I have just read forty pages of thread and it’s almost full! Let us congregate here for answers!

@mummy
The joke is on you for thinking there is an answer...
As soon as you realise there is no answer, that it is a dead end you get the joke...

But the OP in the original first post on the first thread was very clear that the joke was definitely NOT that there was no joke.

jacadoodle · 05/12/2018 23:42

Annoying person says:
There once was a manacled (man called) Boswell. For short they called him Bos, and he walked up the post office steps.

You say:
Yeah, and...

Annoying person says:

I can’t tell you, my hands are tied!

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 23:42

@coolwalking - so in your theory why they cannot tell you the answer?

coolwalking · 05/12/2018 23:43

@BoswellsLastStand i admit I haven't read the full threads.

I thought it was the story cut short theory until I read the OP update on this thread.

It's got to be do with the name. The walked up is the thing I can't figure out Hmm

coolwalking · 05/12/2018 23:44

@IamAporcupine because you don't know him as well.

You make the joke and you can't if you don't know him as Well.

MonsterTequila · 05/12/2018 23:44

Definitely four short 😂

BoswellsLastStand · 05/12/2018 23:44

@cherrysfortea
OK WHAT ABOUT THIS!!

There once was a man called Boswell, and for short he was known as bos. And he walked up the post office steps as well

I like this too. This and @coolwalking and the "and?/do you know him as well?"

all feel much closer to "a joke". It feels like the answer is nearly there but still just out of reach.

I think the "there is no correct answer" people are 100% wrong because it is not a riddle nor expressed as a riddle. There is no question. OP was very clear throughout that whole post it was A JOKE that she did not GET but her friend's husband later GOT IT.

Triskaidekaphilia · 05/12/2018 23:45

@coolwalking "I know him as Well" has got to be my new favourite answer, on its own it fits about the same as most other answers but its the can't say you know him until you know the answer that gives it the edge. I'm mostly thinking its a huge wind up/troll but if not then that's the best explanation.

BoswellsLastStand · 05/12/2018 23:54

I've just been looking at the first thread and OP posted:

killingtime9198 Mon 03-Dec-18 11:18:03

@Justanothernameonthepage - this is what I keep coming back to, and also the fact that it could potentially be written 'There once was a man called Bos. Well, for short they called him Bos' BUT my friend has written it out for me before and done it the way I originally wrote it above. Plus it is known as 'the Boswell joke'.

It is known as the Boswell JOKE - it's not a riddle with "no correct answer". It's a joke.

KandoKat · 05/12/2018 23:56

What a waste of time.
Fwiw I found the hoo doo skit on previous thread far more amusing, and been annoying my dcs with it Grin

PurpleRobe · 05/12/2018 23:58

Mummmy2017 OH has got it i think...

I say "There was a man, whose name was Boswell And for short they called him Bos. And he walked up the post office steps' '

You say "And?"
Or you might say "well?" (because you want me to finish the story.)

Then i say "you know him as 'Well' do you"
( because his name could be shortened to "Well"
Or his name could be shortened to "And " if his name is actually 'Boswell Andforshort' )

BoswellsLastStand · 05/12/2018 23:59

Also this TOTALLY does not fit with the "there is no answer" theory - otherwise why would it be better in person?

Better in person is more aligned with the @coolwalking and @cherrysfortea type theories

killingtime9198 Mon 03-Dec-18 14:03:21

Ok, I text her and asked her to write it out. She said 'I think it's better in person, but it is 'There was a man, whose name was boswell. And for short they called him bos. And he walked up the post office steps'

Dunnapoo · 06/12/2018 00:00

There is no answer as it’s not a question but you can work out the name of the person - i.e. he is called Andy Boswell.

There once was a man called Boswell, and for short he was known as bos. Andy (Andhe) walked up the post office steps

My thoughts and I’m going with that.

DerekTheWonderdog · 06/12/2018 00:02

I just typed the longest post but lost it to the WiFi god. Twat.

This won't be as wordy but I'll try and get to the essence.

Disclaimer: I am not and have never been the OP.

There is no riddle and there is no answer. There's no big secret. Th

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 00:03

The key to these things is to keep it simple.

All the Andy and putting all the words together don't make it funny. The op has said that there are no punctuation changes to complete the joke.

I would bet $1 that it's "I know him as Well" I think I would get very good odds Grin

Dunnapoo · 06/12/2018 00:03

Also works if a woman

There was......... Andshe (Angie) approached the library

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 00:04

@DerekTheWonderdog to confirm, you are in the "there is no answer group"?

londonmummy1966 · 06/12/2018 00:07

I think that the OP is a PR person for the Royal Mail and is encouraging us to think about posting our Christmas cards.... In which case MNHQ should ban them....

SlowNorris · 06/12/2018 00:09

Is today the big reveal?

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 00:10

@SlowNorris there will be no reveal as the OP has chosen to not share the joke.

You need to figure it out yourself.

A few interesting theories are below

SylviaAndSydney · 06/12/2018 00:10

OP of the other thread updated on here hours ago.

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 00:11

Seriously the OP just needs to come back to stop this.

I'm addicted to Boswell

IamAporcupine · 06/12/2018 00:11

Glad you are back @DerekTheWonderdog

I think this thread is actually very interesting, and I agree with what you said the other day re. working out how to make this into a business

LarkDescending · 06/12/2018 00:12

After two long threads I was hoping to find All’s Well That Ends Well, but I fear it may be Much Ado About Nothing.

SylviaAndSydney · 06/12/2018 00:13

What’s the business? Boswell’s Bullshit? 🐂
