This year my heart was broken by Toys "R" Us closing, just wondered what other shops that have closed do you miss?
This year we've had maplins, BHS I believe was this year, Mothercare will all be gone by next year summer too.
As a teen I used to love Bay Trading, and a shop called Tammy Girl.

Woolworths!

Also fond memories of Tammy Girl

NameChanger22 · 02/12/2018 15:50

We used to have 2 Monsoon shops. Now we don't have any due to closures. I really miss it.

LadyPasserine · 02/12/2018 15:51

Mark my words M&S will be gone within three years. No direction, stuck in the middle, can't decide between clothes and food, both ranges are over engineered and not what consumers want. But management just cannot see it. They will shift over to food, downsize unsuccessfully and be taken over within three years.

6triesbuttingout · 02/12/2018 15:52

C&a
Etam
Biba
Bhs

Juanmorebeer · 02/12/2018 15:57

I miss Borders bookshop. I think the following stores will go soon: Debenhams, HOF, Thorntons, Miss Selfridge, Oasis (are they only concessions already?) , schuh, HMV.

londonmummy1966 · 02/12/2018 15:59

@AimlesslyPurposeful @easyandy101 wouldn't anything be an improvement on the Whitgift and Centrale now - every time I go in something else has closed and all the new shops are the £5 for anything tat clothes stores. Sad. I'd love to see John Lewis take over the Allders site as it was such a beautiful building.

I'm another who really misses Kew but Wilco dies seem to have filled the Woolies gap and I find Zara home a good substitute for Pier.

snowflakealert · 02/12/2018 16:00

Woolworths, especially at this time of year. There aren't any other shops that get anywhere near all the Christmas stuff they did Sad

Loved Snob!

Huge coincidence this thread started and i had just been in town with DH and DD and we both commented on how almost pointless it is because theres f all there! Our local M&S has just shut its doors! I think what i miss is not the shops or what they sold but the memories;
I miss;
Woolworths - for EVERYTHING! It was the best. Pick n mix, the tiny cans of pop, random electricals. When i was in year 7, a girl was practically worshipped because she stole some pick n mix and got caught by the security and let off with a warning.

Bay trading - all my sixth form going out clothes were from there. I STILL have a top from there that i wore 11 years ago for my 1st date with DH.

BHS - the xmas gift sets, bras and the home stuff was the absolute best.

MK one - i lost my virginity in a very skanky bra and pants set from there...ahhh the skanky memories of being 17 lol (the clothes were awesome, once again i wore them all through 6th form, that 30 quid EMA money used to mean id always get a new top every friday lol)

Pier - just when i got old enough to earn enough...fuckin closes down.

Music stores - there was always something cool about going to get a tape/CD, listening to the charts and it was always a place for groups of girls to steal glances at the boys and vice versa...all so innocent and too shy to talk...now teens tend to 'send nudes' as a way of flirting lol

Adams - because i have a baby and i realise that aside from mothercare (closing down anyway), and mamas and papas, there are no baby and child only clothing stores in abundance. Jojo maman bebe have very very few actual stores and its mainly online.

Habitat

Muddledupme · 02/12/2018 16:14

I loved freeman hardy Willis.

AimlesslyPurposeful · 02/12/2018 16:18

@londonmummy1966 @easyandy101

The plan is to demolish Whitgift next September so I guess shops aren’t renewing their leases.
There are compulsory purchase orders on surrounding buildings - it’s going to be a commercial ghost town before too long.

Westfield aiming to open its doors in 2023.

VisitorsEntrance · 02/12/2018 16:20

Last time I went there was still an Athena in Yeovil.

I think it went about 5 years ago.

Fopp is still open in Cambridge.

Wilkos has taken over the gap left by Woolies.

Toys R Us was soulless.

I agree with a PP that I miss what the Body Shop used to be.

fluffiphlox · 02/12/2018 16:21

The Next of the 1980s. Decent tailoring and workwear. Not the current limp, throwaway, synthetic tat.

Flibbitygibbit · 02/12/2018 16:23

I worked in Ravel im the 1980s... first job. I loved that job. Good times and great shoes.

mswilliamnot · 02/12/2018 16:24

Tammy girl, BHS and most definitely Allders!

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 02/12/2018 16:25

Ooo I've just remembered another.

Whittards. I absolutely loved that shop.
They did the most amazing fruit teas, hot chocolates and coffees.
Plus the cups were gorgeous.
Sad

VisitorsEntrance · 02/12/2018 16:28

Whitards is still going.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/12/2018 16:31

Whittards closed a number of their shops, but they are still going. I have just been in the one in Birmingham.

londonmummy1966 · 02/12/2018 16:31

@AimlesslyPurposeful - that sounds pretty grim

MrsCar · 02/12/2018 16:32

I had no idea that some of these were gone Blush

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 02/12/2018 16:35

Definitely Woolies, but the older one not how it was in the few years before it closed.

GabsAlot · 02/12/2018 16:36

hmv survived in oiur town m and s didnt

no way disney still will close theyre still massive

i had a lovely outfit from jane norman when i was slimmer

Birdsgottafly · 02/12/2018 16:36

Woolworths, Toys R Us and Ethel Austin.

I miss TJHughes as it was.

We had a shop in Liverpool called Taylor, it sold everything. It was a massive discount shop like B and M but better.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 02/12/2018 16:37

Oh and Athena, but just saw above there is still one around! And the Body Shop of the late '80s/early '90s.
