Does your manager get you a gift a Christmas?

Just wondering if anybody gets a Christmas gift from their (very well paid) manager? I go above and beyond and have saved managers arse so many times....never get a thing. Maybe he should get me a mug, cuz that’s what I am!

Yep and our manager isn’t that well paid. She even got me a present when I was a temp. However we do work very closely together and we are a small team.

theworldistoosmall · 01/12/2018 18:50

Yes apart from my last one.
One before was great. Not only did he give something at Christmas for those that he thought went above and beyond, but he would also give random gifts throughout the year. It wasn't spiel either as a few rubberneckers would constantly moan that he never got them anything, unlike X, although not sure how many of us he gave to as the rest never said anything. One even put him on the spot one year about his lack of generosity.

Eilaianne · 01/12/2018 18:52

No, nothing. Mine manages about 40 people so not viable.

Same for me.

weebarra · 01/12/2018 18:52

I'd love to, but I'm a part/time public sector manager and am not on a great wage. They probably earn more than me. I bought them all a drink at our night out and I'll buy them a malteaser reindeer. I do frequently tell them what a great job they do.

poppy196 · 01/12/2018 18:52

Not so much Christmas gifts but on February 14 th we all had a chocolate rose and Easter we had an egg and Halloween a pumpkin each 🎃 and sweets all left on our work tables for us to find in the morning.
Oh and had a Cadbury's advent Calendar the other day .
Impressed as we have 50 + staff so lots of thought put into it .

Hollyboots · 01/12/2018 18:54

We do an office Secret Santa, I wouldn't expect my manager to get us all a gift (department of 12)

treaclesoda · 01/12/2018 18:56

Oh, I've just remembered that I lied in my earlier post. I said I'd never had a present from a manager but I've just remembered that I did once. It was appreciated but he was utterly incompetent as a manager, and I'd rather have a decent manager on a day to day basis than a sexist arse hole (he was one of those men who pretended that he actually couldn't hear women speak, and and then when a man repeated what a woman had said he gushed about what a great idea it was and why had no one thought of it) who bought a present. I

Ffsnosexallowed · 01/12/2018 18:56

Last year she left a bag of chocolate decorations in the main office and told us all to take one. I didn't drive to the office, pay to park and waste an hour of my time to pick mine up.

CoughCoughSneeze · 01/12/2018 18:57

Yes, my manager gives me a very generous present. Last year, it was a bottle of gin and a £100 restaurant voucher.
I get her something to similar value.

I manage a team of 5. I get them a little Molton Brown giftset, and a bottle of prosecco. They usually give me chocolates or wine, but I don’t expect it.

UserMe18 · 01/12/2018 19:00

My manager gets me chocolate, I buy my team something, this year a candle and chocolate (each, obviously lol).

motherstongue · 01/12/2018 19:02

I work for a small family business and they give each employee a £50 gift voucher for their Christmas. They also have a Christmas dinner that is paid for in full including all drinks and travel to and from the venue. There's about 25 staff and about 10 casual staff in total. I think they are generous at Christmas.

Violetroselily · 01/12/2018 19:03

I've had chocolates or a bottle from my last few managers

Villanellesproudmum · 01/12/2018 19:04

My boss and I exchange gifts. She buys all her team gifts.

Andro · 01/12/2018 19:05

I get each of my direct reports a gift, usually a gift card for their favourite shop/spa/salon except for my EA who receives significantly more (without him my work life would not run).

I usually receive a case of wine from the board (who I report to directly, I don't have one direct boss).

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/12/2018 19:05

We used to. Previous managers always bought us all a bottle of wine. One manager even remembered that I don't drink and bought me chocolate, which was great!

My current manager has 2 small children and his wife is a student so money is much tighter for him and he doesn't buy us Christmas gifts. he doesn't really continue to bringing food for sharing like the rest of us either, but he does eat it

bimbobaggins · 01/12/2018 19:09

Yes , I exchange gifts with my manager but my boss wouldn’t even say merry Christmas never mind a gift

halfwitpicker · 01/12/2018 19:10

Not sure he knows who I am really 🤔

TrippingTheVelvet · 01/12/2018 19:11

My last workplace tried to force us into buying staff presents. One single, life-revolves-around-work manager bought their 5 staff Jo Malone candles. I on the other hand had 15 staff and was the only earner in the house. Mine got a box of chocolate each. It cost me the best part of eighty quid that I couldn't really afford and my staff thought I was a bitch in comparison. It was the shortest job I have ever been in and one of the few times I ever caved to peer pressure.

Gingefringe · 01/12/2018 19:13

I used to get £200 in cash in an Xmas card every year from one of my old bosses, then in the job after that used to get a bottle of wine and chocolates. I work in the public sector now so no chance of a gift or bonus!

Tiredmum100 · 01/12/2018 19:14

Nope, nothing. But I do work for the NHS.

bringbackthestripes · 01/12/2018 19:15

Yep. My manager gets me a gift..... I work really, really part time and feel obliged to reciprocate. I wish my manager wouldn’t get me a gift. I now spend more on my manager than I do on some family members.

Manager is retiring in the new year, second in command is moving into managers position...I’m already panicking that the tradition is going to continue.

Not really - anyone who directly manages so many people must have a really shit job Grin

daisypond · 01/12/2018 19:16

No, never. I work for a private company. As I'm working Christmas Day there may be a box of chocs provided (by the senior leadership team) for everyone to share who is in on Christmas Day.

KeepCalm · 01/12/2018 19:18

I take all of mine out for christmas night and buy those of age a bottle of fizz and those younger or teetotal a cinema voucher.

We're a small business with 16 staff so it's not a great gift but it's what I can afford & hope it's appreciated for all they do.

I've only had a gift in return once so maybe am a shite boss lol It was a pleasant surprise though as I never expect anything Smile

Ivgotasecretcanyoukeepit · 01/12/2018 19:18

Yes I always receive gifts from my manager and above but I always buy for my own staff.

Normally Jo Malone perfume and candles in their Christmas boxes or Aqua di Parma gift sets for the men.
