I have just read forty pages of thread and it’s almost full! Let us congregate here for answers!

It's well funny

CasanovaFrankenstein · 05/12/2018 14:27

Hmmm, this isn’t a brick joke is it?

egginacup · 05/12/2018 14:29

Porcupine, the whole “I can’t tell you why” doesn’t work as an answer though, as the joke/riddle whatever it is isn’t phrased as a question.

Omgineedanamechange · 05/12/2018 14:30

I think porcupine is right, and derek and op are twats for not confirming it.

downcomesBos · 05/12/2018 14:34

I don't think porcupine is right

I think the "I can't tell you" (the answer to the joke) is synonymous to the "I can't tell you why he walked up the stairs to the post office"

DeRigueurMortis · 05/12/2018 14:36

It's all about making people feel better about themselves by being members of the Boseratti - Mensa is sooooo yesterday.

Zebraantelopegiraffe · 05/12/2018 14:37

Well, my family are way funnier than Boswells family and thier shit joke.

Bexyboo2207 · 05/12/2018 14:37

IamAporcupine - Could you just confirm if my theory was totally incorrect then? Everything fits, makes sense, there is no answer because there's no questions, it's just a short story, but instead of giving the answer I was meant to keep quiet and play along?? (I'm far too invested in this now!)

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 14:41

egginacup

I am not saying that “I can’t tell you why” is the answer.

I say that the joke/riddle does not have an answer/solution.

That's why the OP could not tell us the answer (because there isn't one)

PeterRabbitsBlueCoat · 05/12/2018 14:41

In the OP, killingtime specifically says that the joke is NOT that there is no joke.

Just putting that out there.

Huntlybyelection · 05/12/2018 14:48

How do you know you know the answer?

(For clarity: I do not know the answer. I'm just wondering how those who say they know actually confirm it when anyone who does know cannot say if someone has it right or Not?)

TellItLikeItReallyIs · 05/12/2018 14:49

This is a disgraceful and offensive abuse of all of our time.

@BlockRockinBeats

I think I might have got it.

The teller says, 'There once was a man called Boswell. For short they called him Bos, and he walked up the post office steps.'

The listener, in their confusion at the nonsensical riddle, asks, "Well?" (Meaning, so? Is that it?)

The teller says, "I really can't tell you?" (Meaning...I can't tell you if Bos walked up the PO steps 'well' (ie properly) or not, because I don't know)

It is a play on the word 'Well'. The listener asks 'Well?' meaning 'Tell me more." The teller takes this to mean 'Did he do it well?' and so answers "I can't tell you." (Because they don't know if he walked well or not).

That is why the answer will always be 'I can't tell you." because they really don't know how well he climbed the steps.

This has got to be it, surely? If this IS IT, it is SHIT

This is the most plausible answer I've read on here. It is indeed absolutely shit.

It also fails to explain why @Killingtime @Derek et al couldn't explain it. Obviously they can explain it but are chosing not to. Idiots all of them.

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 14:50

Also, she said none of the theories on post 2 of this thread are correct, and one of the theories given was "Mornington Crescent" ie there is no joke.

And Derek said it was funny and there is an answer Confused

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 14:52

@Bexyboo2207 - I'd say that is not correct (although I don't fully remember which one it was)

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 14:52

Oh well it's not post two but it's on page one.

KittensAndChristmasCake · 05/12/2018 14:55

Even the OP, when she "worked it out" didn't even check Derek's answer so in reality neither of them knows 100% if the other has the right answer

Unless, as already said, they are the same person.

And Derek said it was funny and there is an answer

To be fair, if you read his posts, Derek talks in riddles all the time so would find it funny 🤣

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 14:58

Killingtime said:

"I will tell you that none of the theories in the long post towards the top of this thread listing the various theories is correct. However, one or two people in the thread HAVE got it. I'm not sure whether Derek is one of them and I can't message to find out as one of us would clearly have to show our hand to find out if the other one has got it. PLUS I imagine Derek will think this is an elaborate ruse for me to get them to tell me the answer.

I AM TRULY SORRY. But please do remember this has been plaguing me for over 20 years before you throw stones at me."

So in fact she isn't sure Derek has got it without speaking to her.

I do wish someone would say what it was which made them find the answer, though.

BertieBotts · 05/12/2018 14:58

Derek is a she, and I don't think she is killingtime.

malpa · 05/12/2018 15:07

"There is no answer."

Well...

killingtime's initial post:
The joke is definitely NOT that there is no joke, and they're all having a laugh at me for trying to work it out - I am 100% confident of this.

killingtime's subsequent posts:
There is definitely something to 'get' - my friend is absolutely insistent on this - I have known her over 20 years and I know when she is lying. Similarly, her husband did not 'get' it originally and we used to moan to each-other about it whenever we remembered it existed! He subsequently got it, but they refuse to tell me on the basis that you have to work it out for yourself.

I know my background reassurances on there actually being a joke/the joke being on me won't count for much, but I am honestly 100% sure that is not the joke. There are members of her family who still don't get it, and nobody will tell them either!

I know that another friend at school got PART of it, or 'almost' got it, and then my friend basically lead her to the answer.

killingtime's final post:
The BAD news is.....I really can't tell you the answer.

All of the above throws the "there is no answer" answer out of the window and up the post office steps... unless we're all being trolled.

Bexyboo2207 · 05/12/2018 15:17

If several posters have said there's been clues in previous posts, or a certain post has lead them to 'get it'. Please tell us which posts these are? I was convinced my theory was correct, everything fitted and made sense and therefore I wanted to share it. If you finally 'get it' human nature is to tell people you know, and everyone to say 'ooo thanks for putting me out of my misery' so it makes no sense that no-one is willing to explain it?

Eliza9917 · 05/12/2018 15:35

Arsehole: There once was a man called Boswell. For short they called him Bos, and he walked up the post office steps.'

Victim: Why

Arsehole: I can't tell you Meaning they don't know.

IamAporcupine · 05/12/2018 15:35

malpa I don't agree.

The 'there is no (correct) answer' answer is not the same as 'there is no joke/riddle', there is still something to 'get'.

As per killingtime's final post: The BAD news is.....I really can't tell you the answer.

I think she was actually being a bit mean there, of course she could have told us.

Thisimmortalcurl · 05/12/2018 15:38

Why would anyone do that ?
Put a riddle, ask everyone to help try to work it out , subsequently work it out themselves and then fuck everyone else that they have involved in helping them over by not telling them the answer.
Original op of the first thread .. you are behaving like a dick or are on the total wind up imo.

BackstreetsBackAlright · 05/12/2018 15:39

But in order to ‘get’ something, surely it’s got to be understandable?! This just DOESN’T MAKE SENSE and no intelligent person could agree that the solution is that there is no answer/it can’t be told. Not one person here could say ‘that’s it, I’ve got it!’...
