

  2. Do you KNOW that you and your friend have the same answer?
