To wish Christmas Ceiling Garlands/Chains would become trendy again!?!

We have some unopened shiny ceiling decorations, I won't put them up because I want to fit in with the modern look (don't flame me!) but so wish these were trendy again! That was the magic of Christmas for me, the ceiling all colourful and lower with stars spinning round when you passed under them! I'm 33.

Now they are classed as 'tacky'! It's a shame they won't be a memory for our generation of kids!

Now unicorn, rainbow and oil slick colours are a trend again, can we hope for a beautiful tacky Christmas again with coloured tree tights that resemble a box of Quality of Streets 😍

@MysteryNameChange

I saw a Scottish designer filled a tree with old baubles and tat in the name of style. Maybe if we declare it 'next year's must have we can convince people we are uber trendy and ahead of the times!!

Say you're having a retro Christmas and put them up! Life's too short to miss out on things that make you happy just to be trendy. I loved sitting on my dad's shoulders to pin these to the ceiling when I was younger.

funnylittlefloozie · 01/12/2018 13:20

I dont think i am disciplined enough to forgo what actually makes me happy, just to be stylish. I've got gold and silver garlands and starburst things from Wilkos, and they will be going up in the living room, along with tinsel on the tree and over the pictures, greenery up the banisters, and the rope light tree in the conservatory. If you cant be tacky at Christmas, when can you be?

CurcubitaPepo · 01/12/2018 13:24

Aah I remember these fondly, especially the row my parents always had as my dad was putting them up!

Louiselouie0890 · 01/12/2018 13:31

I put them up for my kids

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 01/12/2018 13:32

I am never so firmly entrenched in my past as at Christmas, and decorations especially have me squealing with delight and nostalgia.
I am buying new Angel Chimes this Christmas!
My tree will be covered in old baubles.
My best memories are my gran pegging up cards with tiny pegs and her Cinderella carriage lights which now go for hundreds on eBay. Just beautiful.
Plain white lights and presents wrapped tastefully in craft paper? No ta. I want coloured lights and gaudy paper.

Jaxtellerswife · 01/12/2018 13:33

We had these, held together with bits of tape year after year. Dad would get the box down, mum would do the repairs and then they would decorate. My brother and I would decorate the tree and by morning it was fully rearranged lol

Fairypiggy · 01/12/2018 13:34

I think I remember seeing on Instagram that Zoella has put the foil garlands in her office. They must be in!

Sparklingbrook · 01/12/2018 13:34

We can't have them because the wafting would set off our burglar alarm.

Remember them fondly from Nan's house though.

HJWT · 01/12/2018 13:36

We never even had these growing up but I remember them at my neighbours house

Samcro · 01/12/2018 13:36

we have the dangly ones and we put tinsel on the three.
dd (adult and sn) loves it. so I don't care if its not "trendy"

BackIntoTheSun · 01/12/2018 13:49

Yes I love these! Bring back 80s Christmas tat!! Nothing says christmas for me like that era of decorations from my childhood. Like those big foil fans you would have hanging on the wall and plastic Santa faces. Might have to argue to DH that we need to go full 80s so DD (14mo) can grow up with it too

Baaaaaaaaaaaa · 01/12/2018 13:50

They were being sold in Asda last year, I bought some silver ones and put them up in my dining room. To me, if the shops have them then it’s trending Grin. I too remember them from my childhood in the 50/60’s

I have fond memories of these from about 30 years ago, when I was in my late teens. My DM was always a 'less is more' type of decorator, but my friend's DM always went to town. You practically had to wade through ceiling garlands to get from one room to another - parting them with your hands in some places! Thought it was wonderful.

NameChangeToAvoidBeingFound · 01/12/2018 14:03

We use them and love them, we also have multi coloured balloons on the ceiling and lights and santas everywhere.

CloserIAm2Fine · 01/12/2018 14:16

Just put them up! It’s your home and it’s christmas, they hurt nobody, just do what makes you happy!

Anybody that was rude enough to criticise my Christmas decorations in my own home wouldn’t be invited back.

TheOxymoron · 01/12/2018 14:19

I remember when they were all paper and not foil.

Do what makes you happy OP. Never mind what others think. Smile

Thesearmsofmine · 01/12/2018 14:23

We got some last year to put up and while they look tacky as anything it was worth it to see how much the children loved them! They remind me of childhood!

Dragonglass · 01/12/2018 17:27

dragonglass use the small removable stick on hooks. They are fantastic for all decorations, but even more so when in a rented place. Made by 3m

Good idea. I have used these for lights on the window before. Don't know why I didn't think of using them for ceiling decs. Thanks

GrumpyOldMare · 01/12/2018 17:34

We had those back in the 70's.I don't now though. The only decorations I have now is a tree.

Fullofthought · 01/12/2018 17:35

My 6 year old saw them in the shop and asked for them. So we have them. :)

tshirtsuntan · 01/12/2018 17:39

I really want the big card father Christmas and reindeer joined with cords that used to run up our stairs in the 80's but I can't find it Sad

Didsomeonesaybunny · 01/12/2018 17:42

Ahhh OP this reminds me of my childhood, such happy memories putting these up with my mum.

If you love them go for it.

ChasedByBees · 01/12/2018 17:47

Surely Christmas is when you real out all the garish unfashionable shiny stuff? Put them up.
