To wish Christmas Ceiling Garlands/Chains would become trendy again!?!

We have some unopened shiny ceiling decorations, I won't put them up because I want to fit in with the modern look (don't flame me!) but so wish these were trendy again! That was the magic of Christmas for me, the ceiling all colourful and lower with stars spinning round when you passed under them! I'm 33.

Now they are classed as 'tacky'! It's a shame they won't be a memory for our generation of kids!

Now unicorn, rainbow and oil slick colours are a trend again, can we hope for a beautiful tacky Christmas again with coloured tree tights that resemble a box of Quality of Streets 😍

We have them!! My parents had them when I was growing up and since my father died I need them because he loved them. Such happy and fond memories.

I couldn't give a toss what anyone else thinks!

Teenagemaw · 02/12/2018 08:06

Retro is trendy!! Go for it!! (Haven't rtft)

Jaxtellerswife · 02/12/2018 08:59

PortiaCastis · 02/12/2018 09:05

I have them ready to put up today sometime, don't give a damn if they're trendy or not they're going up, refuse to obey the trendiness rules

GallicosCats · 02/12/2018 09:15

Christmas is not the time for tasteful decoration. Forget stylish one colour displays. Ours is all about every colour of the rainbow, garlands, tinsel, holly (real and fake), the lot.

lidoshuffle · 02/12/2018 09:16

Such a lovely thread of shared happy childhood memories!

lightlypoached · 02/12/2018 09:19

my sisters cat used to eat the lametta and her boyfriend once had to do a near-surgical procedure on the cat to cut the lametta out of its bum as it got stuck on the way out Grin . I love cats. and christmas

put the tacky ceiling stuff up I say.

Birdsgottafly · 02/12/2018 09:25

I got mine 3-4-2 in Wilkinsons.

My living is Silver/white themed. My Diningroom red/gold and there will be blue/silver, in my bathroom. I am throwing in some natural decorations as well and Christmas plants.

My house will look like poundland threw up in it and my toddler Grandchildren will love it.

Pinkprincess1978 · 02/12/2018 09:25

I had forgotten about these! Our house was covered in them when I was growing up!

Aaaahfuck · 02/12/2018 09:31

I love them and they are really cheap. We're having our first Christmas in our house after living in flats for years. Think I will buy some as our house has high ceilings. For Christmas decorations I'm very much more is more and anything goes!

UnleashTheBulsara · 02/12/2018 09:43

@ShadowWeaver You could put them around the perimeter of the ceiling, not across to the light fixture?

Ours go round the picture rail in the living room. The ceiling has a panel on it with a cornice-like border and I fix dangly snowflakes, bells, stars, balls etc to the corners and middles of that.

Might be an acceptable compromise to having them going up to the light fixture? If you do really want them up...

RoseMartha maybe our parents hated them too, but they put this stuff up because us kids clamoured for them all round Woolworth's Smile

HerBigChance · 02/12/2018 09:47

I have lovely photos of family Christmases past that features loads of these decorations. The pics include my late father and brother, and the decorations pinpoint particular years/moments in time, with family sitting around the table.

Put them up! It doesn't matter what's trendy.

Mookatron · 02/12/2018 09:50

Christmas is a time for tinsel-vomit and not bothering about "good taste" surely? Otherwise where's the joy???

HaveYouSeentheWritingontheWall · 02/12/2018 10:19

U-NEED-US in Portsmouth have a big selection of foil decorations.

Personally I don't like all the glittery decorations that have been on sale for the last few years (mainly because of the glitter ending up everywhere), I also don't like the minimalistic decorations, they just don't seem very Christmassy.
When I was a kid there were only paper garlands, paper hanging decorations and paper chains (until the foil decorations appeared in the shops) we had glass baubles with beautiful traditional Christmas scenes painted on them, my grandparents had tree lights that had similar scenes painted on the bell shaped glass covers.

Momasita · 02/12/2018 10:26

We always have chains and stuff hanging down, stuff hanging from ceiling was def big part of my Xmas excitement.

We have all that jazz except its white or pearlised. And loads of snowflakes.
Go for it op! You won't get awarded a taste badge for not doing it.

Chouetted · 02/12/2018 10:28

They're positively hazardous to the very tall, but knock yourself out. Just be careful where you put the pointy ones Grin

sakura06 · 02/12/2018 12:59

I used to love these too. Weirdly the smell is very associated with Christmas for me. Put them up!
