Does your manager get you a gift a Christmas?

Just wondering if anybody gets a Christmas gift from their (very well paid) manager? I go above and beyond and have saved managers arse so many times....never get a thing. Maybe he should get me a mug, cuz that’s what I am!

Actually wouldn’t know who any of them are.. even if they did present a present..

YoThePussy · 01/12/2018 18:27

I had one job where much to my amazement I was given a present by my manager and the head of department gave me one too. Just little presents, a little houseplant and chocolates. I was so pleased and made sure they always got a present from me in future years. Delicate Mumsnetters cover your eyes, I gave them homemade presents! I have a lovely recipe for very boozy truffles and always made lots for friends.

The company got bigger and more impersonal. I had a horrible manager and no one then gave presents apart from Secret Santa ones. I saved my presents for those who deserved them.

Lwmommy · 01/12/2018 18:27

I manage 16 people, its hard, i do get gifts for everyone and want them to be nice, not cheap and risking being insulting or crap but not easy to get much decent for less than £10 each so £160 which is a huge dent in my xmas budget.

TheBitterBoy · 01/12/2018 18:27

My manager usually gets me a bottle of wine at Christmas and a Lindt bunny at Easter. He's not a very sociable person, never attends the work Christmas do, and usually just leaves the gift on my desk, I always thank him but can tell he'd rather I didn't acknowledge it at all! He's good to work for generally though. I appreciate it, but don't expect it.

Haffdonga · 01/12/2018 18:27

I always get one from my lovely manager and get one for my team members.

Question: i have invited my team for a Christmas meal after our next ,meeting. Is it mean to invite them and then expect them to pay for themselves? I could buy a round of drinks but with some muslims and some drivers it definitely wont be a boozy affair,

What would you expect?

AloneLonelyLoner · 01/12/2018 18:30

I’m really glad I saw this and will buy pressies for my two guys on Monday! I refuse to be a wanker boss!

hidinginthenightgarden · 01/12/2018 18:33

Mine does. Wine the first few years but has been skint since she married an utter moron. I didn't expect anything last year (or this year) since she was on the bones of her arse but she baked and decorated cookies for us all. Without wanting to be cruel - I hope she doesn't this year!

MiniMaxi · 01/12/2018 18:33

Yes, buys everyone in the team a bottle of wine (or chocs if they don’t drink)

MsSquiz · 01/12/2018 18:34

My last manager would get us all an advent calendar and a bottle of wine each (team of 6) all out of her own pocket.

My current boss is my husband and I'm pretty certain he's getting me something for Christmas

Kelsoooo · 01/12/2018 18:34

Nope, we get a generic card through the mail from the CEO.

I'd not expect anything.

At random intervals in the year the the company will send out a care box of kinds, with products from our clients in. And pens.(I swear that's everyone's favourite part)

And whenever we have a day with the boss they buy lunch and coffee which they then expense, roughly once a month.

But we're field based so it's different I guess.

If I was invited out by the boss for a meal after a meeting....I'd expect it to be paid for tbh

MargotSimpson · 01/12/2018 18:40

I buy small gifts for my team, mini bottle of Prosecco and chocs last year. Lindt bunnies at Easter.

SweetLathyrus · 01/12/2018 18:41

Ha, ha, ha!

No.

HollaHolla · 01/12/2018 18:42

I’m on a very average salary (£40k ish) and have a team of almost 35. I buy a small gift for each of them - got them today at about £3 each. It’s not much, but it’s from my own money. I don’t expect anything from my team, but I’ve had chocolates, wine, gloves; lovely, kind things, which they didn’t have to give me. Very much appreciated.

I’ve never had a gift from my current manager. She’s the only one I’ve never had a gift from - all my other managers have given us something. She has 3 direct reports, so wouldn’t break the bank!

Haisuli · 01/12/2018 18:42

Yes. I have two jobs. I work for a small business, just.me and the two owners of the business. Been there four years and every year they have given me £100 in a card. I nearly fell off my chair the first time after years in public services with absolutely zilch. I also have an extra little retail job and my department manager always buys us all a box of chocolates or a little bottle.pf prosesscco. It is massively appreciated as he has a good few members of staff and he won't be on a huge wage himself. ❤️. I tend to get a box of biscuits for the office and a tub of chocs for the shop to keep us going through the hard Christmas shifts

ChodeofChodeHall · 01/12/2018 18:43

My current job is the first one I've had where I don't get a present (or even a card) from my manager. I don't really mind too much, as he is an absolute joy to work for and I love him to pieces.

In my department all the managers buy a little gift at Christmas (bottle of wine etc) and our director buys them one. We also do a secret Santa, we’re all over Christmas in my team Grin

XiCi · 01/12/2018 18:44

Manager pays for our xmas meal on our night out and we club together to get him a nice gift.
BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou your DH wouldnt be expected to buy a present for everyone below his pay grade just for his management team directly below him which I'm sure isn't 200 people.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 01/12/2018 18:46

No. Although the other team managers in our department buy for their teams; so I think it's just down to personal preference, and it could be expensed back within reason if he did.

MissingCalifornia · 01/12/2018 18:46

Mine probably wouldn’t even wish me a merry Christmas!

explodingkittensexpansion · 01/12/2018 18:47

Yes, costs over £1000 plus with paying for nights out/meals it probably tops £2k a year. There are about 20 of them.

tinselfest · 01/12/2018 18:47

Over the years at various places I've had chocolates, wine, John Lewis gift cards and a silver bracelet. The last two years have been a hamper.

Julianaa · 01/12/2018 18:48

I buy my team a bottle of wine each at Christmas with a card and in the summer I do a breakfast for them with pastries, fresh OJ, fruit kebabs, smoked salmon sandwiches, and nice coffee and give them a small gift like a box of chocolates each, with a thank you card. I bring in small treats during the year like nice biscuits as there is nothing like that provided by our employer.

My boss buys me a gift at Christmas. Last year it was some nice toiletries and the year before it was a winter scarf.

Nononononono33 · 01/12/2018 18:48

Yes. Our senior manager buys us (four in the team) some nice chocolates at Christmas. I appreciate the thought far more than the actual gift. DH has a team of three and also buys them small gifts such (I am very good at helping to find nice inexpensive, generic gifts). Totally understand that if a manager has a large team this may not be possible though.

treaclesoda · 01/12/2018 18:49

Only on mumsnet would someone say that 40k is a very average salary. Grin
