This year my heart was broken by Toys "R" Us closing, just wondered what other shops that have closed do you miss?
This year we've had maplins, BHS I believe was this year, Mothercare will all be gone by next year summer too.
As a teen I used to love Bay Trading, and a shop called Tammy Girl.

We've still got HMV and Peacocks; Peacocks stocks Jane Norman clothes as well.

MissCharleyP · 02/12/2018 16:40

Fopp is still going in Manchester & Edinburgh.

I miss: Kew, MVC, Zavvi, C&A. Those cheap independent clothes shops that everywhere had when I was a teen. One indie I miss is Lovejoys on Charing Cross Road - had loads of sitcoms and films that you just never saw anywhere else.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 02/12/2018 16:40

Oh yes, Athena.

LordBuckley · 02/12/2018 16:47

I was in a European C&A yesterday, and it's still pretty good.

Somtamthai · 02/12/2018 16:55

Woolies, still miss it.

Like an earlier poster, I miss the way ships used to be. I loved a Saturday wandering around body shop, hmv, game, New look etc. Shops are boring and uninspiring these days.

McSnuff · 02/12/2018 16:56

East! I loved that shop. Bought a load of stuff in the sale last Christmas, just as well really. Where do I go now for a cotton skirt and lovely linen tops?

Bagadverts · 02/12/2018 16:56

Bhs
Tammy girl
Borders

I'd really miss Thornton's if it's real stores close.

brizzledrizzle · 02/12/2018 16:58

Apropos of not much, my brother teaches at a school near where the woman in the Athena tennis poster lived.

BoooForYou · 02/12/2018 16:58

Woolies, especially at Christmas.
I think B&M try to fill the gap but it's not the same.

I miss Our Price as well because I spent most of my teens in my local one.

Kaybush · 02/12/2018 16:59

The only one I can really say I miss is Habitat. The one in the centre of our city was such a great place to visit if we were in town. Even if you didn't buy anything, it was always inspiring to see the room sets they'd created.

A smaller version reopened in town last month but I have a feeling it's just a way of off-loading old stock, as it looks a bit cobbled together.

HRTpatch · 02/12/2018 17:00

Richards, Principles and Wallis

JaceLancs · 02/12/2018 17:00

John Menzies

WTFIsAGleepglorp · 02/12/2018 17:01

Woolworths, BHS, Richard Shops and Our Price.

Jux · 02/12/2018 17:01

Another one who misses Woolworths! One of the last purchases I made there was of a couple of plastic waste paper baskets for 79p each. We now suffer The Factory Shop, which doesn't usually have wste baskets at all, and when it does they're leather-lined and cost £7+ Shock

Kaybush · 02/12/2018 17:01

Oh gosh and Borders too (just been reminded by a PP)!

I think both Borders and Habitat probably had more browsers than buyers on a daily basis unfortunately.

BoooForYou · 02/12/2018 17:04

Oh and Kookai
I had a cardigan from there with tiny buttons I wore with only a bralet underneath (wouldn't get away with that now, I need scaffold these days).
Was my never fails pulling top. Used to leave the bottom buttons undone, like Billie Piper, enough to show off my pre-children stomach and my Bow Bangles purchased Belly chain

woollyheart · 02/12/2018 17:07

I am sad that I never went to a Kew or Pier shop. They sound great!

Kaybush · 02/12/2018 17:08

Oh and of course the huge original Biba on Kensington High Street!! I spent a couple of birthdays there with my sister and parents. You could spend hours and hours in there and then finish by eating in the top floor Rainbow restaurant or even their roof garden restaurant.

pearlkent · 02/12/2018 17:08

Habitat was fantastic in the late 70s and 80s. I still have stuff I bought there.

Also, Miss Selfridge in that era was brilliant, especially their make-up in the white packaging with pink writing. It was all so glittery but in a sheeny frosty way, and amazing colours. You can still spot it on the faces of pop stars in old TOTP shows.
Just trying to remember some of the names for the eyeshadows and lipsticks...might have to srat another thread in S&B.

For the Irish MNetters, I would have to say Roches Stores and Quinsworth.

Roches was bought out by Debenhams and Quinsworth by Tesco, and in my opinion, neither of the replacements come close to what the predecessors offered.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 02/12/2018 17:17

Store 21.

SerenDippitty · 02/12/2018 17:20

I remember when BHS had a food hall it was great.

Yummytummy123 · 02/12/2018 17:26

La senza!!!! Absolutely adored that shop and there just isn't anything similar. Miss it so much. The scented beads and wrapping each thing was so fancy at the time

WatchingTheWheels85 · 02/12/2018 17:28

My Christmas tree is from woolworths! I bought it 10 years ago for £8 in the closing down sale (excuse the decorations the children do it every year)Grin
