To wish Christmas Ceiling Garlands/Chains would become trendy again!?!

We have some unopened shiny ceiling decorations, I won't put them up because I want to fit in with the modern look (don't flame me!) but so wish these were trendy again! That was the magic of Christmas for me, the ceiling all colourful and lower with stars spinning round when you passed under them! I'm 33.

Now they are classed as 'tacky'! It's a shame they won't be a memory for our generation of kids!

Now unicorn, rainbow and oil slick colours are a trend again, can we hope for a beautiful tacky Christmas again with coloured tree tights that resemble a box of Quality of Streets 😍

I bought some of these a few years ago and my DH refused to let me put them up ☹️. My parents still put theirs up every year and I absolutely love them! They just epitomise Christmas as a child for me!

UnleashTheBulsara · 01/12/2018 22:16

@BellsAreRinging1 We have these too and I love them. The more shiny stuff that reminds me of childhood the better

I bought a lot of mine from this site, the huge foil balls and stars are FABULOUS darling! The colours seem to have a modern feel to them, maybe primary colours are bit more 80s/70s/whenever...

categed · 01/12/2018 22:19

Like these? We have them in the living room evwry year and paper chains in the other room. My girls love them 😁

Well put local garden centre has won some award for their display this year (its bloody amazing every year actually) and they have an 80’s room with these for sale again. They’ll be the next trendy retro thing, like the old fashioned glass baubles are now. Put them up if you love them. There’s something very powerful about the nostalgia of Xmas decs. Looking at a chain of those coloured tree lights with the little clear plastic flower surrounds transports me back to my grandparents house and many happy memories.

Tinyteatime · 01/12/2018 22:27

Pickwick fairy lights! That’s what I meant.

ItsClemFandangoCanYouHearMe · 01/12/2018 22:30

I know they're tacky but I love them! Really remind me of being young but everything is so modern now I think it looks out of place which is a shame!

chachaboom · 01/12/2018 22:30

Yes! Glad it's not just me, I've championed these decorations for years, they completely transform a house from general 'cosy winter decor' to 'get me a pint of Baileys and open the second tin of Roses, it's Christmas!'.

To the PP who called it the Working Men's club disco look - that's the exact phrase I use. 🤛

ShadowWeaver · 01/12/2018 22:33

I love them too and had them until a few years ago when we moved to a house where the light fittings are not central. So they just looked weird one stretched thin while the other is dropping. I miss them :(

categed · 01/12/2018 22:35

Hmmm, got the pickwick lights here as well. I love things that remind me of christmas as a child. Makes me feel happy and safe.

I've had them up for a few years now. Not continuously obviously Grin

LadyDeadpool · 01/12/2018 22:38

We've put them up all over the house today the kids love it and it reminds me of being a child. I've never been the sort of person to give a shit about trends though as long as we're happy why should I care if other people think I'm tacky? I've got better things to worry about.

Banana770 · 01/12/2018 22:46

I saw some in a shop this week and nearly bought some thinking my three year old would love them (and I secretly have a soft spot for them). I didn’t because I thought they were a bit tacky but screw it, I’m going back and getting them!!

Jiggy16 · 01/12/2018 22:48

So agree op! 33 aswell and these decorations were all over our house as a child! Love them! But yea nobody else likes them now 😭 my husband despises them, how boring!! Miss all the colourful decorations!

BellsAreRinging1 · 01/12/2018 22:50

I'm so glad we are bringing these back (and glad that for some of you they never went!). I can't wait now, I deffo want some of those 80s lights too. I also live on a well to do private estate and have just spotted coloured fairy lights and colourful projector adorning a house. I think we are onto something!

@UnleashTheBulsara agree the pom poms and stars look lovely, more simple for modern decor

The above and these, if I saw them hanging in a house I'd think they were a trend I wasn't yet aware of

I love them, reminds me so much of my childhood.
I might get some, Thankyou op.
Not sure how to hang them though as I'm also in rented Confused

SD1978 · 01/12/2018 23:04

I find it sad that trees seem to be more about fashion, than what you want now. I've seen multiple Instagtam photos of the same bland style of neutral tree, artfully styled in an equally bland room. Yes, this is what some people like, and not knocking that, but if you like colour and garlands- do it. Who gives a crap if others don't. It's your Christmas. In Australia there has been an obsession over a certain Christmas tree from target. It's all people talk about, and it's not Christmas without getting one. Bollocks to that. Christmas is decorating the tree with family, how we want, and having fun doing it .

Starlight456 · 01/12/2018 23:05

Very much remind me of childhood Christmas ‘s . I would love to visit you with them up

smore · 01/12/2018 23:08

I remember the utter joy at waking up on Xmas day and seeing my 80s house plastered in these by mum. And licking paper chains.

Makes me feel mean given we've got some tasteful Scandinavian white theme this year ... I am now longing for the smell of tinsel!

BellsAreRinging1 · 01/12/2018 23:10

@DragonmotherKhaleesi

General consensus is these Command ones that leave no mess, or sucky hooks!
