Does your manager get you a gift a Christmas?

Just wondering if anybody gets a Christmas gift from their (very well paid) manager? I go above and beyond and have saved managers arse so many times....never get a thing. Maybe he should get me a mug, cuz that’s what I am!

My friend used to get rather large amounts of vouchers from her boss (think nearly £100) and then moan about how she doesn't agree with children buying teachers' presents! Never got anything off a manager, but have had some gorgeous handmade cards and things and once a pencil case made from an old school shirt from a child who had a very crafty granny that I was always complimenting her knit and crochet projects. They were a family that didn't have much to spare and it was the most thoughtful gift! I usually get my children a present though - in summer it's books, at Christmas it's usually a pencil/ruler/rubber set thingy. Oh and my TA .

DrMadelineMaxwell · 01/12/2018 19:21

Mine buys us all our £3 school canteen Christmas dinner.

TokyoSushi · 01/12/2018 19:25

We get a bottle of Prosecco, they have to pay out of their own money so it's a nice thought

Amaaboutthis · 01/12/2018 19:27

I’ve a team of 20 and have bought them all a very small token gift. I’ve 3 direct reports and I’ll get them something a bit bigger too.

@BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou
Worst "My husband is so important" reply ever!

Sorry if that’s how it came across. It wasn’t meant to. He isn’t important... he manages a large team but if he was “important” he’d probably be paid enough to buy them all gifts!

Galvantula · 01/12/2018 19:40

They might chuck a box of biscuits/sweets in for the team to share if we're lucky.

Angrybird345 · 01/12/2018 19:41

I think it’s great that there are some nice guys out there! I’m not after theatre tickets or fine champagne, but even a box of chocs would be nice. He’s only got theee people to buy for, though the other two are useless. It would make a huge difference.

I'm a midday supervisor and get a box of chocs at Christmas and end of school year and an Easter egg for Easter. It really does make me feel appreciated! It doesn't seem like much, but that bit of thought means so much to me Smile

claracluck78 · 01/12/2018 19:47

My old boss used to surprise me with home made hampers of things I had mentioned over the year - I had gin boxes (before the current fad!) with a bottle and nice tonics and nibbles; jo malone; interesting books etc

My current boss gives me a decent bonus. To be honest I love the cash but sometimes I miss the surprise of opening a proper pressie.

ASauvignonADay · 01/12/2018 19:49

Yes! Work in education and we always get a bottle of wine and a thoughtful card. I know everyone really appreciates it.

ShotsFired · 01/12/2018 19:53

I usually get a gift set of shower gel/hand cream etc.

But I also get a really lovely card with a personal message of thanks for my work in the year. I value that much more highly (along with 2 unexpected pay rises and continued support all year long)

HollyBollyBooBoo · 01/12/2018 19:54

Yes he's incredibly generous and goes out of his way to find something artisanal & bespoke. It's really appreciated .

ShotsFired · 01/12/2018 19:55

GrinGrinGrin @Itsyersel yes, that 100 people humblebrag was only seconded by hollahollas very average salary faux-boast!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 01/12/2018 19:59

Mine did last year which was nice. But I’m his sole report and we get on as friends not just as colleagues. I haven’t ever had anything from any other manager.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 01/12/2018 20:06

Actually... I honestly don’t get how having a team of 100 people is a humble brag. A friend of mine is the manager of a supermarket (four letter foreign sounding name), he has more than 100 people that he “manages” is he “important”.

I USED to have a job where I had my own secretary so I only managed one person but having a secretary is considered a brag in MN world maybe.... I wasn’t important....I was an EA but in a fairly small company.... (yes I did buy her a small gift at Christmas).

Blanchedupetitpois · 01/12/2018 20:07

Mine does

SabineUndine · 01/12/2018 20:15

Nope. My manager treats us with contempt and we loathe her.

theworldistoosmall · 01/12/2018 20:16

One of my ex-managers had over 100 under him. Yes, he had a couple of assistants and a that. But ultimately it was him that made a lot of the decisions.
It was the thought that counted. He went and bought share bags of sweets and chocolates and gave us some of those. It was cheap yes because let's face it to buy us all something it would have cost a fortune. But it was the simple acknowledgement that counted.

He would also buy large tubs of chocolate for us all to share. Again, the little things.

ILovePierceBrosnan · 01/12/2018 20:16

I think BuggerOff’s statement about 100 employees gives context not a brag.

I buy for my team. Always have done. My boss who earns 4 times what I do bought a poinsettia to share between two of us one year (10 yrs ago...) and nothing since

ShotsFired · 01/12/2018 20:17

Bugger it was the amusing way you phrased it, not the concept of having reports itself. It sounded like you were shoehorning in the 100 reports just to show how Very Important he must be.

Like, "oh my diamond shoes are awfully uncomfortable!"

Foamybanana93 · 01/12/2018 20:18

My old manager last year surprised me with a huge bottle of baileys for Christmas after discussing what we like to drink over Christmas, she also got some of the other girls little gifts aswell like little Chanel nail varnish etc she was lush, best manager I’ve ever had Grin

CombineBananaFister · 01/12/2018 20:21

All minimum wage and manager not on much more but still buys us all an adventure calender which is super cheap but thoughtful and lovely. Maybe because it's retail and they appreciate the horrendous xmas period for us Grin

Beach11 · 01/12/2018 20:22

When I worked in the private sector I always received a amazing gift and the staff we club together to buy the manager a hamper or similar.
Now in public sector, no. We buy a gift for each Pearson in the team, 4 of us.

Beach11 · 01/12/2018 20:22

*person

SauvignonBlanche · 01/12/2018 20:27

I’d love to buy gifts for my team, I know the person who previously mangaged the team used to, as well as Easter eggs.
Sadly I can’t afford to, there’s 36 of them and, as I’m the sole wage earner, I couldn’t afford any more than a pound each and there’s not a lot you can get for that.
I’d hate people to think I don’t appreciate then because of this. Sad
